Twitter A Dead End Investment For Small Business

Do It If…

…you enjoy it and have spare time. If it’s a fun hobby and you have no or little expectations regarding Twitter and your small business, go for it. That’s what I do. I enjoy it. I’m working at it but it’s not really work.

If I saw it as work (like doing paperwork, filling out tax forms), I simply would not do it, because the payoff is so unlikely. So here’s the bottom line:

Don’t invest your time in Twitter unless it’s fun and recognize:

you probably will never see any positive business return

there’s a significant chance that Twitter may not exist in two years

that what you write is like a feather in the wind and has almost no life span.

On June 20, 1868, a proclamation signed by the Governor General, Lord Monck, called upon all Her Majesty's loving subjects throughout Canada to join in the celebration of the anniversary of the formation of the union of the British North America provinces in a federation under the name of Canada on July 1^st.

The July 1 holiday was established by statute in 1879, under the name Dominion Day.

This talk was presented at The New Emergency Conference in Dublin, on June 11, 2009.

The title of this talk is a bit of a mouthful, but what I want to say can be summed up in simpler words: we all have to prepare for life without much money, where imported goods are scarce, and where people have to provide for their own needs, and those of their immediate neighbours. I will take as my point of departure the unfolding collapse of the global economy, and discuss what might come next. It started with the collapse of the financial markets last year, and is now resulting in unprecedented decreases in the volumes of international trade.

In a ReUseIt community posting a couple of days ago, I mentioned purchasing an unused hand blender at a yard sale for $1.50. Today was day 3 using the "new" blender to make our morning smoothies. It works perfectly. It does exactly what needs to be done... chops up the frozen fruit, mixes the yogurt, ground flax, milk, etc. into an easy-to-eat, painless, pleasurable breakfast.

Cost $1.50...

Shopping below the retail radar in the Free / Re conomy in this case provides us with the purchasing power to make 68 more $1.50 purchases with the savings! Wow! Turn off the tv!

An early end for the project, and some reflections

I wanted this to last seven days, but I hit my limit today and had to end the project early. All the foraging experts told me in advance that the last week of May would be a pretty much impossible time of year to eat only fresh wild edibles because it's an in between time -- a time after the spring mushrooms but before the summer fruits and berries -- so there are few calories available besides meat or fish, and even those are not necessarily easy to come by without much skill and knowledge. Now I can tell you from first-hand experience that they are absolutely correct about that. I ended up fasting except for herbal teas and root foods, and it turns out the roots were mainly diuretics, liver tonics and laxatives, so I was doing a real number on my body. Survival projects like this can be incredibly educational but are rarely much fun, because they push you to the limits of what you can endure.

Yesterday's Google I/O keynote highlighted the power of HTML 5 to match functionality long experienced in desktop applications. This morning, Google plans to announce an HTML 5-based application - still very much in the early stages of development - that represents a profound advance in the state of the art.

Lars and Jens Rasmussen, the original creators of Google Maps, will take the stage to unveil their latest project, Google Wave. As Lars describes it, "We set out to answer the question: What would email look like if we set out to invent it today?"

Portland restaurants pay up to $40/pound for these fun guys, considered to be among the planet’s most delectable mushrooms. You can get morels for free if you hunt around downed cottonwood trees in areas with moist soil near watersources. A mushroom expert I know says they also grow in forests that have been burned to char. To harvest morels, slice them at the base. At home, cut them in half and let them soak in salt water for 30 to 45 minutes. That sterilizes them and gets rid of the slugs that sometimes live inside them. I recommend sauteing your morels in garlic and butter.

Seems that a snake CAN swallow a kangaroo. But it may take weeks to digest.

But Value Village CANNOT "digest" overflow donations, the aftermath of unsold "stuff" from weekend garage/yard sales! Consequently, lots and lots of perfectly good, reusable stuff ends up in the dumpster and the landfills.

Any thoughts on avoiding this queueing, peak period problem?
