Up to October 1901, the number of inmates in the 45 camps increased to 118 000 Whites and 43 000 non-Whites. The death rate was 344 per thousand amongst the Whites; at one stage in the Kroonstad camp the death rate was 878 per thousand.

Eventually 27,927 Boers died in the camps, of whom 4177 were adult women and 22,074 were children under the age of 16. Since the entire Boer population in both republics was just over 200,000, the mortality rate meant that just under 15 percent of the entire Boer population was wiped out. Such a figure is of genocidal proportions.

Twelve percent of Boer deaths were battle related; six percent died from other causes while on commando; 17 percent were adults in the camps and 65 percent were children under the age of 16 years.

Experts on amphibians have been caught on the hop by a rare batch of albino tadpoles living in a garden pond.

Tiny pale globules of frog spawn and tadpoles are now under observation at a secret and closely guarded address in Carmarthenshire, west Wales.

Experts from Froglife were called in after at least four separate blobs of albino spawn were found deposited in the pond.

They believe the "highly unusual" discovery could point to a significant frog population carrying the rare recessive gene for albinism.

No adult albino frogs have so far been discovered but their frog spawn and tadpoles have the characteristic pink eyes and off-white skin colour.

"Albino individuals of adult frogs, toads and newts have been reported in the past, though sightings are considered very rare," a spokesman said.

"Cases of multiple albinistic individuals in a breeding population are even rarer."

Located in the Jaua-Sarisariñama National Park in Venezuela are some of the biggest sinkholes in the world. The sinkholes are 350 meters wide and 350 meters deep and are a geological mystery. The huge vertical walls have created an isolated ecosystem, with completely unique species of both flora and fauna. They’re so isolated in fact, that the sinkholes were only discovered in 1974. The scientific expedition was documented in David Nott’s book “into the lost world.”

Lizard crawls out of mouth of a caught fish

The lizard began to struggle and with a little help from the fisherman it crawled from its captor's jaws. There were some teeth marks down its back and the tail was partially digested, but when they put it back on the river bank it happily scurried off.

"We witnessed the ultimate will to survive," Simson said. "The skink had probably slowed down its heart rate in order to stay alive for that length of time underwater without air."

An American angler on a fishing expedition in Australia made a fascinating catch: As he was taking pictures of his prize, the fish began to regurtitate a lizard, which moments later crawled out of the fish's mouth.

Visiting American angler John Berzins was fishing with guide Al Simson in the Doughboy River on the western side of northern Cape York this week when he hooked the fish.

While admiring the fish, it started regurgitating its last meal, which clearly should have been dead and looked dead with its lifeless eyes.

The small skink had been swallowed by the fish in a remote Cape York river and already was partially digested when the fish was caught by a fisherman. The saratoga is much-sought-after by sports fisherman because of its willingness to attack anything that moves and its fighting qualities.

"As I was looking through the lens of the camera I noticed that the once-glazed over eyes of the skink were now black," he said.

Happy tourists visiting the wildlife park in Japan might have thought they were treating the monkeys.

But they have left many of them so overweight they can hardly get around.

About 50 Macaca mulatta monkeys at Ohama park in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture have been left massively overweight after being overfed by tourists.

A local report in April said that about 30 per cent of the animals are so huge they struggle to get around their 420-square-meter enclosure.

Officials have been forced to put them on a strict diet.

A healthy Macaca mulatta monkey weighs in at about 20lbs, but one of these chunkies is over 4st.

The monkeys usually weigh around 20lbs, but one at the park is a whopping 4 1/2 stone

Winter the dolphin gets a prosthetic tail

Two years ago Winter was the dolphin that could not swim.

Instead of powering through the water with a flick of her tail, the bottlenose could barely waggle from side to side.

She had lost her tail in a crab trap at just two months old and was found floating in distress off the coast of Florida.

Winter survived but there was a problem … where her tail should have been there was only a stump.

Aquarium director David Yates said: "She had to learn how to swim without a tail, which no dolphin has ever done in captivity.

"We didn't know if she could do that. But vets feared her waggling might damage her spine.

Their solution was an artificial tail and Kevin Carroll, who has designed prosthetics for dogs, an ostrich, and even a duck, offered his services.

"Little did I know it was going to take a year and a half. He added: "With a person, when we fit a socket we have one long, solid bone. We don't have to have the socket moving in every direction.

Lost parrot tells veterinarian his address

TOKYO - When Yosuke the parrot flew out of his cage and got lost, he did exactly what he had been taught — recite his name and address to a stranger willing to help.

He kept mum with the cops, but began chatting after a few days with the vet.

"I'm Mr. Yosuke Nakamura," the bird told the veterinarian, according to Uemura. The parrot also provided his full home address, down to the street number, and even entertained the hospital staff by singing songs.

The Nakamura family told police they had been teaching the bird its name and address for about two years.

But Yosuke apparently wasn't keen on opening up to police officials.

"I tried to be friendly and talked to him, but he completely ignored me," Uemura said.

'Last wave' for wild golden frog

A BBC film crew has captured footage of a rare frog waving, wrestling and courting for the first time.

The Panamanian golden frog communicates with other frogs by semaphore in the form of gentle hand waves.

It has evolved the mechanism to signal to rivals and mates above the noise of mountain streams.

Shortly after filming for the BBC One series Life In Cold Blood, the frogs had to be rescued from the wild, due to the threat of chytrid fungus.

Hilary Jeffkins, senior producer of Life In Cold Blood, said the semaphoring behaviour of the Panamanian golden frog was very unusual.

"Normally, frogs would croak to get their message across but it's too noisy," she said. "An extra mechanism they've evolved is to wave to each other."

The population had all but disappeared because of a fungus that grows on the amphibians' skin and suffocates them.

The whole species is now extinct in Panama - this was one of the last remaining populations.
