Many of the fires have been blamed on lightning strikes in tinder-dry forest areas, after a mild winter which saw lower-than-average rainfalls.

In Nevada, some 1,500 evacuees were allowed home after a fire at an electrical substation shut down the inter-state highway and caused major disruptions to train services.

Residents were evacuated from nearly 300 properties over the weekend near Wenatchee, Washington, where high winds have fanned fires.

In Utah, the largest wildfire in state history has destroyed almost 300,000 acres (120,000 hectares).

Several road accidents have occurred on a stretch of highway near Richfield, Utah, including one in which two people were killed. Highway patrols blamed poor visibility from smoke.

Last week, another wildfire still active in the state killed three people.

More than 34,000 acres (13,800 hectares) have been scorched in California's Inyo National Forest and campgrounds had to be evacuated.

The wildfire in South Dakota's Black Hills has burned some 28 sq km (11 sq miles) and killed one person trying to retrieve possessions from a home.

Wildfires have also damaged California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Washington, New Mexico, Oregon, Idaho and Montana.

“Today we’re actually adding fire in front of the main fire to take fuel away in anticipation of the winds tomorrow,” said Tom Efrid, a fire information officer with the U.S. Forest Service. “With those winds we’re going to be challenged. When the wind blows, it won’t have anything to burn.”

Fire crews are using fire to fight the Angora Fire on Tuesday near South Lake Tahoe as they try to get as much done today in advance of Wednesday’s expected stronger winds.

Mont. road reopened near wildfire

HELENA, Mont. - A highway near Glacier National Park was reopened Sunday, just a half-mile from a wind-whipped wildfire, but a nearby lodge threatened by the flames remained evacuated.

Authorities escorted traffic on U.S. 2 through the area along the southern edge of the park in northwest Montana. Fire managers warned that it could be closed again if the blaze flared up like it did Saturday, when wind kicked it across control lines. A 24-mile stretch of the highway was closed Saturday.

SOFIA (AFP) - An extreme heatwave that has roasted southern Europe for a week eased Saturday, but a raft of wildfires that followed in its wake continued to rage and some countries began rounding up suspected arsonists.

In Bulgaria, where 23,000 hectares (57,000 acres) of forest and farmland have burned over the past week as the country experienced its hottest temperatures since records began -- reaching above 45 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) -- some 7,000 firefighters and 2,500 army troops battled the blazes.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush declared disaster areas in Oklahoma on Sunday, making federal aid available to people and businesses hurt by weeks of severe storms, flooding and tornadoes.

Oklahoma, Texas and other nearby states have been hammered by unusually heavy rainfall and severe storms. Last week, an oil spill contaminated floodwaters in the town of Coffeyville, Kansas, where many residents had been evacuated.

WASHINGTON - Pushing back against the Democratic-led Congress, President Bush intends to veto a bill Wednesday that would have eased restraints on federally funded embryonic stem cell research — work that supporters say holds promise for fighting disease.

White House spokesman Tony Fratto said Tuesday that Bush would outline an initiative that could make federal funding available for research on additional "pluripotent" stem cells — ones that can give rise to any kind of cell in the body except those required to develop a fetus.

LESLIE, Mich. - A man widely believed to be the model for the smiling chef on Cream of Wheat boxes finally has a grave marker bearing his name.

Frank L. White died in 1938, and until this week, his grave in Woodlawn Cemetery bore only a tiny concrete marker with no name.

MONTREAT, N.C. - Ruth Graham, who surrendered dreams of missionary work in Tibet to marry a suitor who became the world's most renowned evangelist, died Thursday. She was 87. Graham died at 5:05 p.m. at her home at Little Piney Cove, surrounded by her husband and all five of their children, said a statement released by Larry Ross, Billy Graham's spokesman.
