Bush set to announce $1 billion in aid for Georgia

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush will issue a statement at 2 p.m. EDT on a $1 billion aid package for war-torn U.S. ally Georgia, a U.S. official said on Wednesday.

The planned assistance to Georgia, which battled Russia over a separatist province last month, would stretch over several years, another U.S. official said. The aid package comes as Vice President Dick Cheney traveled to former Soviet republics to show U.S. support for regional allies.

Hurricane Gustav: The Response

Senator Obama will be using his e-mail list to bring in aid for those affected by Gustav:

Sen. Barack Obama announced that his campaign would mobilize supporters from his enormous e-mail list to send money or enlist as volunteers once the impact of Hurricane Gustav becomes apparent.

McCain, on the other hand, seems to look at Gustav as a campaign backdrop and not an impending national disaster. He and his entourage are planning to go into the storm zone, a move that will likely cause first responders and other authorities to have to deal with the McCain campaign’s logistics rather than the job of dealing with the hurricane.

Of course, Republican “leaders” using storm zones as window dressing is more of the same.

GHENT, W.Va. - Fumes from a leaking propane tank exploded inside a convenience store near a ski resort Tuesday, shattering the building into a pile of debris and killing at least four people, authorities said.

At least five other people were seriously hurt at the Flat Top Little General Store, where scarcely anything remained except twisted metal and a sign showing the price of gasoline.

Stonehenge workers' village found

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Archaeologists have uncovered what may have been a village for workers or festival-goers near the mysterious stone circle Stonehenge in England.

The village was located at Durrington Walls, about two miles from Stonehenge, and is also the location of a wooden version of the stone circle.

A device the size of a sugar cube will be able to record and store high resolution video footage of every second of a human life within two decades, experts said yesterday.

Researchers said governments and societies must urgently debate the implications of the huge increases in computing power and the growing mass of information being collected on individuals.

Some fear that the advent of "human black boxes" combined with the extension of medical, financial and other digital records will lead to loss of privacy and a dramatic expansion of the nanny state.
