Blu-ray gets edge over HD DVD

Nothing has been announced, but Variety is reporting that the last two major studios backing HD DVD — NBC Universal and Paramount — are opening the door for a switch to Blu-ray. These studios have commitments to release some discs this year in HD DVD, but both have ended their exclusive commitment to that format, which is backed by a group led by Toshiba.

" -- - In Washington a remarkable and ominous campaign is under way to "contain Iran," which turns out to mean "containing Iranian influence," in a confrontation that Washington Post correspondent Robin Wright calls "Cold War II."

The sabre-rattling rhetoric about "containing Iran" has escalated to the point where both political parties and practically the whole US Press corps accept it as legitimate and, in fact, honourable, that "all options are on the table," to quote the leading presidential candidates — possibly even nuclear weapons. "All options on the table" means that Washington is threatening war. The UN Charter outlaws "the threat or use of force." The United States, which has chosen to become an outlaw state, disregards international laws and norms. We're allowed to threaten anybody we want — and to attack anybody we want.

Iran resists US or Israeli domination of the Middle East but scarcely poses a military threat.

Sure, the male brains being studied belonged to marmosets, but the message is clear: When a dude becomes a daddy, his head changes.

It took a moment for the implications to sink in. When your noggin is full of child-care tidbits like "When she rubs her eyes, it's nap time" and "A rectal thermometer is NOT a pacifier," there's little room for any information that doesn't directly concern a toddler's needs. For example, I now know all the words and gestures for "Itsy-Bitsy Spider," but I can't name the Mets' pitching rotation.

Basically, when compared with offspring-less counterparts, paternal marmosets had a more developed prefrontal cortex - a part of the brain associated with higher thinking and emotion - as well as more receptors for vasopressin, a hormone linked to learning and social bonding.

As for this father, I eagerly await a follow-up study. I just hope it's published in the form of a bedtime story, so I'll have a chance to read it.
