To prevent condemned meat from being rerouted and used for human consumption, government regulations require that meat is "denatured" before removal from the slaughterhouse and shipment to rendering facilities. In my time as a veterinary meat inspector, we denatured with carbolic acid (a potentially corrosive disinfectant) and/or creosote (used for wood-preservation or as a disinfectant). Both substances are highly toxic. According to federal meat inspection regulations, fuel oil, kerosene, crude carbolic acid and citronella

all are approved denaturing materials.

Condemned livestock carcasses treated with these chemicals can become meat and bone meal for the pet food industry. Because rendering facilities are not government controlled, any animal carcasses can be rendered -- even dogs and cats. As Eileen Layne of the CVMA told the Chronicle, "When you read pet food labels, and it says 'meat and bone meal,' that's what it is: cooked and converted animals, including some dogs and cats."

The Monsanto blog said my choice of cells for the study was not biological but political. This argument is void. The blog said we used high concentration of Roundup residue. This is incorrect. We tested different Roundup formulations on fresh placenta, embryonic cells, umbilical cord cells and hepatic cell lines. Even when the formulations were diluted almost 100,000 times, the cells were destroyed. The actual concentration in GM food and feed is much higher than what we tested. Consuming it can even lead to defects in newborns.

In general this is a good article, covering many important issues. However, the author needs to do a little research. Japan and Canada have not approved rGBH in dairy products, and in fact, have refused to do so. The Codex Alimentarius Commission, United Nations body that sets international food standards, has to date refused to approve rBST as safe. And while Monsanto is the creator of rGBH, they have gotten rid of it. Eli Lilly now manufactures and sells it. Interesting that a company that also manufactures breast cancer drugs is in charge of rGBH. In fact, the Breast Cancer Action Network has laid siege on Eli Lilly over this issue. So it seems that not all of the info in here is correct and/or up to date.

What Monsanto doesn't tell consumers is that this supplementation of additional growth hormones is causing secondary sex characteristics to appear earlier in young children, especially girls. Monsanto also doesn't tell consumers that rBGH injected cows produce extremely high levels of Insulin Growth Factor -1 (IGH-1), a cancer promoter that occurs naturally in the human bloodstream at levels that generally do not result in tumors. Monsanto and the FDA refuse to acknowledge research directly linking elevated levels of IGF-1 to increased risk of breast and prostate cancer. To make matters worse, Monsanto and the FDA colluded in '93 and '94 to block labeling requirements for rBGH milk (even today Monsanto and the FDA block labeling of genetically engineered food). So, the average dairy consumer has no idea that they are increasing their own risk of getting cancer.

The US Government’s review of bisphenol A (BPA) is waste of money and perhaps even a ploy to delay making a decision on the chemical, a group of 33 scientific experts have said.

The scientists have sent a letter to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) criticising the decision to review its opinion on the controversial chemical, saying the safety of the substance has been exhaustively studied in more than 900 studies, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported this week.

They criticised an FDA move to spend a further $7m on more studies and cautioned that the research could be meaningless because the government had insisted on using rats that were resistant to BPA at low levels.

"The potential for fiscal waste, we believe, is magnified by our serious concerns that there are significant study design flaws in the (government's) research plans”, the letter added.

Despite the known risks associated with administering mercury/thimerosol-stabilized vaccines to pregnant women and children under the age of 3, health officials in Washington state have temporarily canceled the limit on how much mercury may be allowed in swine-flu vaccine given to pregnant women and to children up to the age of 3.
