Krugman wins Nobel for economics

American academic Paul Krugman has won this year's Nobel economics prize, it has been announced.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said the award recognised Mr Krugman's analysis of trade patterns and where economic activity takes place.

It said Mr Krugman, 55, a Princeton University professor, had formulated new theories that answered questions about free trade and globalisation.

Mr Krugman said he hoped the $1.4m win would not change his life greatly.

"The prize will enhance visibility," he told the Associated Press news agency, "but I hope it does not lead me into going to a lot of purely celebratory events, aside from the Nobel presentation itself."

Mr Krugman teaches economics and international affairs at Princeton University in New Jersey. He also writes a regular column for the New York Times.

The award is the last of six Nobel prizes announced this year. It is not one of the original Nobels, having been created in 1968 by the Swedish central bank in memory of Alfred Nobel.

1948 Truman-Dewey Election

The upset win of Harry Truman over Thomas E. Dewey in the 1948 election came after leading publications had confidently predicted Dewey's victory (e.g. New York Times headine: “Thomas E. Dewey’s Election as President is a Foregone Conclusion.”; Life Magazine: cover with Dewey's picture and caption reading, “The Next President of the United States"). Even on election night, the media still had difficulty accepting the fact that Truman could win.

Truman's 4.4 percentage point election margin contrasted with the pre-election polls predicting a Dewey victory ranging between 5 to 15 percentage points.

Ironically, the polls themselves may have helped Truman's late surge to overcome Dewey when press reports of their surveys showing Dewey ahead energized the Democrats to mount late efforts to increase turnout, and made the Republicans over-confident of any need to get their own voters to the polls.

His emotional gravitas is centered upon his African heritage, and his belief that the white man is responsible for global poverty and unequal sharing of wealth.

Particularly disturbing is his lengthy relationship with Bill Ayers, an unrepentant Weatherman radical who bombed government buildings and abdicated the overthrow of the United States.

Given the current global situation of nearly twelve thousand Muslim acts of terrorism since 911, it is disturbing to find his close associations with Muslim groups,

I have highlighted passages in both books and find one particularly disturbing: “Should the political winds shift in an ugly direction I will side with the Muslims.”

The candidate has surrounded himself with anti-American grievance mongers, and appears to manipulate “typical white people” by appealing to their guilt about slavery.

He is a socialist, and totally disenfranchised from the history of “root America.”

The Bush administration’s refusal to extend a helping hand to those punished by the economy it created is nothing new: Last month, the White House threatened to veto a second stimulus package over opposition to an expansion of food stamps benefits.

During today’s press briefing, White House press secretary Dana Perino suggested the Bush administration would oppose any effort to extend jobless benefits — a stance the White House has taken before. She explained their position by saying, “we want people to be able to return to the workplace as soon as possible.” The suggestion was that extending benefits somehow prevents people from returning to work.

She concluded by saying that “the best way to help” the economy and unemployed people is for unemployed people to simply “get back to work.” Watch it:

– The Department of Labor reported last week that the country shed 159,000 jobs in September, and the unemployment rate has increased to its highest level in five years.

– The Washington Post reported yesterday that “unemployment claims are at a seven-year high, and factory orders are sharply down. … Small businesses can’t get financing.”

Our enemies are not ﬁve thousand miles away, they are right here at home, and if we organize and ﬁght, we can stop this war, we can stop this government, and we can create a better world.

We were told we were ﬁghting terrorists; the real terrorist was me, and the real terrorism is this occupation. Racism within the military has long been an important tool to justify the destruction and occupation of another country. Without racism, soldiers would realize that they have more in common with the Iraqi people than they do with the billionaires who send us to war.

We never got any explanation for our orders. We were only told that a group of ﬁve or six houses was now property of the U.S. military, and we had to go in and make those families leave their houses.

One day after Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott sparked national controversy by referring to Democratic presidential candidate as Barack Hussein Obama, the federal government is investigating a complaint about his remark and members of the local ACLU and NAACP have called for an apology, saying Scott’s action was racist.

“Unless he changed his name, my position hasn’t changed,” Scott said. “It seems very clear to me that people have one of three stances on this thing: There are those who dislike it, there are those who like it, and there are those who think it’s a whole big deal about nothing, which is where I stand.”

James Muwakkil, founder of the 300-member Fort Myers Coalition for Justice and a life member of the NAACP and ACLU, called for a formal apology. He said that while he supports the sheriff’s right to speak his mind, he criticized him for doing so while in uniform. He felt it was an affront to all county residents who may not share the sheriff’s views.

Louisiana police allegedly used taser and racial slur on W actors

A bar brawl that ended with two stars of Oliver Stone's new George Bush biopic, W, under arrest has taken a dark turn, with new reports charging that police used pepper spray and racial slurs on the Hollywood actors.

Josh Brolin, who plays the US president for Stone, and Jeffrey Wright, who portrays Colin Powell, were arrested in the small hours of Saturday morning outside a bar in Shreveport, Louisiana. The film has been shooting there for months.

Today John McCain was forced to stop the "hate speech" that Sarah Palin has be gleefully stirring up on his behalf.

There was glimmer of the old John McCain who many used to admire and respect.

This latest Campaign 2008 version is of someone who wants to win at all costs.

Or maybe not. What price Victory, John McCain?

McCain who bills himself as a "Man of Honour" must on some level be sickened and disgusted by the behaviour of some of his most vitriolic supporters.

This glimpse of the old John McCain was a man who could win an election with a true bi-partisan message and some good ideas to get the economy moving that would appeal to middle.

In light of the Bush 2000 vicious attack, it is hard to understand how McCain could condone a strategy where his campaign tried to label Barack Obama a dangerous unpatriotic "outsider" and a "terrorist" by association.

at a campaign rally he stopped one of his most vocal supporters from calling Obama an "Arab"-- maybe even he has had enough of the hate.

Their anger apparently still at flash point, McCain's supporters then booed him for his conciliatory words about Obama.

Increasingly angry, supporters of McCain and running mate Sarah Palin have responded at rallies with loud cries of "terrorist" and "traitor."

But when one man said he was scared to raise his unborn child in a country that might be led by a President Obama, McCain disagreed.

Later, another supporter told McCain, "I don't trust Obama...He's an Arab."

McCain stood shaking his head as she spoke, then quickly took the microphone from her.

clipper's remarks: I don't know, some people's loyalty to the president reminds me of some people's loyalty to a king. Since the pres is not a king it sometimes boggles my mind. When they do discover he is a liar and how much he has lied and for what purposes, I wonder if they remember that day - kind of like remembering where you were when you learn that Kennedy was shot or where you were when 911 happened. If you had such an experience why not write about it. It's an interesting and informative read.
