Seems improbable that something so deliciously bad for your waistline could benefit your health

This year I've thought about going retro, with an old-fashioned box of chocolate. Given all the positive news stories about dark chocolate, it seems a solid candidate.

In January, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) published the most convincing study yet linking flavanol-rich cocoa to improved blood-vessel health.

the Archives of Internal Medicine reported that Dutch men who ate the most chocolate had a 47 percent lower mortality rate over 15 years than a similar group that consumed little chocolate.

November, a new chocolate called CocoaVia got a lift from the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, which reported that two (small) bars a day lowered LDL cholesterol in a high-cholesterol subject group by 6.7 percent.

It's enough to make you look for Willy Wonka's nearest factory.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Nanosolar, a heavily financed Silicon Valley start-up whose backers include Google’s co-founders, plans to announce Tuesday that it has begun selling its innovative solar panels, which are made using a technique that is being held out as the future of solar power manufacturing.

Nanosolar’s founder and chief executive, Martin Roscheisen, claims to be the first solar panel manufacturer to be able to profitably sell solar panels for less than $1 a watt. That is the price at which solar energy becomes less expensive than coal.

According to the Energy Department, building a new coal plant costs about $2.1 a watt, plus the cost of fuel and emissions, he said.

Next time you're washing your hair, spare a thought for your neighbours' health. A report by the UK's Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) says chemicals from consumer products and drugs could be breaking down and recombining into a harmful brew in water supplies.

The report, released on Monday, says synthetic chemicals in shampoos, perfumes, medicines and other healthcare products that are washed down the drain are sneaking through the filters at water purification plants. The list includes phthalates, a family of some 120 chemicals linked to reproductive problems in men and wildlife, and parabens, a preservative with a suspected link to breast cancer.

Though concentrations of such chemicals in water are probably too low to be harmful, the effects of their breakdown products are poorly understood, says Jeff Hardy of the RSC. "We do not know if the breakdown products affect the health of people." The cocktail effect may also make these chemicals more harmful, he adds.

clipper's remarks: Although I've always enjoyed using clipmarks as a tool to research social trends and ideologies, with Clipcast, Clipmarks is rapidly becoming a subject worthy of such research itself.

Consider this: The effect of making Clipmarks (and it's community of ardent followers) mobile, and capable of organizing in more than one internet context is remarkably similar to the way in which Islam spread over much of South and South Eastern Asia.

For those who are interested, I heartily suggest reading Richard Eaton's "The Rise of Islam on the Bengal Frontier." I've clipped its thesis here. It is one of the most interesting and insightfully approaches to understanding the interaction between social and ideological groups. It goes well beyond the coarse but popular theories of war and mercantilism in explaining the reason for Islamic success in a part of the world that America has failed miserably at influencing.

A top adviser to Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign said that Democrats should give more thought to Sen. Barack Obama’s admissions of illegal drug use before they pick a presidential candidate.

Obama’s campaign said the Clinton people were getting desperate. Clinton’s campaign tried to distance itself from the remarks Wednesday, and the adviser said later he regretted making them.

Shaheen, an attorney and veteran organizer, said much of Obama’s background is unknown and could be a problem in November 2008 if he is the Democratic nominee. He said Republicans would work hard to discover new aspects of Obama’s admittedly spotty youth.

“It’ll be, ‘When was the last time? Did you ever give drugs to anyone? Did you sell them to anyone?’”

Bill Shaheen, a national co-chairman of Clinton’s front-runner campaign, raised the issue during an interview with The Washington Post, posted on washingtonpost.com.

The mystery of what causes the Northern Lights, one of Nature's most spectacular displays, to shimmer so brightly has been solved.

New data from a fleet of Nasa satellites shows the lights - also known as the aurora borealis - are formed when solar particles are whisked along temporary "magnetic ropes" linking the Sun to the Earth at astonishing spin what is called a substorm.

The geomagnetic storm powering the auroras raced 400 miles in a minute across the sky

The energy released is the equivalent of a magnitude 5.5 earthquake, scientists say

The satellites monitored their first display in March.

"The substorm behaved quite unexpectedly," said Dr Vassilis Angelopoulos, of the University of California at Los Angeles.

"The auroras surged westward twice as fast as anyone thought possible, crossing 15 degrees of longitude in less than one minute.

clipper's remarks: I must admit, I clipped this partly just so I could be the first to tag a clip with "Monkey Sacrifice." (Look it up! I'm the first!)

This is a fascinating temple to me for many reasons. It shows a diversity in Pre-Columbian cultures that is often overlooked in favor of stereotypes of a few high-profile cultures (The Inca, the Maya, the Aztecs, etc.) But it also seriously shows that it is time for us to start considering whether to retire the rusty old land bridge theory.

Increasingly, it seems only logical that trans-oceanic travel was not the exclusive domain of "civilized" Europeans. Nor was being "civilized" for that matter.

World history is a lot more complex than our myopic record of it. Fortunately, there are still exciting archaeological finds like this one to open our eyes.

Ancient "Fire Temple" Found in Peru

November 12, 2007—A massive clay temple with colorful paintings and an altar for fire worship has recently been unearthed in northern Peru, archaeologists announced Saturday.

The temple dates back 4,000 years and is among the oldest sites discovered in the Americas, said archaeologist Walter Alva, who led the team that made the find.

The temple was built by an "advanced civilization" that predated the Inca by several centuries, Alva told the Reuters news service.
