clipper's remarks: I just discovered that there is a cat show this weekend near my home, and that it will feature an obstacle course (described as a series of "agility trials"). This might be worth seeing. It's hard to picture.

Cat show featuring agility competition

PHOENIXVILLE — Cats from all over the country will be converging at CAT-Pickering this weekend for the Nova Cat Fanciers Allbreed Cat Show. Along with breed standard judging, cat agility trials will be sure to entertain the onlookers.

Does that catch your curiosity? Yes, cats can run an obstacle course! For the past decade, the sport of dog agility has taken the country by storm. Dogs are leaping over hurdles, caroming around weave poles and diving through tunnels. Cats will get their chance on Saturday and Sunday. The course will include tunnels, hoops, weave poles, stair steps and low, medium and high hurdles. Expect some cats to zoom through the course in just seconds.

clipper's remarks: I'm seriously thinking about going to this. Out of curiousity, really. My understanding is that it has a heavily evangelical, proselytizing flavor, but that isn't really indicated by the website.

clipper's remarks: Every year in the town where I live (Phoenixville, PA) they build a huge wooden bird and set it on fire (a phoenix). It's a great event -- classic communal catharsis.

Each year, more people flock to phoenix fire

It may not be surprising that every year in Phoenixville, a town of homegrown festivals and wacky artists, a sculpture of a phoenix is set on fire.

This year, the wooden sculpture will be set ablaze at 8 p.m. Saturday during the town's Firebird Festival.

Organizer Lynn Miller said, "The town was named for the bird," a symbol of rebirth. Legend goes that in 1813, the founder of the town's first iron company had a vision of a phoenix emerging from the flames and named his company Phoenix Works. Later, the town adopted the name Phoenixville in honor of its main industry.
