Grunge Style In Modern Web Design

As Web 2.0 style passes way, it’s time for something new. Few weeks ago we’ve written about the hand-drawing style in modern web-design. And as Web 2.0 style is all about glossy and shiny look, another option would be something rather crude, radical and provoking. Such as the grunge style — dirty look with irregular, nasty, sometimes even ugly and crooked visual elements. Will it establish itself as a trend? Probably not. However, it may be used once some creative and unconventional design approach is needed.

Create interactive data-rich web pages like these ones below without ever touching a database or a web server, or doing any programming:

Exhibit is a three-tier web application framework written in Javascript, which you can include like you would include Google Maps.

If you just want to show a few hundred records of data on maps, timelines, scatter plots, interactive tables, etc., why bother learning SQL, ASP, PHP, CGI, or whatever when you can just use Exhibit?

To use Exhibit, you write: a simple data file, and an HTML file in which you specify how the data should be shown. Data + Presentation. That's all there is to publishing, as it should be.

Thinking about Lessing, Art, the Web, etc.

Doris Lessing’s Nobel Prize acceptance speech has predictably ruffled some bloggers’ feathers.

In fact, I’m not even sure she’s wrong when talking about the Internet and Television.

Is Lessing actually wrong in observing that television and the Internet can have pernicious effects? I despise television. I know there are some quality programs to be found there, but the medium itself– the way it rewards shallow, short attention, the aesthetic assault of the advertising, the crassly manipulative corrupt media that plays out there– carries too high of a cognitive price. The web’s participatory aspect has the capability of redeeming what could otherwise be a similarly passive experience… but that doesn’t mean it always does. For many the web is a distraction that is at best replacing other diversions and at worst– like those diversions it replaces– a medium which actively dilutes and detracts from their intellectual lives.

Web Mashups Turn Citizens Into Washington's Newest Watchdogs

Tread carefully, politicians -- concerned citizens are watching your every move on the web. Their tools? Custom data mashups that use public databases to draw correlations between every vote cast and every dollar spent in Washington.

Take this report about the widely debated and bitterly fought California SB217, which would have banned clear-cutting in ancient forests.

Generated by the nonpartisan MapLight.org website, the report clearly shows that the logging industry, which opposed the bill, gave nearly twice as much money to politicians as environmental groups did. The bill was defeated.

These new tools are providing an unprecedented level of transparency, exposing patterns of influence that otherwise would have remained invisible to ordinary citizens.

Wikiality in My Classroom

A few clicks on the computer and today's students find data that might have taken my 1980s college generation days or weeks to track down in a library. That may not necessarily be a good thing, because we may be developing the same kind of dependence that leads some to blame calculators for declining math skills.

Are we creating a generation of kids who can neither formulate a research plan nor analyze their findings? Jumping from page to page and source to source for quick "fact bites" on the Internet may weaken a student's ability to complete in-depth reading and carefully assess data, so important for critical thinking. As one student put it to me, "It's very hard for me to read a book or a long news article."
