Grunge Style In Modern Web Design

As Web 2.0 style passes way, it’s time for something new. Few weeks ago we’ve written about the hand-drawing style in modern web-design. And as Web 2.0 style is all about glossy and shiny look, another option would be something rather crude, radical and provoking. Such as the grunge style — dirty look with irregular, nasty, sometimes even ugly and crooked visual elements. Will it establish itself as a trend? Probably not. However, it may be used once some creative and unconventional design approach is needed.

Faculty Success Story: Christopher Long

Christopher Long in the College of the Liberal Arts teaches “Tragedy, Comedy, Politics” and “20th Century Philosophy” courses. To help students develop their critical thinking and writing skills, he asks each student to create a blog on which they post assignments. The blogs allow students to write for a broader audience than their instructor alone and encourage them to develop a unique voice. Long’s ability to provide regular, dynamic feedback helps students grow as writers and thinkers.

Long said, “I intentionally chose a decentralized model, where each student would have his or her own blog, because I wanted them to have a sense of owning their work. My main goal for using blogs is to get students actively involved in their own education.” The student blogs, as well as blogs Long set up for each course, were created using the Blogs at Penn State.

Students are often asked to relate current events to course readings.

Create interactive data-rich web pages like these ones below without ever touching a database or a web server, or doing any programming:

Exhibit is a three-tier web application framework written in Javascript, which you can include like you would include Google Maps.

If you just want to show a few hundred records of data on maps, timelines, scatter plots, interactive tables, etc., why bother learning SQL, ASP, PHP, CGI, or whatever when you can just use Exhibit?

To use Exhibit, you write: a simple data file, and an HTML file in which you specify how the data should be shown. Data + Presentation. That's all there is to publishing, as it should be.

clipper's remarks: I use Facebook every day now. I'm pretty well hooked. But this article, which talks about the intellectual pedigree (Girard), political sympathies ("Thatcherite") and financial connections (the CIA) of its board, gives me the creeps in a big way.

With friends like these ...

I despise Facebook. This enormously successful American business describes itself as "a social utility that connects you with the people around you". But hang on. Why on God's earth would I need a computer to connect with the people around me? Why should my relationships be mediated through the imagination of a bunch of supergeeks in California? What was wrong with the pub?

In the main, they simply sit back and watch as millions of Facebook addicts voluntarily upload their ID details, photographs and lists of their favourite consumer objects. Once in receipt of this vast database of human beings, Facebook then simply has to sell the information back to advertisers, or, as Zuckerberg puts it in a recent blog post, "to try to help people share information with their friends about things they do on the web". And indeed, this is precisely what's happening. On November 6 last year, Facebook announced that 12 global brands had climbed on board.

If you've ever wanted to make edits to all your bookmarks in one hit ("batch mode"), then this is for you. My overall impression of Zoho is that they have a great, feature-rich, well thought out system, but that there are an awful lot of annoying bugs lurking just out of sight that make me reluctant to depend on them. Like their plug-in for MS Office -- it seemed to work fine, but then I discovered that it would mess up the formatting on some of my documents, and then one day it just quit working, and that's apparently the end of the story.
