1) Thinking or saying, "We're just friends."

2) Thinking and daydreaming about the person more and more often

3) Looking forward to the next time you can see and/or talk to the person

4) Wanting to tell them first when something happens in your day

5) Sharing intimate emotions

6) Sharing intimate problems

7) You believe that this person understands you much more than your spouse

8) Keeping secrets and covering up

9) Giving gifts you would not normally give to a friend

10) Spending more and more time alone

I've heard so many people tell me that this was the one that pushed them over the edge.

Pity the poor fetus. There’s a lot coming its way. And now there’s talk on a conservative evangelical blog of a hypothetical hormone patch that an expectant mother might wear to eradicate her fetus’s natural gayness.

The patch, the biological determinism: It’s all conjecture, for now. But it hit like a theological IED when it turned up earlier this month on the blog of the Rev. R. Albert Mohler Jr., one of the leading voices of the 16 million-strong Southern Baptist Convention. He blogged on these issues under the appropriately provocative headline: “Is Your Baby Gay? What if You Could Know? What if You Could Do Something About It?” In his postings, he raises the possibility of a biological basis for homosexuality and prods his flock to think about how it should respond.

In an interview on Friday, Mohler said that Christian couples “should be open” to the prospect of changing the course of nature

If it were discovered that homosexuality had a biological basis, it would be morally acceptable for a mother to use a hormonal treatment patch to ensure her child was born heterosexual, Rev. Albert Mohler Jr., president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, suggested on his personal website.

“If a biological basis is found, and if a prenatal test is then developed, and if a successful treatment to reverse the sexual orientation to heterosexual is ever developed, we would support its use as we should unapologetically support the use of any appropriate means to avoid sexual temptation and the inevitable effects of sin,” wrote Mohler

But, in Mohler’s desire to root out homosexuality, he fails to consider an equally compelling question: If a biological or genetic basis for religious belief is discovered, would it also be morally acceptable to create a hormonal patch to eliminate fundamentalists, such as Mohler himself?

One of the core precepts of Reconstructionist thought is that Judaism is always evolving in response to times and circumstances–and thank God for that!

Homosexuality is one area where Judaism must change, as it has organically in so many other areas down the millennia. Certainly there are verses (two of them) in Torah that condemn homosexual behavior; but many of the standards of ancient Israelite society that we no longer would countenance are likewise enshrined in Torah. Slavery, stoning, vengeance killing–all of these practices are accepted or even promoted by the Torah. And yet we have no problem categorically rejecting them, saying that they no longer conform to a Jewish vision of a just and well-ordered society. Why should homosexuality be different?

Gay and lesbian couples deserve to be affirmed both civilly and religiously, acknowledging the couple’s legal rights and also the holiness that exists in nurturing and mutually supportive relationships.

Most Americans oppose gay marriage--polls generally suggest somewhere around 60 percent say they don't agree with extending marriage to homosexual couples. But most Americans-- to roughly the same extent--oppose amending the Constitution to make gay marriage impossible. A January ABCNew/Washington Post poll put it at 58 percent.

If they do not like the idea of gay marriage, why are so many Americans so resistant to amending the Constitution to prevent it?

One interpretation of the paradox is that opposition to gay marriage, while broadly shared, is not very deep.

According to our cultural logic on sexuality, an affair with a male prostitute is the singular clue to Haggard's orientation; everything else is a coverup. Why? Because of the assumption that when a straight man has gay sex, he must be gay. His orientation, once hidden, is now disclosed. And it is absolute. Call it Hidden Absolute Gayness.

This logic is a problem for both sides of the debate over people like Haggard, because it refuses to acknowledge the paradoxical nature of human experience. As the psychologist quoted in the Times and his colleagues know, humans can act in myriad and inconsistent ways. We can go astray from ourselves. We can experiment with things that we wouldn’t ordinarily consider a part of who we are. A husband who sleeps with another woman is not revealing his inner polygamist. A straight man who experiences gay sex is not necessarily revealing his inner homosexual.

Humankind is not divided into 'heterosexuals' and 'homosexuals.' Rather, we are 'sexuals,'

Eight rules for writing fiction:

1. Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.

2. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.

3. Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water.

4. Every sentence must do one of two things -- reveal character or advance the action.

5. Start as close to the end as possible.

6. Be a sadist. Now matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them -- in order that the reader may see what they are made of.

7. Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia.

8. Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as possible. To heck with suspense. Readers should have such complete understanding of what is going on, where and why, that they could finish the story themselves, should cockroaches eat the last few pages.

cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) can quiet activity in the circuit that underlies obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), just as drugs do.

When OCD patients were plagued by an obsessive thought, Schwartz instructed them to think, "My brain is generating another obsessive thought. Don't I know it is just some garbage thrown up by a faulty circuit?" After 10 weeks of mindfulness-based therapy, 12 out of 18 patients improved significantly. Before-and-after brain scans showed that activity in the orbital frontal cortex, the core of the OCD circuit, had fallen dramatically and in exactly the way that drugs effective against OCD affect the brain. Schwartz called it "self-directed neuroplasticity," concluding that "the mind can change the brain."

Psychologist disputes Dobson's Interpretation of Her Research

When academics feel that their work has been distorted in the press, they frequently have to settle for griping to colleagues or writing a letter to the editor. But for Carol Gilligan, a prominent psychologist and author of In a Different Voice, a mere letter did not suffice. When she was alerted that James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, referenced her work in a Time magazine column, she denounced his interpretation of her research — posting her views Monday in a video on YouTube.

“I was stunned to hear that James Dobson quoted me in Time magazine,” Gilligan says in the video. “I had no idea. I was mortified.” She says that there is nothing in her research that would lead anyone to agree with Dobson’s claim that same-gender families are unhealthy for children.

Ex-Gay Leader Would "Treat' Gay People Out Of Existence If Gay Gene Discovered

In a speech at University of California Santa Barbara this week, ex-gay leader Chad Thompson seemed to welcome the elimination of gay people if a gene that determined sexual orientation were discovered. This is quite ironic, considering Thompson wrote the book “Loving Homosexuals as Jesus Would.”

“I think it would be cool if a gay gene were discovered. Then God would get more glory when people are changed,” Thompson said.

“Sounds like Thompson would ‘love’ gay people right out of existence if he had his way,” said Truth Wins Out’s Executive Director Wayne Besen. “If this is how ex-gays love, I’d be afraid to see them when they hate.”

In the speech, Thompson also tried to sound loving when he said, “Christian media shows homosexuals as demons…gay media shows Christians as [hateful] people, and both of these lies create tension between the two sides.

The concept of gender identity is different from sexual orientation in that while sexual orientation revolves around whom one is attracted to romantically and physically, the issue of gender identity refers to a person’s internal sense of gender identity and how a person expresses this. And while the two phrases are often seen together, gender identity is an aspect of a person that is independent of the aspect of sexual orientation. Issues surrounding gender identity can affect all people, including those whom may be considered gender-variant, and most especially transgender people (hence the "T" in GLBT). Since transgender persons have, and express a gender identity that may not be considered appropriate for their assigned gender, many face the possibility of discrimination in employment, housing, and health care. Politically, gender identity issues include working for protective, non-discrimination legislation, as well as health care and insurance coverage for transgender people.
