Senator John Ensign, Republican of Nevada, had an affair with a former employee that was confirmed when the woman's husband found an incriminating text message.

Text messages are the new lipstick on the collar, the mislaid credit card bill. Instantaneous and seemingly casual, they can be confirmation of a clandestine affair, a record of the not-so-discreet who sometimes forget that everything digital leaves a footprint.

This became painfully obvious a week ago when a woman who claims to have had an affair with Tiger Woods told a celebrity publication that he had sent her flirty text messages, some of which were published. It follows on the heels of politicians who ran afoul of text I.Q., including a former Detroit mayor who went to prison after his steamy text messages to an aide were revealed, and Senator John Ensign of Nevada, whose affair with a former employee was confirmed by an incriminating text message.

HELENA, Mont. — In Montana, a rabbi is an unusual sight. So when a Hasidic one walked into the State Capitol last December, with his long beard, black hat and long black coat, a police officer grabbed his bomb-sniffing German shepherd and went to ask the exotic visitor a few questions.

Though there are few Jews in Montana today, there once were many. In the late 19th century, there were thriving Jewish populations in the mining towns, where Jews emigrated to work as butchers, clothiers, jewelers, tailors and the like.

The city of Butte had kosher markets, a Jewish mayor, a B’nai B’rith lodge and three synagogues. Helena, the capital city, had Temple Emanu-El, built in 1891 with a seating capacity of 500.

Vinyl Records and Turntables Are Gaining Sales

At a glance, the far corner of the main floor of J&R Music looks familiar to anybody old enough to have scratched a record by accident. There are cardboard boxes filled with albums by the likes of Miles Davis and the Beach Boys that could be stacked in any musty attic in America.

But this is no music morgue; it is more like a life-support unit for an entertainment medium that has managed to avoid extinction, despite numerous predictions to the contrary. The bins above the boxes hold new records — freshly pressed albums of classic rock as well as vinyl versions of the latest releases from hip-hop icons like 50 Cent and Diddy and new pop stars like Norah Jones and Lady Gaga.

And with the curious resurgence of vinyl, a parallel revival has emerged: The turntable, once thought to have taken up obsolescence with reel-to-reel and eight-track tape players, has been reborn.

Married (Happily) With Issues

By trying to make their good marriage better, Elizabeth Weil and Daniel Duane tested it.

I have a pretty good marriage. It could be better. There are things about my husband that drive me crazy. Last spring he cut apart a frozen pig’s head with his compound miter saw in our basement. He needed the head to fit into a pot so that he could make pork stock. I’m no saint of a spouse, either. I hate French kissing, compulsively disagree and fake sleep when Dan vomits in the middle of the night. Dan also once threatened to punch my brother at a family reunion at a lodge in Maine. But in general we do O.K.

The idea of trying to improve our union came to me one night in bed. I’ve never really believed that you just marry one day at the altar or before a justice of the peace. I believe that you become married — truly married — slowly, over time, through all the road-rage incidents and precolonoscopy enemas,

Cancer From the Kitchen?

The battle over health care focuses on access to insurance, or tempests like the one that erupted over new mammogram guidelines.

But what about broader public health challenges? What if breast cancer in the United States has less to do with insurance or mammograms and more to do with contaminants in our water or air -- or in certain plastic containers in our kitchens? What if the surge in asthma and childhood leukemia reflect, in part, the poisons we impose upon ourselves?

This last week I attended a fascinating symposium at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, exploring whether certain common chemicals are linked to breast cancer and other ailments.

Pixable Wants to Get Photo Albums Off the Web

The company offers a service that allows users to create photo books from their pictures on the Web. After selecting images from Flickr, Picasa, Facebook accounts or a PC, the final product is assembled by a third-party production company and shipped to the user.

“Facebook is the biggest repository of digital pictures on the Web,” said Andres Blank, one of the founders of the company. “We’re creating a new opportunity for people to create gifts.”

Mr. Blank said the idea for Pixable was conceived after he lost his camera during a 2008 trip to Japan. “I kept asking my friends to send me all the pictures they took so I could keep a copy for my hard drive. But they all just directed me to Facebook,” he said. “That’s when I thought it would be cool if I could somehow create an album from everyone’s photos.”

Did you guys see the New York Times article online about Stuck In Customs and HDR Photography? tierneylab.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/11/12/thursday-puzzle-w... Cool! John Tierney wrote a great little piece and asked if publications like the New York Times should consider using HDR Photos. They have an open commenting system over there, so pop in and give them your two cents (the newspapers need it!).

Daily Photo - Crossing the Bridge into Old Lyon

This was a pretty tough shot to get! This was a little pedestrian bridge that crossed from the new part of Lyon, France, into the older part. It swayed and buckled in the breeze. Plus, it was night, so you kind of have to leave the shutter open for a long time. I hate to crank up the ISO, but I had to so everything would stay sharp.

France Tries to Define Frenchness

The Eiffel Tower last month was lit up in red to mark its 120th anniversary.

PARIS — Ascending, and descending, the Eiffel Tower the other day, it seemed a fitting moment to reflect on what a nation’s soaring prestigious attractions say about the country itself and the people who live there.

One thing the Eiffel Tower says is simply: We are different, and proudly so.

It enshrines no lofty notion like the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, built in 1791 as an emblem of peace, and reinvented much later as the symbol of Germany’s reunification; it is not home to monarchs like Buckingham Palace in London or a haven for great art like the Prado in Madrid or the Palais du Louvre down below in Paris. It offers no homage to the divine like the Pantheon in Rome or the Sultan Ahmet mosque in Istanbul.

It does not tell the time, like London’s Big Ben,
