Faces of rural poverty (38 pics)

This series of photos is a project by Carl Kiilsgaard, an American photographer, called The White Family.
The White family lives below the poverty line in a mobile home in eastern Kentucky and Carl Kiilsgaard has been visiting them for three years to document the rural poverty in the region through the eyes of this family.

Carl became an EPF finalist with his project. Some pictures are not easy to see but in all it’s a great work. Here’s what he says about it: “I would like my photographs to ask questions rather than present answers, to unlock emotions, and to be a part of the increasing dialogue in America dealing with social rights of the working and lower class.”

Is time up for time-out for New Zealand preschoolers?

Behaviour-control methods such as time-out and sending children to the "naughty step" are unprofessional teaching tactics in preschools, says an Auckland academic.

Unitec lecturer Pauline Bishop's comments have left early childhood centres scrambling for answers about what to do with naughty children - while other experts say Bishop is out of step.

She said Supernanny's techniques were fine in homes, but not in childhood centres. Rather than punishing children, teachers should be teaching them about their wrongs.

However, Grant was not a fan of Supernanny, calling Jo Frost the equivalent of an "A&E of hospitals ... she has to deal with wimpy parents who let them [children] run their lives".

Meanwhile, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers in Britain last week called for shows such as Supernanny to be screened after 9pm because they gave children ideas for winding up parents and teachers.

Society's vital networks prone to 'explosive' changes

US computer scientists have found that random networks – the mathematical description for networks we experience everyday in forms such as the internet and global flight connections – have the potential for extreme behaviour never seen before

Their findings might lead to improved understanding of how to control such networks

for example, to halt the spread of epidemics or improve the efficiency of delivery networks

The result is that for a long time the network grows, but does not become fully connected. Instead it contains a large number of unconnected chunks, each containing a few nodes. Eventually, the addition of just one link triggers an instantaneous phase change and the network becomes fully connected

We know that for some networks, like the internet, connectivity is a fundamental desired property

For others, like a virus spreading through a network of humans or computers, connectivity is a liability

I am fascinated by waterless urinals. The very notion that a ammonia and nitrogen filled bodily fluid can be disposed of by a device using no flushing or running water is truly amazing to me. After doing a little reading into the science behind the products I am now even more impressed at the simple genius behind the waterless urinal!

Waterless urinals all use basically the same science

Urine flows down the bowl

past a debris-catching strainer. The urine then passes through a sealing liquid, usually a specially designed oil based fluid or simply vegetable oil, and collects in the waste pipe below. The different densities of urine and oil (urine is denser than oil - oil floats!) mean that the urine sinks through the sealing liquid and the oil floats on top of the layer of urine below. Any air bubbles rise to the top and escape leaving the urine in a relatively low oxygen environment. Odor is therefore trapped below the oil layer and cannot find the nose of bathroom occupants

Scientists have come a bit closer to achieving the "Star Trek" feat of teleportation. No one is galaxy-hopping, or even beaming people around, but for the first time, information has been teleported between two separate atoms across a distance of a meter — about a yard.

Teleportation is one of nature's most mysterious forms of transport: Quantum information, such as the spin of a particle or the polarization of a photon, is transferred from one place to another, without traveling through any physical medium. It has previously been achieved between photons (a unit, or quantum, of electromagnetic radiation, such as light) over very large distances, between photons and ensembles of atoms, and between two nearby atoms through the intermediary action of a third.

None of those, however, provides a feasible means of holding and managing quantum information over long distances.

Analemma Over the Porch of Maidens

If you took a picture of the Sun at the same time each day, would it remain in the same position? The answer is no, and the shape traced out by the Sun over the course of a year is called an analemma. The Sun's apparent shift is caused by the Earth's motion around the Sun when combined with the tilt of the Earth's rotation axis. The Sun will appear at its highest point of the analemma during summer and at its lowest during winter. Today, the Winter Solstice day in Earth's northern hemisphere, the Sun is at the bottom of the analemma. Analemmas created from different latitudes would appear at least slightly different, as well as analemmas created at a different time each day. This particular analemma was built up by 46 separate Sun photographs taken during 2003 in Athens, Greece. Pictured in the foreground of this composite image are pillars called the Porch of Maidens, part of the ancient Erechtheum which was completed in 407 BC.

The document contends that our demands on natural resources overreach what the Earth can sustain by almost a third.

It says that more than three quarters of the world's population lives in countries where consumption levels are outstripping environmental renewal.

This makes them "ecological debtors", meaning that they are drawing - and often overdrawing - on the agricultural land, forests, seas and resources of other countries to sustain them.

The report concludes that the reckless consumption of "natural capital" is endangering the world's future prosperity, with clear economic impacts including high costs for food, water and energy.

"The events in the last few months have served to show us how it's foolish in the extreme to live beyond our means," said WWF's international president, Chief Emeka Anyaoku.

"Devastating though the financial credit crunch has been, it's nothing as compared to the ecological recession that we are facing."

"I feel like an old person now," Spears told Rolling Stone in an interview for the music magazine's December 11 issue.

By February, a California court named her father as a conservator of her estate, giving Jamie Spears control over her personal and business affairs. Since then, she seems to have put her life back in order.

The play consists of a reenactment of actual interviews with residents of Laramie, Wyo., following the torture and murder of Matthew Shepard, an openly gay university student, in 1998. Robinson folded the subject matter of the play into the story of his own experiences as the first openly gay bishop. As an advocate for gay and civil rights, Robinson has developed a friendship with Shepard's mother, Judy.

His own quest began when he went public with his sexuality in the early '80s. Raised in Kentucky, Robinson, 61, grew up with fundamentalist Christian teachings that did not approve of his sexuality.

"The word 'abomination' would always come up," said Robinson. "When you thought about gay people, you thought the good ones were the ones who killed themselves."

Robinson occupied the position until his election as bishop in 2004. Soon he was receiving death threats.

"I told my daughters there are worse things than death. Like not living your life."
