The Ten Habits of Emotionally Intelligent
    People
Copyright 1999 Steve Hein, The EQ Institute
    - May be copied for educational uses.

High EQ people:

1. Label their feelings, rather than labeling people or situations.

"I feel impatient." vs "This is ridiculous."

"I feel hurt and bitter". vs. "You are an insensitive
          jerk."

"I feel afraid." vs. "You are driving like a idiot."

2. Distinguish between thoughts and feelings.

Thoughts: I feel like...& I feel as if.... & I feel that

Feelings: I feel: (feeling word)

3. Take responsibility for their feelings.

"I feel jealous." vs. "You are making me jealous."

4. Use their feelings to help them make decisions.

"How will I feel if I do this?" "How will I feel if I
        don't"

5. Show respect for other people's feelings.

They ask "How will you feel if I do this?" "How will
        you feel if I don't."

6. Feel energized, not angry.

They use what others call "anger" to help them feel energized
        to take productive action.

7. Validate other people's feelings.

They show empathy, understanding, and acceptance of other people's feelings.

8. Practice getting a positive value from their negative emotions.

They ask themselves: "How do I feel?" and "What would
        help me feel better?"

They ask others "How do you feel?" and "What would help
          you feel better?"

9. Don't advise, command, control, criticize, judge or lecture to others.

They realize it doesn't feel good to be on the receiving end of such
        behavior, so they avoid it.

10. Avoid people who invalidate them, or don't respect their feelings.

As much as possible, they choose to associate only with other people
        with high EQ.

George Orwell has earned the right to be called one of the finer writers in the English language through such novels as 1984 and Animal Farm, such essays as “Shooting an Elephant,” and his memoir Down and Out in Paris.

George expressed a strong dislike of totalitarian governments in his work, but he was also passionate defender of good writing. Thus, you may want to hear some of George’s writing tips.*

A scrupulous writer, in every sentence that he writes, will ask himself at least four questions, thus:

What am I trying to say?

What words will express it?

What image or idiom will make it clearer?

Is this image fresh enough to have an effect?

And he will probably ask himself two more:

Could I put it more shortly?

Have I said anything that is avoidably ugly?

One can often be in doubt about the effect of a word or a phrase, and one needs rules that one can rely on when instinct fails. I think the following rules will cover most cases:

Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.

Never use a long word where a short one will do.

If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.

Never use the passive where you can use the active.

Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.

Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.

* From “Politics and the English Language” by George Orwell.

Poverty is forcing millions of Americans into a hunger crisis. Their hunger emergency is defined by food insecurity, which is the lack of access to sufficient, safe and
nutritious food to meet their dietary needs for an active and healthy life.2
Families find themselves buying cheaper and less nutritious food, or cutting entire meals out of their diet, just to make ends meet. Increasing over time, this pattern leads to
chronic malnutrition, affecting children and families in profoundly destructive ways.

One such possible cause is existential in nature, that is, a person ends up questioning his or her life, death or meaning of life, and by doing so, lapses into depression.

According to existentialism, a specific type of philosophy, humans are driven to meaning in their lives not by a specific type of deity or god, or by an outside authority, but internally, through our own choices, desires and pursuits. Humans are entirely free, and, therefore, entirely responsible for their own happiness or misery. It is up to each one of us to create the meaning which drives our life, whether it be through work, hobbies, charity, religion, relationships, offspring, family, or something else.

Existential depression may occur when a person comes face to face with these kinds of issues of life, death, freedom and the meaning of their life.

<clipSource>http://psychcentral.com/lib/2008/what-is-existential-depression/</clipSource>

A Conservative For Obama

clipped by: dmegivern
clipper's remarks: I saw this clipped earlier, but I didn't realize the gravity of the endorsement. Wow, a publisher of the National Review saying, "But I now see that Obama is almost the ideal candidate for this moment in American history. I disagree with him on many issues. But those don’t matter as much as what Obama offers, which is a deeply conservative view of the world. Nobody can read Obama’s books (which, it is worth noting, he wrote himself) or listen to him speak without realizing that this is a thoughtful, pragmatic, and prudent man. "

Clip Source: www.dmagazine.com

A Conservative for Obama

My senior thesis at the University of Texas was on the conservative intellectual revival in America. Twenty years later, I was invited by William F. Buckley Jr. to join the board of National Review. I later became its publisher.

But today it is so-called conservatives who are cemented to political programs when they clearly don’t work. The Bush tax cuts—a solution for which there was no real problem and which he refused to end even when the nation went to war—led to huge deficit spending and a $3 trillion growth in the federal debt. Facing this, John McCain pumps his “conservative” credentials by proposing even bigger tax cuts. Meanwhile, a movement that once fought for limited government has presided over the greatest growth of government in our history. That is not conservatism; it is profligacy using conservatism as a mask.

As a cause, conservatism may be dead.

I believe it is very much alive in the instincts and predispositions of a liberal named Barack Obama.

Tags: obama, mccain, conservative, liberal

<clipSource>http://www.dmagazine.com/ME2/dirmod.asp?nm=Core+Pages&type=gen&mod=Core+Pages&tier=3&gid=B33A5C6E2CF04C9596A3EF81822D9F8E</clipSource>

Possible Blood Test for Depression

clipped by: dmegivern

Clip Source: www.reuters.com

Protein discovery could lead to depression test

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Changes in the location of a single protein in the brain could be used to tell whether a person with depression is responding to an antidepressant within days of taking the drug, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday.

People with depression now must wait weeks before they learn whether the drug they are taking will bring relief.

But researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago have discovered that a single protein in the brain changes its location within a cell membrane when an antidepressant is working, and this change could be identified with a simple blood test.

In people with depression, this protein is trapped in what Rasenick called a "lipid raft" inside the cell membrane. Mental illness is just like a medical disease.

Many mental health experts believe in the “bio-psycho-social” model of mental disorders. That is, there are multiple, connected components of most people’s mental illness that include three distinct, yet connected, spheres: (1) the biological and our genetics; (2) the psychological and our personalities; and (3) the social and our environment. All three seem to play an important role in most people’s development of a mental disorder.

2.	Medications are the only treatment you need to treat a mental illness.

3.	If a medication or psychotherapy doesn’t work, that means your situation is hopeless.

4.	Therapists don’t care about you – they only pretend to care because you pay them.

5.	If it isn’t serious, it can’t hurt you.

Clip Source: psychcentral.com

6. New research points to significant modifications of an important gene that suggests depression may play a role in changing the very makeup of the brain.

Researchers at the Robarts Research Institute at The University of Western Ontario compared the brains of people who committed suicide with those who died suddenly of natural causes, such as a heart attack. They found that the genome in suicidal, depressed people was chemically modified by a process that is normally involved in regulating the essential characteristics of all cells in the body.

This is apparently the first study to show that proteins that modify DNA directly are more highly expressed in the brains of people who commit suicide. These proteins are involved in chemically modifying DNA in a process called epigenomic regulation.

The rate of methylation in the suicide brains was found to be much greater than that of the control group.

Tags: mental illness, genetics, epigenetics, depression

<clipSource>http://psychcentral.com/news/2008/07/31/can-depression-change-your-dna/2678.html</clipSource>
