Every generation has its own artistic and emotional voice. Edward Weston and his colleagues broke away from the pictorialism that came before them and redefined photography as an art in its own right, celebrating it for its own qualities; sharp focus, depth of field, etc.

We must find fresh ways of seeing because to re-create what has already been done lacks the emotional freshness and honesty of new discovery.

This is how Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin described Barack Obama’s win over Hillary Clinton to political colleagues in a restaurant a few days after Obama locked up the Democratic Party presidential nomination.

“Juneau is a small town; everybody knows everyone else,” he adds. “These stories about what she calls blacks and Eskimos, well, anyone not white and good looking actually, were around long before she became a glint in John McCain’s rheumy eyes. Why do I know they’re true? Because everyone who isn’t aboriginal or Indian in Alaska talks that way.”

A man–mongoose–robot team takes on Sri Lankan minefields

A trained mongoose sniffs the ground in search of mines. Behind the mongoose is an impediment sensor, which tells the robots (below) if it has bumped into something too solid to push out of the way.

Standing outside a Sri Lankan army base in the spring of 2007, Thrishantha Nanayakkara mapped an entire minefield without once setting foot in it. Nanayakkara held a remote control and periodically made a note on his computer. A mongoose hitched to a robot did most of the work.

Nanayakkara, a visiting scholar at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and a 2008-09 Radcliffe Institute fellow, picked an indigenous mongoose for its temperament, size (roughly 2.5 kilograms, light enough to step on a mine without detonating it), and sense of smell (able to detect explosives three meters away). He equipped his robot (roughly a meter long and half a meter wide) with a harness to keep the mongoose under control and a video camera

Through these and many similar practices, the government invokes the concept of a deity. Opponents of these religious invocations say such proclamations promote religion and thus violate the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause, which prohibits all laws “respecting an establishment of religion.” Defenders of governmental religious invocations, by contrast, claim that such expressions do not explicitly promote religion; rather, defenders say, religious proclamations merely acknowledge the historical and cultural connections between the United States and belief in God.

In an influential 1962 lecture, Dean Eugene Rostow of Yale Law School argued that the government’s “conventional and uncontroversial” expressions of faith, which he called acts of “ceremonial deism,” do not violate the Establishment Clause.

A Supreme Court justice first used the phrase “ceremonial deism” in an opinion in Lynch v. Donnelly (1984)

Examples: "nice and warm" instead of "nicely warm"; "sound and fury" instead of "furious sound"; "pain and toil" intead of "painful toil"; and so forth. First spotted in Robert Alter's footnote to Genesis 5.29.

Hendiadys

Hendiadys (a Latinized form of the Greek phrase ἓν διὰ δυοῖν hen dia duoin 'one through two') is a figure of speech used for emphasis — "The substitution of a conjunction for a subordination". The basic idea is to use two words linked by a conjunction to express a single complex idea.

The typical result is to transform a noun-plus-adjective into two nouns joined by a conjunction.

For example, "sound and fury" (from Act V, Scene V of Macbeth) seems to offer a more striking image than "furious sound". In this example, as typically, the subordinate idea originally present in the adjective is transformed into a noun in and of itself.

"The kingdom and the power and the glory" (from the Lord's Prayer) extends the principle, transforming the idea of a "glorious, powerful kingdom" into a sequence of three nouns joined by conjunctions.

Kind of an unnerving story if you ask me, but, hey, it's a post-9/11 world, and the cops are just trying to keep us all safe, right? Police released one person at a time from a protest-planning headquarters where people were detained in St. Paul on Friday night.

On Friday night the Ramsey County sheriff's department, accompanied by the St. Paul police, detained people inside a building here that was being used as a headquarters to plan protests.

“They handcuffed all of us,” said Sonia Silbert, 28, from Washington. “They searched everyone.”

People who had been inside said teach-ins and legal training had been conducted there, and that the space was also a repository for such items as computers and bicycles.

Ask the class to establish ground rules for the discussion. Some ideas you might want to propose to students before they begin discussion include:

Avoid blame and speculation.
Respect each other's views and avoid inflammatory language.
Share personal stories and feelings. (Be prepared for students to be emotional, and try to support and comfort them.)
Express anger and frustration within limits. (While it is important for students to express themselves, it is also vital to control the class and maintain an environment that feels safe for all students.)

The discipline of friendship

Friendship is a discipline. Maybe you've never thought of it that way. Meeting people and making friends might be easy for you; it is for me. Maintaining friendships however, is not as easy.

Similarly, friendship is a discipline. You've got to stick with it if you want to keep your skills. Being a true friend requires sustained effort, patience, forgiveness and most importantly a giving spirit. It's hard to overstate the importance of that last one. Truly being a friend requires a commitment to put the other person before yourself and your own needs.

I don't know about you, but it certainly takes work for me to give up my agenda. I have to keep practicing or I forget how. Fortunately, having even a couple of significant friendships gives me lots of chances to hone my agenda-dropping skills.
