Why do fakes get made? Why do people fall for hoaxes? Greed, pride, revenge, nationalism, pranks, and gullibility mix in an archaeological setting

There's no avoiding it--fakes are everywhere. Jane Walsh of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History says, "any museum--I don't care what museum it is--has fakes." While some hoaxes have humorous elements, this is a serious problem. Fakes pollute the archaeological record and skew our understanding of the past. The infamous Piltdown Man, which matched conceptions of what an early hominid should look like, misled scientists for decades. Crystal skulls were first faked in the later 19th century, when little was known about Mesoamerican religious practices. Today, they are still taken as real by many people. Biblical artifacts, faked or enhanced with inscriptions, play on peoples' religious beliefs.

Topping yet another bicycle list, Amsterdam is #1 here because of the great bicycle photos to follow along with the fact that 40% of traffic is bicycle traffic in Amsterdam and the city is full of bicycle facilities, including a 10,000-bicycle parking garage at its train station.

Amsterdam may not have as high a percentage of bicycle commuters as its Dutch neighbor to the north, Groningen, or as much bike-crazy counter-culture as Portland (Oregon), or the largest bicycle sharing program in the world like in Paris, or naked bicycle rides like in Barcelona and Portland, but compared to these and other world cities I think it is pretty well established now that it and Copenhagen are in a tight competition for the top position. Amsterdam tops this list because of the great photos to follow.

I really didn't want to write anything about the stolen climate scientist emails. Besides the fact that the personal accounts of scientists in the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia were illegally hacked, the supposedly incriminating quotes were taken well out of context, and, frankly, the actual content of the correspondences contains nothing to suggest that climate change isn't very real and a very immediate threat. The emails certainly don't change the fact that the scientific consensus on anthropogenic climate change remains strong.

Not that the scientific consensus seems to matter in this day and age of misinformation.

HAARP (The High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program that researches radio waves and is funded by the U.S. Government) has been targeted as a conspiracy organization again. Apparently this time HAARP caused global warming, which is more scientifically known as climate change.
Here is the theory:

Melting the polar ice caps with the use of HAARP is what's making "global warming" happen, so that the excuse to shift from gasoline to hydrogen and bio-fuels will happen along with desalinating ocean water and selling it back to the populace.

You'd think that somebody with a direct line to the Almighty, and tapped by Jesus to save mankind on Earth, would be able to come up with a better business plan for running a daily newspaper. But, alas, after nearly three decades of unrelenting financial losses, the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, a federal tax cheat, accused cult leader, and founder of the Unification Church, has decided to pull out. Actually, according to news reports, it's more like Moon's U.S. college-educated sons, as part of an internal family power struggle, have decided to finally cut off the endless stream of Asian church cash that's kept the Times afloat.

R.I.P. The Washington Times.

While the scientific community will have to validate The Center's findings, the model for assessing homeostatic relationships indicates the "trigger" behind autism is an imbalance between a pair of amino acid neurotransmitters; glutamate and glycine.

Autism was one of most difficult illnesses The Center had attempted to analyze. If it hadn't been for so many parents insisting that vaccines were responsible for the condition, we might never have found the fact that the stabilizer in MMR and a few other vaccines is hydrolyzed gelatin; a substance that is approximately 21% glycine. It appears that, based on readily verifiable science, the use of that form of glycine triggers an imbalance between the amino acid neurotransmitters responsible for the absorption rate of certain classes of cells throughout the body.

If the findings hold up, this could be the biggest conspiracy to ever hit the vaccine community. One that is verifiable by evidence.

Ancient Acropolis theatre to be restored

The Theatre of Dionysos in Athens will be rebuilt by extending and modernising surviving stone seats, although no new performances are planned to take place there.

Masterpieces of ancient drama by playwrights such as Euripides and Sophocles were performed at the open air theatre more than 2,500 years ago.

Dionysos, son of Zeus, was the Greek god of wine, madness and vegetation - not least the theatre - and was usually accompanied by a troop of female devotees and nymphs.

The theatre was last rebuilt in limestone and marble during the fourth century BC, when it frequently seated up to 15,000 spectators

It is hoped the multi-million pound project will be completed by 2015.

Architect Constantinos Boletis described the building, which stands on the southern side of the Acropolis Hill, as being "of immense historic significance".

"The programme will have a major impact on the overall aspect of the monument," said Mr Boletis.
