Formation of 'Earth-like' proto-planet detected

CHICAGO: Snuggled into a huge belt of warm dust, an Earth-like planet may be forming some 424 light years away.

The massive dust ring surrounding one of the system's two binary stars is smack in the middle of the system's 'habitable zone' where liquid water could one day exist on a rocky planet.

Huge star partners huge black hole

SYDNEY: In a galaxy not so far away, astronomers have located the biggest stellar black hole yet measured, and it is locked in a tight orbit with an even bigger star.

The size of the black hole, which tips the scales at 16 times the mass of our Sun, and its close proximity to an even bigger companion star may force a rethink about how the universe's biggest stars live and die. The research appears today in the British journal Nature.

A DNA analysis shows Neanderthals share with humans two key changes in the FOXP2 gene known to be involved in speech, raising the possibility the species possessed some prerequisites for language, the researchers said.

But many as yet unknown genes may also underlie the capacity for language, the researchers added.

Wherever possible there must be independent confirmation of the facts.

Encourage substantive debate on the evidence by knowledgeable proponents of all points of view.

Arguments from authority carry little weight (in science there are no "authorities").

Spin more than one hypothesis - don't simply run with the first idea that caught your fancy.

Try not to get overly attached to a hypothesis just because it's yours.

Quantify, wherever possible.

If there is a chain of argument every link in the chain must work.

Occam's razor - if there are two hypotheses that explain the data equally well choose the simpler.

Ask whether the hypothesis can, at least in principle, be falsified (shown to be false by some unambiguous test). In other words, it is testable? Can others duplicate the experiment and get the same result?

Conduct control experiments - especially "double blind" experiments where the person taking measurements is not aware of the test and control subjects.

PluggedIn: Hackers control PCs while users unaware

BOSTON (Reuters) - A few weeks ago Candace Locklear's office computer quietly started sending out dozens of instant messages with photos attached that were infected with malicious software.

She was sitting at her desk, with no sign that the messaging software was active. By the time she figured out what was going on, several friends and colleagues had opened the attachments and infected their computers.

It took eight hours for a technician to clean up her computer. But because the malicious software worked so secretly, she's still not convinced that all's clear.

Computer security experts estimate that tens of millions of personal computers are infected with malicious software like the one that attacked Locklear's machine. Such programs, generally classified as malware, attack companies along with consumers.

clipper's remarks: Scientist estimate that if a person follows this restricted calorie regiment all their life, they could increase their lifespan to around 150 years. The regiment calls for a diet that is very high in nutrients but very low in calories. Scientist have proven this works with several animals and insects. Every animal or insect they have tried this with has shown the same relative increase in life span. It seems that it is a universal phenomenon. Scientist see no reason for this not to work with humans. This news article tells that scientist are figuring out the mechanism that brings about the increased lifespan. It is very possible that they will figure out a way to increase the life span without the need to restrict calories. My question is, what kind of condition would we be in if we lived to 150. If I could not do much, I do not see the point of living that long. I might feel different though as I get older.

New study reveals why restricting calories may lead to longevity

Scientists have known for more than 70 years that the one surefire way to extend the lives of animals was to cut calories by an average of 30 to 40 percent. The question was: Why?

Researchers report in the journal Cell that the phenom is likely linked to two enzymes—SIRT3 and SIRT4—in mitochondria (the cell's powerhouse that, among other tasks, converts nutrients to energy). They found that a cascade of reactions triggered by lower caloric intake raises the levels of these enzymes, leading to an increase in the strength and efficiency of the cellular batteries. By invigorating the mitochondria, SIRT3 and SIRT4 extend the life of cells, by preventing flagging mitochondria from developing tiny holes (or pores) in their membranes that allow proteins that trigger apoptosis, or cell death, to seep out into the rest of the cell.
