One day after Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott sparked national controversy by referring to Democratic presidential candidate as Barack Hussein Obama, the federal government is investigating a complaint about his remark and members of the local ACLU and NAACP have called for an apology, saying Scott’s action was racist.

“Unless he changed his name, my position hasn’t changed,” Scott said. “It seems very clear to me that people have one of three stances on this thing: There are those who dislike it, there are those who like it, and there are those who think it’s a whole big deal about nothing, which is where I stand.”

James Muwakkil, founder of the 300-member Fort Myers Coalition for Justice and a life member of the NAACP and ACLU, called for a formal apology. He said that while he supports the sheriff’s right to speak his mind, he criticized him for doing so while in uniform. He felt it was an affront to all county residents who may not share the sheriff’s views.

Shreveport remains a bastion of American conservatism, raising questions about whether politics fuelled the aggression during the arrest of Brolin and Wright.

Shreveport police chief Henry Whitehorn has confirmed that police are reviewing audio and video of the incident and will submit the case to the city prosecutor's office for possible prosecution of the actors.

Louisiana police allegedly used taser and racial slur on W actors

A bar brawl that ended with two stars of Oliver Stone's new George Bush biopic, W, under arrest has taken a dark turn, with new reports charging that police used pepper spray and racial slurs on the Hollywood actors.

Josh Brolin, who plays the US president for Stone, and Jeffrey Wright, who portrays Colin Powell, were arrested in the small hours of Saturday morning outside a bar in Shreveport, Louisiana. The film has been shooting there for months.

Today John McCain was forced to stop the "hate speech" that Sarah Palin has be gleefully stirring up on his behalf.

There was glimmer of the old John McCain who many used to admire and respect.

This latest Campaign 2008 version is of someone who wants to win at all costs.

Or maybe not. What price Victory, John McCain?

McCain who bills himself as a "Man of Honour" must on some level be sickened and disgusted by the behaviour of some of his most vitriolic supporters.

This glimpse of the old John McCain was a man who could win an election with a true bi-partisan message and some good ideas to get the economy moving that would appeal to middle.

In light of the Bush 2000 vicious attack, it is hard to understand how McCain could condone a strategy where his campaign tried to label Barack Obama a dangerous unpatriotic "outsider" and a "terrorist" by association.

at a campaign rally he stopped one of his most vocal supporters from calling Obama an "Arab"-- maybe even he has had enough of the hate.

He acknowledges the "energy" people have been showing at rallies, and how glad he is that people are excited. But, he says, "I respect Sen. Obama and his accomplishments." People booed at the mention of his name. McCain, visibly angry, stopped them: "I want EVERYONE to be respectful, and lets make sure we are."

McCain told her there's a "difference between record and rhetoric, and I plan to talk about his record, respectfully... I don't mean that has to reduce your ferocity, I just mean it has to be respectful."

And then later, again, someone dangled a great big piece of low-hanging fruit in front of McCain: "I'm scared to bring up my child in a world where Barack Obama is president."

John McCain on Friday moved to calm rising anger among his supporters at rival Barack Obama, calling him a decent man and at one point taking the microphone away from a woman who'd called Obama an Arab.

Their anger apparently still at flash point, McCain's supporters then booed him for his conciliatory words about Obama.

Increasingly angry, supporters of McCain and running mate Sarah Palin have responded at rallies with loud cries of "terrorist" and "traitor."

But when one man said he was scared to raise his unborn child in a country that might be led by a President Obama, McCain disagreed.

Later, another supporter told McCain, "I don't trust Obama...He's an Arab."

McCain stood shaking his head as she spoke, then quickly took the microphone from her.

clipper's remarks: I don't know, some people's loyalty to the president reminds me of some people's loyalty to a king. Since the pres is not a king it sometimes boggles my mind. When they do discover he is a liar and how much he has lied and for what purposes, I wonder if they remember that day - kind of like remembering where you were when you learn that Kennedy was shot or where you were when 911 happened. If you had such an experience why not write about it. It's an interesting and informative read.

I remember when I realized George W. Bush was a liar. It was November 8, 2006—the day after the mid-term elections. It had taken me six years to admit the truth. NEWBERG, Ore. — Officials of a small Christian university say a life-size cardboard reproduction of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was hung from a tree on the campus, an act with racial undertones that outraged students and school leaders alike.

George Fox University President Robin Baker said a custodian discovered the effigy early Tuesday and removed it. University spokesman Rob Felton said Wednesday that the commercially produced reproduction had been suspended from the branch of a tree with fishing line around the neck.

The message read, ‘‘Act Six reject.’’

Obama is widely considered to be ahead in Oregon. In the run-up to the state’s May primary, he drew a crowd of about 75,000 people in Portland.

The National Rifle Association is endorsing Republican presidential nominee John McCain despite differences with the Arizona senator on gun-show rules and campaign finance restrictions.

The PAC was running an ad Thursday in USA Today accusing Obama of waffling on gun-rights issues and challenging his statements that he supports the right to bear arms. Obama has said he respects the Second Amendment but doesn't think it precludes "some commonsense gun laws so that we don't have kids being shot on the streets of cities like Chicago."

McCain's selection of Palin was a plus, LaPierre said.

"She's a hunter, she's a Second Amendment supporter and she's a tremendous asset to the ticket," he said.

No Gay marriage

Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Britany Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

A new study in the journal Analyses of Social Issues and Public Policy explored elementary-school-age children’s views about the role of race and gender in the U.S. presidency. Results indicated that most children are aware that women and people of color have been excluded from the presidency. Surprisingly, one in four children in the study stated that it was currently against the law for women, African Americans, or Latinos to be President. Many children also blamed those who have been excluded, arguing that they lack the necessary attributes to hold the position, including the fact women aren’t as smart as men.

QUANTICO, Va. -- One of the largest U.S. marine bases in the world is located in Quantico, a tidy town with scant election fanfare. Everyone who lives here just assumes Republicans have a lock on the military vote. And so when Obama signs began to appear, tongues began to wag.

"At first I was worried about how my neighbors would view it," said former marine corporal Dawn Jennings, 31, who bravely put an Obama sign in the center of her front yard. Jennings told OffTheBus that Quantico is the "kind of place where they'll ask you to remove an Obama bumper sticker from your car."

Barack Obama is promising to make college affordable for all Americans, and this appeals to Jennings. "I can't imagine telling my two kids, "No college for you, because I voted for McCain."

A Strategic Vision poll in Pennsylvania shows Obama leading McCain, 54 percent to 40 percent. A Muhlenburg poll in the same state puts Obama ahead 50 percent to 38 percent. These polls change Pollster.com's trend estimate in Pennsylvania from "lean Obama" to "strong Obama." A new Rasmussen poll shows Obama ahead in Wisconsin, 54 percent to 44 percent, and Minnesota, 52 percent to 45 percent. Wealthy Are Afraid They’ll Run Out of Money

It’s not just the middle class that has money worries. Even the affluent are worrying about running out of cash.

According to a new survey from American Express Publishing and the Harrison Group, nearly half of respondents with incomes of $250,000 or more agreed with the statement that “I worry that at some point I could run out of money.” That’s up from about a third in April.

Fully 69% agreed with the statement that “The recent real estate and banking crisis has affected my sense of financial security.”

Of course, $250,000 is only “Obama wealthy.” And running out of money “at some point” is a long time horizon. Yet the survey suggests that even high-income earners are cutting back their spending for fear of what the financial future might bring. Fully two-thirds say that they are “looking closely at every spending category to see where I can save.”
