Today, police departments across the United States more closely resemble an occupying army than they do public servants responding to calls for help. Police officers can now be seen wearing helmets and body armor and carrying AR-15's, just to deliver simple warrants. The militarization of our police departments not only gives the appearance of a military dictatorship but places the public at great risk.

No less than 70 percent of U.S. cities now have SWAT teams. In cities with a population of 50,000 or more, 90 percent have SWAT teams.

SWAT teams were designed to deal with very violent individuals who represent a clear and present threat to the public. However, they are now being used to execute warrants on non-violent offenders and even those who have no prior criminal history at all. Turning our neighborhood cops into shock troops will do nothing but erode public confidence in the police and endanger the lives of innocent Americans

The first high school dedicated to preparing students for the front lines in the Nation's homeland security has gone from theory to planning in Wilmington

Curriculum choices for students, who are to be called Cadets, range from SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) through prison guard, water rescue, paramedic, fireman, professional demolition and emergency response operator, according to a Board statement.

To meet personal curriculum goals, all physically capable cadets are to attend a daily after-school exercise program. In addition, two hours of after-school sports or homeland security training will be available for cadet volunteers

Raytheon Company’s newest research facility in Salt Lake City, Utah, is developing a robotic suit for the soldier of tomorrow. Known as the Exoskeleton, it’s essentially a wearable robot that amplifies its wearer’s strength, endurance, and agility.

Built from a combination of sensors, actuators and controllers, the futuristic suit enables a user to easily carry a man on his back or lift 200 pounds several hundred times without tiring. Yet the suit, which is being developed for the U.S. Army, is also agile enough to let its wearer kick a soccer ball, punch a speed bag, and climb stairs and ramps with ease.

Development of the Exoskeleton has been underway since 2000, when Jacobsen realized that if humans could work alongside robots, they should also be able to work inside robots.

Probably the coolest story in the “local food” movement that I’ve heard yet. A bakery in Massachusetts has started to distribute wheat berries (seeds) to customers to plant 100 sq. ft. plots of wheat in their yards. They plan a hand-scythed harvest in the summer. I think that this is a great idea, and it will be interesting to see how productive the 10 x 10 plots of “front yard” wheat are

Stevens and Maffei, who have been trying to interest local farmers in looking again at growing wheat, are researching four or five heirloom varieties of the grain, which they plan to distribute to customers to try square-foot plots on their lawns as a test.

Straphangers getting off the No. 1 train in Columbus Circle on Thursday came face-to-face with a sign of the times: NYPD cops armed with submachine guns, body armor, and bomb-sniffing dogs patrolling the subways.

"I just got off the subway on my way to work and there are cops with big rifles. It's pretty intimidating," said Makeda Mays-Green, who ran into the teams after getting off a No. 1 train in Columbus Circle.

The Torch teams join the NYPD existing counterterrorism arsenal, including bag searches of subway riders and the regular patrols of its 2,600 transit officers.

"I wish we could live in a world where you don't need police officers with machine guns in your subway stations, but unfortunately that's not where we are today," said Skolnik, who lives in Israel.

Who profits from the Iraq war? More than a quarter of senators and congressmen have invested at least $196 million of their own money in companies doing business with the Department of Defense (DoD) that profit from the death and destruction in Iraq.

Congressmen gave themselves a loophole so they only have to report their assets in broad ranges. Thus, they can be off as much as 160 percent. (Try giving the IRS an estimate like that.) In 2004, the first full year after the present Iraq war began, Republican and Democratic lawmakers—both hawks and doves—invested between $74.9 million and $161.3 million in companies under contract with the DoD. In 2006 Democrats had at least $3.7 million invested in the defense sector alone, compared to the Republicans’ “only” $577,500. As the war raged on, so did the billions of profits—and personal investments by Congress members in war contractors, which increased 5 percent from 2004 to 2006.

Ahead of a crucial primary in Pennsylvania, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said if she were president and Israel was attacked by Iran with nuclear weapons, the US would "totally obliterate" Iran.

"In the next 10 years, during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them," Clinton said in an interview for ABC's Good Morning America.

Clinton's opponent Barack Obama accused her of sabre-rattling, saying this was the kind of language that had been used by the Bush administration over the last years.

Iran does not have nuclear weapons and insists that its uranium enrichment programme, which sparks Israel's fierce protests, is purely for civilian purposes.

JERUSALEM (AFP) — Israel on Wednesday played down the impact of the arrest in New York of an 84-year-old US army veteran on charges of spying for the Jewish state nearly 30 years ago.

"We would expect that Israel would not be engaged in such activities," said Tom Casey, a US State Department spokesman.

The government publicly admitted in 1998 that Pollard had been an agent acting on its behalf and awarded him Israeli citizenship.

"What apparently is irritating the Americans is that we had told them Pollard was our only agent, and this new affair could raise questions," said former Mossad boss Danny Yatom, now a member of parliament.

Jailers may have used stun gun on cat

The investigation comes after a scathing criminal grand jury report last week that found deputies at Theo Lacy Jail sent personal text messages and watched TV while inmates beat a fellow inmate to death. Another inmate died last week after being Tasered at the jail.

A tipster told the department Monday that jail personnel had used a stun gun on the cat. The animal was later found dead on the jail grounds, between two fences, said John McDonald, sheriff's spokesman. It had been dead several weeks.

The Government Accountability Office recently released a report entitled "Government Purchase Cards: Actions Needed to Strengthen Internal Controls to Reduce Fraudulent, Improper, and Abusive Purchases". The report for the 2006 fiscal year detailed certain improper charges that were put on government credit cards.
