Google.org will invest "hundreds of millions'' in companies specializing in renewable energy, Page said. The philanthropic arm, which sits under the umbrella of the Google Foundation, will draw upon its holdings of nearly $2 billion (euro1.34 billion) worth Google's stock, which gained $7.57 Tuesday to close at $673.57.

Google.org already is working with two outside companies: Pasadena-based eSolar Inc., which specializes in solar thermal power and Alameda-based Makani Power Inc., which specializes in wind power

BEIRUT, Lebanon: A Muslim woman is allowed to fight back in self-defense if hit by her husband, Lebanon's top Shiite cleric declared Tuesday in a ruling rare for the male-dominated Islamic society.

Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah issued the fatwa, or religious edict, on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

A statement by his office said Fadlallah stressed that although Islam gives men supremacy over women in running household affairs, it "does not approve of a man using any sort of violence against a woman, even in the form of insults and harsh words."

Chocolate Sauce Blocks Autobahn

Thirteen tons of chocolate melted and flowed across the German Autobahn on Thursday night after the truck carrying it caught fire.

Willy Wonka would have approved. In "Charlie and the Choclate Factory," gluttonous German Augustus Gloop gets sucked into a river of choclate. Luckily no one met that sticky fate on Thursday evening when a semi-truck loaded with 13 tons of chocolate bars had a small accident on the German Autobahn.

the truck suddenly caught on fire as it was cruising through the night near Ludwigsfelde just south of Berlin.

The heat from the fire made quick work of the sweet cargo and before long, a mini chocolate river was flowing across the highway. It took most of the night to put out the fire and get the dessert cleaned up.

Damage is estimated at €100,000 -- not counting the psychological harm caused by the impending chocolate shortage in the German capital.

All over Africa, there is a significant realization that tech is the wave of the future. African government ministers are traveling around the world – from San Francisco to the UAE to Bangladesh – pitching opportunities for new investors and building deals. Technology has also quickly become a major item on the development agenda, thanks in large part to Africa's new tech champions and a blooming tech sector.

This, of course, is not completely new news.

However, in today’s emerging markets ICT world, especially in Africa, two things are different:

The second difference is the increasingly active private sector, and its willingness to work with Government and civil society on all manner of partnerships.

The first difference is leadership. African leaders, including presidents like Kagame, Kufuor and Johnson-Sirleaf, are more ICT-focused than their predecessors, offering high-level support to projects and policies that will really (not just rhetorically) help the spread of ICT.

About three weeks ago, I sat in a conference hall in San Francisco and listened as President Paul Kagame of Rwanda addressed a group of African and US Government officials. Nothing particularly remarkable in that. Its part of the role of head of state, after all.

However, the location was more than symbolic. The event was at the Hilton, in the Financial District, in tech-rich northern California. And the audience was chock full of luminaries of the IT world, from Cisco, Oracle, Motorola, Microsoft and others. What is even more remarkable is that nearly everyone in the audience agreed.

They agreed on the power of IT to transform the continent, and on its ability to help countries “skip steps in development” by adding more dynamism to local business. Kagame himself referred cell phones as the “lifeline of microentrepreneurs”.

Army ants form living pothole plugs to speed up delivery
Certain army ants in the rainforests of Central and South America conduct spectacular predatory raids containing up to 200,000 foraging ants. Remarkably, some ants use their bodies to plug potholes in the trail leading back to the nest, making a flatter surface so that prey can be delivered to the developing young at maximum speed.

The raid always remains connected to the nest by a trail of forager traffic, along which prey-laden foragers run back to run back to the nest. This trail can be extremely uneven and full of ‘pot holes’ as it passes over leaves and branches on the forest floor.

Their experiments showed that individuals size-match to the hole they plug and cooperate to plug larger holes. "We did this by getting the ants to literally ‘walk the plank’,

IPCC Climate Report Scientifically Erroneous

Climate Science has selected two errors in Chapter 1 of the 2007 WG1 IPCC Report to highlight

The second error (and it is a big one) is their unsubstantiated claim that

“Projecting changes in climate due to changes in greenhouse gases 50 years from now is a very different and much more easily solved problem than forecasting weather patterns just weeks from now. To put it another way, long-term variations brought about by changes in the composition of the atmosphere are much more predictable than individual weather events.” [from page 105]

This is a remarkable claim, and forms the basis of the entire IPCC concept

Their claim

is such an absurd, scientifically unsupported claim, that the media and any scientists who swallow this conclusion are either blind to the scientific understanding of the climate system, or have other motives to promote the IPCC viewpoint. The absurdity of the IPCC claim should be obvious to anyone with common sense.
