If you're reading this, then you're on a computer and you have internet access, so this likely isn't an issue for you. But for so many others, something we consider so basic is perhaps their greatest challenge. I tip my hat to Alyssa Milano for again reminding people to be grateful and to help those who aren't as lucky.

Clip Source: www.huffingtonpost.com

As we take a sip of our water from the fridge and don't think twice about it, there are people that have to walk hours a day fetching unsafe water from remote areas. Imagine that. Imagine having to walk for hours and hours, every day, just to retrieve contaminated water that will most likely get you sick and maybe even kill you. And the time spent collecting this water, keeps children out of school and women from pursuing economic growth. Not having access to clean drinking water perpetuates the cycle of poverty.

Tags: alyssa milano, birthday, water

<clipSource>http://www.huffingtonpost.com/alyssa-milano/im-giving-up-my-37th-birt_b_384981.html</clipSource>

Don't drink the (tap) water...

clipped by: egoldstein
clipper's remarks: This article reports that many communities throughout the U.S. are not following guidelines for providing safe drinking water and regulators are aware of it and not doing anything about it.
I have milked Splash, our Jersey cow, by hand; drunk the warm milk, skimmed the cream which comes to the top when it is cooled (naughty), made butter (not cheese); used her straw and cow pats to make rich compost; watched her jokes (all animals have unique personalities); had my foot stepped on; lugged hundreds of hay and straw bales. (NB. Staw is for bedding, hay is for eating.) Although milking is hard on the thumb and index finger, once through training, the process is one of peaceful meditation, both for the human and the cow. Industrial agriculture removes the key aspect of animal husbandry, the personal relationship.

But you couldn't pay me to give up my couch to go to the game. Whether it's the drunk, loud fans, the relatively uncomfortable seats, the cold weather, the traffic getting in and out of the stadium, the fact that there are so many breaks in the action, the cost of the tickets, or the picture on my hi-def tv, there are just so many reasons i'd rather watch on my couch than go to the game. Sounds like i'm not the only one who feels this way and the league is concerned...

Clip Source: www.usatoday.com

The effort reflects rising concern among league officials that boozed-up, unruly fans are scaring away the family audience at a time when the number and quality of NFL game telecasts are increasing the attractiveness of watching at home for far less money.

Tags: alcohol, football, sports, tailgating

<clipSource>http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/2009-11-18-1a-cover-nfl-fans_N.htm</clipSource>

Do ideas matter?

clipped by: egoldstein
clipper's remarks: Interesting perspective by Chris Dixon (@cdixon) about investing in people, not ideas. Many people who voted for Obama, including myself, did so primarily out of hope that his spirit and belief in change deserved a chance to succeed. My candid perspective is that his spirit began to diminish during his swearing in and has continued to dissipate ever since. It's hard to understand and very frustrating...but i think my feelings of disappointment are shared by many in this country.

Clip Source: www.nytimes.com

Meanwhile, the Democratic base, so energized last year, has lost much of its passion, at least partly because the administration’s soft-touch approach to Wall Street has seemed to many like a betrayal of their ideals.

Tags: obama, politics

<clipSource>http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/06/opinion/06krugman.html?_r=2&th&emc=th#</clipSource>

GOP uses Amplify to focus the health care debate

clipped by: egoldstein
clipper's remarks: One of the greatest challenges of our time is trying understand the complex issues being debated in Washington. Whether it's regarding the Swine Flu, global warming or in this case, the proposed health care bill, people need a better way to understand it all. I am incredibly excited that the House Republicans are using Amplify to take transparency to a whole new level in regards to the legislative process. Forgive me for sounding a bit corny, but i think this is truly a great thing for our democracy.

Clip Source: healthcaretruth.amplify.com

As House Republicans continue to battle Speaker Pelosi’s $1.3 trillion government takeover of health care, they’re using a new tool - Amplify.com - to engage the American people in a section-by-section dialogue scrutinizing all 1,990 pages of PelosiCare. Republicans hope the new site will provide the American people with an unfiltered online clearinghouse for emerging information about the Pelosi bill as Democrats attempt to bring the massive legislation to a vote.

The idea is simple. As House Republicans pour pore through the Speaker’s health care monstrosity and uncover harmful provisions not being disclosed to the American people by the majority, Amplify allows House Republicans to clip specific portions and explain what they mean in plain English.

Tags: gop, health care

<clipSource>http://healthcaretruth.amplify.com/</clipSource>

Joe Girardi...the Yankees mis-manager.

clipped by: egoldstein
clipper's remarks: I amplify'd this from an article that all frustrated Yankee fans should read - on just how absurd Girardi's management approach is.
