Battlefield robot cars of the future face off in California

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Prototype robot cars of the future face off in California on Saturday under the gaze of Pentagon officials keen to see if machines rather than troops might one day be able to drive in urban war zones.

This weekend's competition organised by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Pentagon's research arm, will see 11 teams descend on a former US Air Force base in Victorville, situated in the desert northeast of Los Angeles.

The winning team will snare a cool two million dollars, the runner-up one million and the third place team 500,000.

Thrun said he believed robot-driven vehicles would be deployed in war zones before they are seen in everyday civilian environments.

UN backs new Darfur peace force

African Union soldiers will be part of the UN force in Darfur

The United Nations Security Council has voted in favour of sending peacekeepers to Sudan's troubled Darfur region.

Up to 26,000 troops and police will make up the world's largest peacekeeping force, under a joint UN and African Union mandate.

The resolution will allow peacekeepers to use force to defend civilians and aid workers in Darfur from any attack.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon described the mission as "historic and unprecedented".

The resolution was co-sponsored by the UK and France, among others, although its language was toned down after Sudan's UN ambassador described an early draft as "ugly" and "awful".

Emyr Jones Parry, the British ambassador to the UN, warned that the mere act of voting in favour of a peacekeeping force would not save lives in Darfur.

Russia Suspends Arms Treaty With NATO, Cites Security (Update1)

July 14 (Bloomberg) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin suspended an arms treaty with NATO that limits the deployment of conventional forces across Europe, citing concerns that the agreement undermines Russia's security.

The 1990 accord was suspended ``due to exceptional circumstances, in relation to the treaty's content, that affect the security of the Russian Federation and require immediate measures,'' Putin said in the statement.

Putin has also denounced U.S. plans to put a radar station and 10 interceptor missiles in former Soviet satellite states.

Putin's decree will become active 150 days after other participants in the accord are formally notified, according to today's statement.

The suspension may also mean an arms build-up in the European part of Russia, Anatoly Antonov, disarmament chief in Russia's Foreign Ministry, said last month.

This Cassini image is a color map of the composition of a portion of Saturn's moon Hyperion.

In this map, blue shows the maximum exposure of frozen water, red denotes carbon dioxide ice ("dry ice"), magenta indicates regions of water plus carbon dioxide, yellow is a mix of carbon dioxide and an unidentified material. The map was made with data from the Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer aboard the Cassini spacecraft during its flyby of Hyperion in September 2005.

House votes to ban aid to Saudi Arabia

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives voted on Friday to prohibit any aid to Saudi Arabia as lawmakers accused the close ally of religious intolerance and bankrolling terrorist organizations.

In the past three years, Congress has passed bills to stop the relatively small amount of U.S. aid to Saudi Arabia, only to see the Bush administration circumvent the prohibitions.

"By cutting off aid and closing the loophole we send a clear message to the Saudi Arabian government that they must be a true ally in advancing peace in the Middle East," said Rep. Anthony Weiner, a New York Democrat.

The money has been used to train Saudis in counter-terrorism and border security and to pay for Saudi military officers to attend U.S. military school.

"With poor countries all over the globe begging us for help, why are we giving money to this oil-rich nation?" Berkley said.

The question becomes - how do people retrain themselves to think in healthier ways that will allow them to create a better existence for themselves? If our beliefs are interfering with our ability to assimilate the information quantum physics represents - how will we assist each other in accepting that our assumptions about life were incorrect, that life isn't "meant to be hard" or any other hidden and limiting belief?
Human kind is, I believe, on the verge of learning something amazing about life itself and it may take generations before it trickles down to the average population. A sad testament when you consider that much of the suffering in our world needn't occur at all!
I manifest, through my imagination and heartfelt desire, the image of a world where people no longer suffer needlessly!

One of the hazards of spending a lot of time surfing the Web is that you inevitably find dozens of interesting websites, articles or services that you want to remember, pass on to someone else, or go back and look at later in more detail. But what's the best way to do that?

A similar service that has been around since before Google Notebook, and recently added new features, is called Clipmarks.

Unlike Google Notebook, you can clip and save video content as well as text and photos.

If you post it to a blog (Clipmarks supports Wordpress, Blogger, Typepad and most of the other major blogging platforms), you can format the item in a popup window and then publish it to your blog.
