He had just saved her from a fire in her house, rescuing her by carrying her out of the house into her front yard, while he continued to fight the fire.

She is pregnant.

When he finally got done putting the fire out, he sat down to catch his breath and rest.

A photographer from the Charlotte, North Carolina newspaper, "The Observer," noticed her in the distance looking at the fireman.

He saw her walking straight toward the fireman and wondered what she was going to do.

As he raised his camera, she came up to the tired man who had saved her life and the lives of her babies, and kissed him, just as the photographer snapped this photograph.

"It was at this point in the conversation that I burst out laughing," says Barsoum. If the pyramids were indeed cast, he says, someone should have proven it beyond a doubt by now, in this day and age, with just a few hours of electron microscopy.

It turned out that nobody had completely proven the theory...yet.

"What started as a two-hour project turned into a five-year odyssey that I undertook with one of my graduate students, Adrish Ganguly, and a colleague in France, Gilles Hug," Barsoum says.

In 1801, he was in a particular town (I forget the name) for a concert. Walking down the streets on a full moon night, a day before the scheduled concert, Beethoven heard someone playing the piano?- the person was playing one of Beethoven's compositions... and murdering it!

Unable to stand the massacre of his beloved piece, Beethoven rang the doorbell, introduced himself and offered to teach the pianist (a young girl in this case) how to play the song properly. The girl was naturally thrilled out of her senses.

After teaching her the piece, Beethoven sat for a while at the piano in a thoughtful mood, playing around with the keys. The light of moon coming through the windows and falling on the keys of the piano created a breathtaking effect. Inspired by the sheer beauty of this imagery, Beethoven began composing a piano solo.

Here's a fact: Everyone sings to themselves -- in the car, in the shower, walking down the street, in the privacy of our own homes -- when we think no one else is looking. So the little boy in the video below is no different than the rest of us ... except that when his mom stumbles in on his little 'Hit Me Baby One More Time' routine, he immediately faints in surprise. Poor kid. We wonder if he was embarrassed about being caught singing or being caught listening to Britney Spears. There's no shame in either!

Chinese plan to control rain for Olympics

Chinese meteorologists said Wednesday they are drawing up plans to force rain ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics so that showers could not mar the Games.

Wang Yubin, an engineer with the Beijing Meteorological Bureau, told a press conference that historical data from the past 30 years indicate there is a 50 percent chance of rain for the opening ceremony on August 8, 2008 and the closing ceremony a little more than two weeks later.

"We are now drafting the implementation plan for the artificial rain mitigation for the opening and closing ceremonies," said Wang Yubin, an engineer with the Beijing Meteorological Bureau. "We will take necessary measures for the possible rain mitigation."

Technicians with the Beijing Weather Modification Office said last May they had fired seven rocket shells containing 163 cigarette-size sticks of silver iodide over the city's skies, which they claimed forced four-tenths of an inch (one centimeter) of rain.

Researchers have uncovered a 300-million-year–old-fossilised rainforest, buried deep below ground in a coal mine in Illinois, US. It is by far the largest such forest ever found and provides an unprecedented look at the ecology of one of the world's earliest tropical forests.

The study offers a valuable insight into ancient forest communities, including where the plants lived in relation to one another and how forest composition changed as their distance from the coast increased.

On April 19, researchers from Cardiff University in the UK published a study about Earth's earliest known forest trees. These fossilised trees, found in upstate New York, are 85 million years older than the ones found in Illinois.

Dry skin conditions, including eczema and even psoriasis, benefit from this added moisturisation too, but also from the fact that a Vaseline barrier reduces the penetration of irritants. "Eczema is probably caused by allergy-causing molecules getting into the skin," says Prof Hawk. "Any occlusive moisturiser would help to prevent this, but Vaseline is more bland than most, there are no perfumes or colourants, so it is less likely to cause irritation."

A cure for all your ills?

Last month, a reader wrote to our GP columnist Dr James Le Fanu to report the "miraculous" healing properties of Vaseline.

She had repeatedly applied a coat of the bathroom cabinet staple to two troublesome scars on her leg, which quickly disappeared, and then to a mole on her face that subsequently "dropped off".

A week after her letter was published, The Daily Telegraph mail bag was bulging with letters singing the praises of petroleum jelly for the treatment of everything from nappy rash and chapped lips to psoriasis and piles. One reader says it is the best face cream she has ever used

But what is it that makes this pot of grease so great?

"Vaseline is an occlusive moisturiser, which means that it creates a barrier on the surface of the skin. This is beneficial because it helps the skin to retain moisture, which is crucial to the healing process, and also because it keeps wounds sterile by preventing harmful bacteria from getting in."
