The tech industry -- makers of hardware, software and every ware in between -- prides itself on innovation. If George Bush is the decider, then Steve Jobs and his pals, er, rivals at Dell and IBM are the innovators, the geniuses, the gurus.

We’ve elevated these guys to rock-star status, which I suppose makes sense, because they provide the tools that allow a self-involved culture to wallow in its narcissism. They keep us kitted out with must-have laptops and iPods and Blackberries, thereby giving us texting and virtual worlds and, hoo-wahhh, our own personal music.

Unfortunately, all these way-cool necessaries wear out or become obsolete (and way too soon -- more on that in a bit). Now, Johnny I’m-Way-Deep-Into-Myself can’t afford to fall behind on the gadget front, so he’s going to ditch the stuff he’s got to get the newest stuff, the best stuff.

According to the Associated Press, upwards of 500 million tons of electronic trash is generated worldwide every year

International terrorism and the threat to Britain from Al-Qaeda would probably be deemed by most as unlikely subject matter for a musical.

The controversial satire about Islamic terrorism includes such classic tunes as "Building a bomb today, what does the manual say" and "I wanna be like Osama".

Perhaps its creators were inspired by the success of The Producers - a runaway broadway hit which attracted criticism for its camp rendition of Nazi Germany.

Like that production, the terrorism musical - billed as a "madcap gallop through the wacky world of international terrorism" - has already sparked protests.

Remains of Taningia danae often show up in the stomachs of sperm whales. The squid's flabby flesh led experts to think that it floats in the water column like a neutrally buoyant scuba diver. But the new footage shows it can reach speeds of up to 9 kilometres per hour.

When presented with bait, the squid attacked, flashing its luminescent spots, or 'photophores', which contain glowing bacteria. It produced longer glows when faced with the bait rig's lights, suggesting that it was performing some sort of mating dance.

Japanese researchers have gained an insight into the behaviour of the elusive Taningia danae, one of the world's largest squid species, thanks to the first footage of the deep-sea creature. The video reveals that the animal is a speedy swimmer — not, as was thought, a lazy drifter.

The footage also shows that the squid, which can grow to 2.3 metres long, apparently uses luminescent spots on its arms to confuse prey, and may also use the glowing dots in courtship.

The video was made off Japan's Ogasawara Islands, using an underwater high-definition camera, by Tsunemi Kubodera of the National Science Museum in Tokyo, together with colleagues from the Japan Broadcasting Corporation and the Ogasawara Whale Watching Association. They describe their observations in Proceedings of the Royal Society B¹.
