Questions about Romney's South Carolina abortion mailer

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (CNN) – Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's presidential campaign recently sent out a slick mail piece in South Carolina emphatically stating that Romney is "the only major presidential candidate who supports the Republican party's pro-life platform: A constitutional amendment banning abortion nationwide."

But the claim doesn't completely square with Romney's previous statements that the abortion issue should first be decided by state legislatures before a constitutional amendment can be passed, leading one conservative leader in the state to call parts of the Romney brochure "oversimplified" and "offensive."

Romney's claim in the mailer, obtained last week by CNN, also opened the door for three of his Republican opponents campaigning in South Carolina to hammer Romney on his past support for abortion rights.

Amnesty International defends access to abortion for women at risk

Amnesty International today firmly stood by the rights of women and girls to be free from threat, force or coercion as they exercise their sexual and reproductive rights.

"Amnesty International’s position is not for abortion as a right but for women’s human rights to be free of fear, threat and coercion as they manage all consequences of rape and other grave human rights violations," clarified Kate Gilmore.

Amnesty International encouraged the Catholic Church not to turn away from the suffering that women face because of sexual violence and urged the Catholic leadership to advocate tolerance and respect to freedom of expression for all human rights defenders, including Amnesty International, just as Amnesty International will continue to defend the freedom of religion.

Aug. 6, 2007 issue - Buried among prairie dogs and amateur animation shorts on YouTube is a curious little mini-documentary shot in front of an abortion clinic in Libertyville, Ill. The man behind the camera is asking demonstrators who want abortion criminalized what the penalty should be for a woman who has one nonetheless. You have rarely seen people look more gobsmacked. It's as though the guy has asked them to solve quadratic equations. Here are a range of responses: "I've never really thought about it." "I don't have an answer for that." "I don't know." "Just pray for them."

You have to hand it to the questioner; he struggles manfully. "Usually when things are illegal there's a penalty attached," he explains patiently. But he can't get a single person to be decisive about the crux of a matter they have been approaching with absolute certainty.

clipper's remarks: Having grown up in deep poverty, I promised my unborn children they would not be conceived until their lives were assured to be more economically secure. All my life, I have heard "pro-life" conservatives complain about me and people like me being alive and using welfare *as a child*. What do they want?

Abortion in Poland

A 35-year-old single mother in Warsaw, Poland, unsuccessfully sought an abortion in 2000 after three eye specialists advised her that her pregnancy could cause further vision impairment. Now, Aicja Tysiac, who has severe myopia, is permanently disabled after suffering a retinal hemorrhage following the birth of her third child. Even with special glasses she can see only five feet in front of her and she now relies on a mere 140 euros (about $180) a month in disability payments to raise her family.

Since then, anti-choice nongovernmental organizations and government officials have called for further constitutional “protection for unborn life.”

While Poland reported fewer than 200 “official” abortions last year, it is estimated that between 60,000 and 200,000 Polish women obtain abortions annually, either by paying for an illegal abortion in-country or traveling to a nearby country where abortion is legal.
