Twitter A Dead End Investment For Small Business

Do It If…

…you enjoy it and have spare time. If it’s a fun hobby and you have no or little expectations regarding Twitter and your small business, go for it. That’s what I do. I enjoy it. I’m working at it but it’s not really work.

If I saw it as work (like doing paperwork, filling out tax forms), I simply would not do it, because the payoff is so unlikely. So here’s the bottom line:

Don’t invest your time in Twitter unless it’s fun and recognize:

you probably will never see any positive business return

there’s a significant chance that Twitter may not exist in two years

that what you write is like a feather in the wind and has almost no life span.

Tags: twitter, fun, trends, fads

<clipSource>http://smallbusiness411.org/wp/small-business-and-the-internet/twitter-a-dead-end-investment-for-small-business/</clipSource>

July 1: Canada Day - Background

clipped by: This talk was presented at The New Emergency Conference in Dublin, on June 11, 2009.

The title of this talk is a bit of a mouthful, but what I want to say can be summed up in simpler words: we all have to prepare for life without much money, where imported goods are scarce, and where people have to provide for their own needs, and those of their immediate neighbours. I will take as my point of departure the unfolding collapse of the global economy, and discuss what might come next.

It started with the collapse of the financial markets last year, and is now resulting in unprecedented decreases in the volumes of international trade.

Tags: globalization, localization, environment, economy, sustainability, reality

<clipSource>http://culturechange.org/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=457&Itemid=1</clipSource>

First Hydroponic Rooftop Farm in N.Y.C.

clipped by: egsnyder

Clip Source: twitter.com

FullCircles

Gotham Greens Building First Hydroponic Rooftop Farm in NYC : New York City imports $1 billion in vegetables eve.. http://bit.ly/9EVq0

<clipSource>http://twitter.com/FullCircles/status/2185473468</clipSource>

Shop in the Free/Re-conomy: Gain huge purchasing leverage

clipped by: egsnyder
clipper's remarks: Food for thought! I wanted this to last seven days, but I hit my limit today and had to end the project early. All the foraging experts told me in advance that the last week of May would be a pretty much impossible time of year to eat only fresh wild edibles because it's an in between time -- a time after the spring mushrooms but before the summer fruits and berries -- so there are few calories available besides meat or fish, and even those are not necessarily easy to come by without much skill and knowledge. Now I can tell you from first-hand experience that they are absolutely correct about that.

I ended up fasting except for herbal teas and root foods, and it turns out the roots were mainly diuretics, liver tonics and laxatives, so I was doing a real number on my body. Survival projects like this can be incredibly educational but are rarely much fun, because they push you to the limits of what you can endure.

Tags: food security, food, survival

<clipSource>http://www.culturechange.org/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=441&Itemid=1</clipSource>

Google Wave: Email re-invented?

clipped by: egsnyder
clipper's remarks: Here's an upcoming discontinuity. Yesterday's Google I/O keynote highlighted the power of HTML 5 to match functionality long experienced in desktop applications. This morning, Google plans to announce an HTML 5-based application - still very much in the early stages of development - that represents a profound advance in the state of the art.

Lars and Jens Rasmussen, the original creators of Google Maps, will take the stage to unveil their latest project, Google Wave. As Lars describes it, "We set out to answer the question: What would email look like if we set out to invent it today?"

You can get morels for free if you hunt around downed cottonwood trees in areas with moist soil near watersources. A mushroom expert I know says they also grow in forests that have been burned to char. To harvest morels, slice them at the base. At home, cut them in half and let them soak in salt water for 30 to 45 minutes. That sterilizes them and gets rid of the slugs that sometimes live inside them. I recommend sauteing your morels in garlic and butter.

Tags: fungi, morels, mushrooms

<clipSource>http://rebeccalernerwilderness.wordpress.com/2009/05/10/morels-luxurious-and-free/</clipSource>

Death by Prescription

clipped by: egsnyder
clipper's remarks: The author is a Canadian Federal politician who lost his teenage daughter as a result of a wrongly prescribed drug.

Young was featured on TVO's "The Agenda" last evening.

Clip Source: astore.amazon.com

Death by Prescription: A Father Takes on His Daughter's Killer - the Multi-Billion Dollar Pharmaceutical Companies
