Just last month in a Times article by Jacques Steinberg, MSNBC president Phil Griffin declared Maddow "at the top" of a "very short list" for those who should have their own show, though at the time he said he "[didn't] know when" that would be. As Carter reports, the final stretch of the 2008 election season will be Maddow's debut as the host of her own MSNBC show:

The moves, which were confirmed by MSNBC executives Tuesday, are expected to be finalized by Wednesday, with Mr. Abrams's last program on Thursday. After MSNBC's extensive coverage of the two political conventions during the next two weeks, Ms. Maddow will begin her program on Sept. 8.

Tags: msnbc, rachel maddow, dan abrams, news, politics, 2008 election

<clipSource>http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/19/rachel-maddow-replacing-d_n_119929.html</clipSource>

White Fright

clipped by: dulios
clipper's remarks: I wonder how the right wing will be able to keep their attitudes about women and minorities under control. They are not fans of political correctness.

My hope is that when the racist and sexist attacks come, the American public will rise up in outrage, leading to real discussions about race and gender in this country.

Clip Source: www.salon.com

Over at National Review, Jonah Goldberg has a "theory" about what might help Obama win in the general election. After noting that Obama will be "the first serious mainstream black contender for the White House," Goldberg warns (emphasis added):

I seriously think certain segments of American political life will

unraveling actually aiding Obama enormously in 2008.

Tags: 2008 election, race-baiting

<clipSource>http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2008/01/05/obama/</clipSource>

The Return of the Swiftboaters

clipped by: dulios

Clip Source: www.alternet.org

The Return of the SwiftBoaters

The shadowy group that smeared John Kerry in 2004 is ready to do its dirty work again.

Tags: 2008 election, swiftboaters

<clipSource>http://www.alternet.org/election08/72696/?page=entire</clipSource>

The Right to Vote - Unless You're a Minority, Poor, or a Student

clipped by: dulios
clipper's remarks: Having worked on voter registration drives as a community organizer, I am familiar with many of these laws. From the birth of our country, where only white land-owning males had the vote, it has been a two-century fight to expand that franchise, and it ain't over yet.

Clip Source: www.alternet.org

GOP Already at Work to Keep Obama Voters From the Polls

GOP-backed election laws in many states pose barriers to Obama's supporters.

State legislatures, usually with Republican majorities, adopted the measures to
combat "voter fraud," or what the GOP has said is people impersonating other
voters for partisan benefit. What's notable about these laws is they affect an
entire state electorate, while the problems provoking their adoption almost
always concern a handful of individuals. That disparity has led many voting
rights advocates to say these laws are meant to discourage Democratic voters.

Tags: 2008 election, voting rights

<clipSource>http://www.alternet.org/story/72748/</clipSource>

President Michael Bloomberg?

clipped by: dulios
clipper's remarks: Bloomberg is just a richer version of Rudy Guiliana, not a "third way" candidate.

Clip Source: www.salon.com

Glenn Greenwald

Michael Bloomberg: Trans-partisan savior

Bloomberg is basically just Rudy Giuliani with a billion or two dollars to spend to alter the election.
