New in JavaScript 1.7

JavaScript 1.7 is a language update introducing several new features, in particular generators, iterators, array comprehensions, let expressions, and destructuring assignment. It also includes all the features of JavaScript 1.6.

JavaScript 1.7 support is available starting in Firefox 2 Beta 1, as well as in current Minefield (trunk) builds.

The code samples included in this article can be experimented with in the JavaScript shell. Read Introduction to the JavaScript shell to learn how to build and use the shell.

Users of the popular MySpace website have been warned by computer experts that viruses linked to the interactive site, which boasts more than one million regular users, are in circulation.

Experts believe that hackers have hit the hugely popular site and say the viruses in circulation can change settings, delete files, secretly track users' movements online and even damage computers.

They believe that the hackers have hidden dangerous software on the site which means that computers can be attacked unaware to users while they are just viewing pages.

The final chosen design was a concept from Daniel Burka and sketched by Stephen Desroches, which I then rendered using Fireworks MX. I’ve been using Fireworks over Illustrator or Photoshop for icon design as I love the way I can work in vectors and see the result in pixels, rather than smooth vectors. The updated gradient tools in MX make this possible too.

High on ideas but low on power?

Firefox is "just a browser", but it has an evolving role to play in this world. The browser is a platform, as threatened in 1995 and dismissed with the death of Netscape. Yet every web app is hobbled by stagnant content standards from five or ten years ago. There is no good reason for this.

There is no reason why browsers should not innovate, along with plugins, applications, and operating systems, to support modern hardware-assisted graphics, dynamic programming languages, and richer content types. The reach of the web still favors the browser over any particular OS or non-Web platform.

Therefore in order to innovate nearer to "Web time" on the Firefox user interface and extension fronts, we propose to develop the front end of Firefox 2 and the platform for Firefox 3 concurrently, with Firefox 2 releasing in less than a year. The details have been drafted in a product roadmap that Chris Beard has written. (Many of you know Chris as an active driver and product manager in the project since Firefox 1.0 launched. He's been a huge help, and I'm very grateful for his contribution here.)

The back end code, Gecko and other modules such as the JavaScript engine, will occupy the Mozilla source tree "trunk" development during the Gecko 1.9 milestone, which is already under way. The major efforts are to:

rearchitect our rendering layer to support hardware-accelerated graphics;
selectively improve architecture in the layout engine, to fix longstanding bugs;
improve web author productivity with better content languages and debugability;
move XUL to the next level in concert with the rendering and programming improvements;
make XULRunner the embedding vehicle for Firefox and all modern XUL applications.

Firefox 1.5 Release Candidate Held For Last-Minute Bug Hunt

The delay, though likely to be brief, could knock RC1 off a planned Oct. 28 release.

Mozilla Corp. has had to delay the first release candidate of Firefox 1.5 by a few days to smash some late-appearing bugs, a company employee announced late Monday.

Firefox 1.5, which is currently in its second beta version, was going to move on to the next step, Release Candidate 1, on Friday, Oct. 28. A code lockdown -- which meant that no new changes for RC1 would be accepted -- was scheduled for midnight Sunday, Oct. 23.

"We didn't quite make it and this morning there were a couple of regressions, a couple of newly discovered security issues, and a couple of unfixed Update bugs," blogged Asa Dotzler, the coordinator of Mozilla’s QA program, on Monday.

By Monday night, only one or two security flaws needed attention, Dotzler said, but the delay meant that RC1 probably won't be ready by Friday.

Firefox 1.5, the first major upgrade since the open-source browser debuts in November 2004, will feature an auto updating mechanism, faster browsing, and new privacy controls.

100 million downloads for Firefox

Just shy of Firefox's first birthday party, the Mozilla Foundation celebrated the 100 millionth download of its Web browser Wednesday.

Mozilla has seen steady adoption of its browser since its release last November. After a somewhat higher download rate immediately following its release, the browser has settled into between 200,000 and 300,000 downloads a day, said Asa Dotzler, the Mozilla liaison to the SpreadFirefox community.
