A law enforcement official has told The Associated Press that a member of the New York Yankees organization was aboard the plane. Federal Aviation Administration records show the plane was registered to pitcher Cory Lidle.

New York City Parks to get free WIFI in July

NEW YORK (AFP) - New York's Central Park and a number of other public spaces will become public Internet hubs starting this summer when the city's parks begin offering free wireless net access, the city government said.

"We expect Central Park to be launched in July, and the rest of the parks in the late summer," the Department of Parks and Recreation said. Among those green spaces going on-line for public Wi-Fi access will be Washington Square, Union Square, Brooklyn's Prospect Park and Flushing Meadows.

Beginning in 2003 the city sought service providers to furnish Wi-Fi service for the parks, but delays set in and only one park -- Battery Park at Manhattan's tip facing the Statue of Liberty -- finally got the service.

Along a gritty stretch of street in Brooklyn, police this month quietly launched an ambitious plan to combat street crime and terrorism. But instead of cops on the beat, wireless video cameras peer down from lamp posts about 30 feet above the sidewalk.

They were the first installment of a program to place 500 cameras throughout the city at a cost of $9 million. Hundreds of additional cameras could follow if the city receives $81.5 million in federal grants it has requested to safeguard Lower Manhattan and parts of midtown with a surveillance "ring of steel" modeled after security measures in London's financial district.

The fears of countless commuters have been realized this morning, as the Transport Workers Union announced a system-wide public transit strike to begin immediately.

The announcement, made at 3 p.m., means that the union's 34,000 MTA employees will leave their posts at the end of their shifts, shutting down the city's subway and bus system and thwarting millions of commuters and countless tourists on the cusp of the holiday season.

"Our contract expired on Thursday at midnight, but we postponed a stike in deference to our riders," said TWU Local 100 President Roger Toussaint during the early-morning announcement. "All local TWU members are directed to report to the picket lines."
