So he tries mental tricks. One is to ask “what can we take away to create something new?” A decade ago, you could have started with Yahoo! and taken away all the clutter around the search box to get Google. When he took Blogger and took away everything except one 140-character line, he had Twitter. Radical constraints, he believes, can lead to breakthroughs in simplicity and entirely new things.

Tags: innovation, entrepreneurship

<clipSource>http://www.economist.com/research/articlesBySubject/displayStory.cfm?story_id=10328123&subjectID=348975&fsrc=nwl&emailauth=%2528%2528%2520%253E4A03FZPH%2520%250A</clipSource>

Margaret Mead

clipped by: Socratoad
clipper's remarks: Shall we?

Clip Source: womenshistory.about.com

• Never doubt that a small, group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. The list includes phthalates, a family of some 120 chemicals linked to reproductive problems in men and wildlife, and parabens, a preservative with a suspected link to breast cancer.

Though concentrations of such chemicals in water are probably too low to be harmful, the effects of their breakdown products are poorly understood, says Jeff Hardy of the RSC. "We do not know if the breakdown products affect the health of people." The cocktail effect may also make these chemicals more harmful, he adds.

Tags: water, science, life, environment

<clipSource>http://environment.newscientist.com/article/mg19626343.300-water-may-hide-harmful-chemical-cocktail.html</clipSource>

The Spread of Ideologies: ClipCast v. The Rise of Bengali Islam

clipped by: ouyangwulong
clipper's remarks: Although I've always enjoyed using clipmarks as a tool to research social trends and ideologies, with Clipcast, Clipmarks is rapidly becoming a subject worthy of such research itself.

Consider this: The effect of making Clipmarks (and it's community of ardent followers) mobile, and capable of organizing in more than one internet context is remarkably similar to the way in which Islam spread over much of South and South Eastern Asia.

For those who are interested, I heartily suggest reading Richard Eaton's "The Rise of Islam on the Bengal Frontier." I've clipped its thesis here. It is one of the most interesting and insightfully approaches to understanding the interaction between social and ideological groups. It goes well beyond the coarse but popular theories of war and mercantilism in explaining the reason for Islamic success in a part of the world that America has failed miserably at influencing.

Clip Source: biz.yahoo.com

<img src="http://clipmarks.com/image_cache/ouyangwulong/512/AE4F288F-23B3-4F76-9560-22B02E3C672A.gif" alt="Yahoo! It would be wrong, however, to view Islam as some impersonal agency

assimilating great numbers of people into a single framework of piety. Rather, the religion was itself
continuously reinterpreted as different social classes in different periods became its dominant carriers

In short, Bengal’s eastern zone was not only an agrarian and political frontier, but also a cultural one, as Islam became

New data from a fleet of Nasa satellites shows the lights - also known as the aurora borealis - are formed when solar particles are whisked along temporary "magnetic ropes" linking the Sun to the Earth at astonishing spin what is called a substorm.

The geomagnetic storm powering the auroras raced 400 miles in a minute across the sky

The energy released is the equivalent of a magnitude 5.5 earthquake, scientists say

The satellites monitored their first display in March.

"The substorm behaved quite unexpectedly," said Dr Vassilis Angelopoulos, of the University of California at Los Angeles.

The quintet of Themis satellites that made the discovery

"The auroras surged westward twice as fast as anyone thought possible, crossing 15 degrees of longitude in less than one minute.

"The storm traversed an entire polar time zone, or 400 miles, in 60 seconds flat."

ouyangwulong
clipper's remarks: I must admit, I clipped this partly just so I could be the first to tag a clip with "Monkey Sacrifice." (Look it up! I'm the first!)

This is a fascinating temple to me for many reasons. It shows a diversity in Pre-Columbian cultures that is often overlooked in favor of stereotypes of a few high-profile cultures (The Inca, the Maya, the Aztecs, etc.) But it also seriously shows that it is time for us to start considering whether to retire the rusty old land bridge theory.

Increasingly, it seems only logical that trans-oceanic travel was not the exclusive domain of "civilized" Europeans. Nor was being "civilized" for that matter.

World history is a lot more complex than our myopic record of it. Fortunately, there are still exciting archaeological finds like this one to open our eyes.

Clip Source: news.nationalgeographic.com

Ancient "Fire Temple" Found in Peru

November 12, 2007—A massive clay temple with colorful paintings and an altar for fire worship has recently been unearthed in northern Peru, archaeologists announced Saturday.

The temple dates back 4,000 years and is among the oldest sites discovered in the Americas, said archaeologist Walter Alva, who led the team that made the find.

The temple was built by an "advanced civilization" that predated the Inca by several centuries, Alva told the Reuters news service.

"This discovery shows an architectural and iconographic tradition different from what has been known until now," he said.

When the site's use was complete, the culture that built the temple covered it with earth,
