Blackmon brings to light one of the most shameful chapters in American history—when a cynical new form of slavery was resurrected from the ashes of the Civil War and re-imposed on hundreds of thousands of African-Americans until the dawn of World War II.

Under laws enacted specifically to intimidate blacks, tens of thousands of African Americans were arbitrarily arrested, hit with outrageous fines, and charged for the costs of their own arrests. With no means to pay these ostensible “debts,” prisoners were sold as forced laborers to coal mines, lumber camps, brickyards, railroads, quarries and farm plantations.

Tags: neo-slavery

<clipSource>http://www.slaverybyanothername.com/index.php?section=13</clipSource>

Pentagon Institute: Iraq War "Major Debacle", Outcome "In Doubt"

clipped by: dulios

Clip Source: www.mcclatchydc.com

Pentagon institute calls Iraq war 'a major debacle' with outcome 'in doubt'

"Measured in blood and treasure, the war in Iraq has achieved the status of a major war and a major debacle," says the report's opening line.

"No one as yet has calculated the costs of long-term veterans' benefits or the total impact on service personnel and materiel," wrote Collins, who was involved in planning post-invasion humanitarian operations.

the United States has suffered serious political costs, with its standing in the world seriously diminished. The Troubled Homecoming Of The Marlboro Marine

This is the face of the war in Iraq. The mind behind it will never be the same.

On that day, as Miller paused for a smoke
during a lull in the fighting, a photographer from The Los
Angeles Times captured the battle-weary Marine with a
cigarette dangling from his mouth. Miller's face was smeared with
soot and sand and blood and war paint, none of which could
camouflage his bewilderment and exhaustion. The image was soon
plastered all over the news, appearing in more than 150
publications worldwide and earning him the moniker "Marlboro Man."

That was then. These days, Lance Cpl. James Blake Miller spends
much of his time sitting on the floor of the run-down trailer he
keeps as a residence behind his father's house in the tiny
coal-mining town of Jonancy, Kentucky (population 297).

He wishes someone had told

For starters, she is one of half a million people (roughly one-fourth of the total prison population) locked up on drug-related charges. Thomas is also an inmate in a state that locks up women at one of the highest per capita rates -- 129 per 100,000 residents, a figure that is right behind Texas, the federal system and California. Oklahoma’s imprisonment of women rose a stunning 1,237 percent from 1997 to 2004.

Tags: women, prison

<clipSource>http://www.alternet.org/reproductivejustice/76717/</clipSource>

Amnesty Criticizes Israel for Lebanon War

clipped by: dulios

Clip Source: news.bbc.co.uk

Israel war report 'deeply flawed'

Human rights organisation Amnesty International has condemned as "deeply flawed" an Israeli report on Israel's conduct in the war in Lebanon in 2006.

In the conflict that followed, more than 1,000 Lebanese died, mostly civilians, along with 160 Israelis, mostly soldiers.

Hostilities broke out in July 2006, when Hezbollah fighters captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross border raid that left three other soldiers dead.

Amnesty concludes its statement by calling upon Hezbollah to treat the captured humanely and stop using rockets against Israel civilians.

<clipSource>http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7220226.stm</clipSource>

Numb Troops to War with Drugs?

clipped by: dulios

Clip Source: www.alternet.org

Pentagon, Big Pharma: Drug Troops to Numb Them to Horrors of War

The DoD is flirting with the idea of medicating soldiers to desensitize them to combat trauma -- will an army of unfeeling monsters result?

In June, the Department of Defense Task Force on Mental Health acknowledged "daunting and growing" psychological problems among our troops: Nearly 40 percent of soldiers, a third of Marines and half of National Guard members are presenting with serious mental health issues. They also reported "fundamental weaknesses" in the U.S. military's approach to psychological health. That report was followed in August by the Army Suicide Event Report (ASER), which reported that 2006 saw the highest rate of military suicides in 26 years. And last month, CBS News reported that, based on its own extensive research, over 6,250 American veterans took their own lives in 2005 alone -- that works out to a little more than 17 suicides every day.

<clipSource>http://www.alternet.org/healthwellness/72956/?page=entire</clipSource>

151,000 Iraqi War Dead Says New Study

clipped by: dulios

Clip Source: news.bbc.co.uk

New study says 151,000 Iraqi dead

One of the biggest surveys so far of Iraqis who have died violently since the US-led invasion of 2003 has put the figure at about 151,000.

The US does not give estimates of civilian deaths, although President George W Bush once gave a figure of 30,000.

Tags: iraqi war dead

<clipSource>http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7180055.stm</clipSource>

The War on Black Men

clipped by: dulios

Clip Source: www.blackagendareport.com

Liberty City 7 Trial: A Foretaste of Things to Come

The U.S. government war against black people continues unabated despite an acquittal and mistrial in the case of the Liberty City 7. By doggedly insisting they will press for a new trial, the feds signal a determination to bring the bogus "war on terror" to the ghetto, whether they can assemble a credible case for guilt or not.

Tags: race, liberty city 7

<clipSource>http://www.blackagendareport.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=479&Itemid=1</clipSource>

Rice Stokes War in Africa

clipped by: dulios

Clip Source: www.blackagendareport.com

Condoleezza Stokes Flames of US Wars in Africa

Wednesday, 19 December 2007

by BAR executive editor Glen Ford

The U.S. military offensive in the Horn of Africa is poised to escalate, as Condoleezza Rice assures her African proxies of deepening collaboration in the “war on terror.” With at least half a million Somalis facing death by starvation and disease – and thousands more killed in resistance to the U.S.-backed Ethiopian occupation – Washington has set its sights on neighboring Eritrea as a rogue state that is guilty of “interference in the affairs of its neighbors” and “dangerous adventurism in the Horn.” The cookie-cutter U.S. propaganda/attack formula previously applied in the Persian Gulf has been imposed on Africa, and will surely reap the same catastrophic results.
