Favre's brother, Scott, told the Biloxi, Miss. Sun Herald that the quarterback will retire. The newspaper also reported that Favre has told Packers coach Mike McCarthy that he won't play next season.

Favre's retirement comes on the heels of one of his finest seasons in which he led the young Packers to a 13-3 record and the NFC championship game, losing to the New York Giants in overtime.

Favre ends his career having started an NFL-record 253 consecutive regular-season games -- 275, counting playoff games -- and also ranks first in NFL history in touchdown passes (442), passing yards (61,655), completed passes (5,377) and attempted passes (8,758). He also played in 22 playoff games, including two this January. His biggest postseason win came after the 1996 season, leading the Packers to a 35-21 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 31.

The Price County Sheriff’s Department along with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is investigating a deadly hunting accident.

Emergency crews were called to a rural area near the Town of Kennan at about 12:10 pm Saturday.

Upon arrival they found a 26-year-old man had been shot by another hunter.

The victim was taken to the Rusk County Memorial Hospital in Ladysmith, where he was pronounced dead.

Right now, investigators say the shooting appears to be an accident and foul play is not suspected.

The name of the victim has not been released.

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Two teenage boys amassed a cache of guns, ammunition, bombs and other weapons at their homes and apparently planned to use them to attack their high school, authorities said Thursday.
The boys, both 17, were arrested Thursday morning at East High School, but their identities were not released pending possible charges, authorities said.
Police Chief Craig Van Schyndle said officers who found the materials also found suicide notes.
“From statements that we heard it gave us great concern that, yes, it was in the very near future something was going to take place,” he said.
The school resource officer also “learned these two students were obsessed with pain, death, and had suicidal thoughts,” Van Schyndle said.

A Merrill family is thankful after everyone walked away safely from a rollover crash Thursday. Cell 911 calls poured into the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department just before 7 p.m., reporting that an SUV pulling a camper trailer flipped over on US Hwy. 51 at the Prairie River bridge. Deputies and a Merrill Police Department officer responded to find that Derek J. Krzanowski, his wife and five children had just entered southbound US Hwy. 51 from County Road K when their travel trailer started to fishtail and flipped over and the SUV ended up on the guardrail. The trailer blocked one entire lane of traffic. Everyone was wearing seat belts or was in a booster or car seat, including two twin brother infants. Krzanowski and his wife had recently purchased booster seats for their two oldest children to comply with the new child seat law that went into effect June 1. Deputy Pete Annis, traffic safety coordinator, has nominated the family for an award from Wisconsin for being "saved by the belt" and "saved by the car seat." One of the children received a minor bump on the head, but if they had not all been properly belted, the injuries would have been much more severe, according to Annis.

158 people busted for drugs in nearby county

Some troubling arrests in a large drug bust in Wood County.

Sheriff Thomas Reichert says many of the people under arrest were selling drugs to high school students. The sheriff says even parents were selling drugs to their children's friends.

And, in one case, a couple involved a 15-year-old boy in drug sales.

Reichert expects 158 people will eventually be charged when deputies finish what's being called the largest drug bust in the county's history.

The Wood County Sheriff's Department, Central Wisconsin Drug Task Force and Marshfield Police Department has been working on the drug case for 15 months.

As expected, it was miserable outside yesterday. Sleet and snow fell in central Wisconsin and it even accumulated to the tune ot 2 to 3 inches in parts of the northwoods (especially Vilas county). A new record snowfall was set in Wausau. Three tenths of an inch was officially recorded. The old record for May 11th was just a trace set back in 1969. The wind was also a problem. High winds caused many power outages across the state. Even my house in town was without power for about 6 hours. Winds gusted up to 70 mph in parts of Marinette and Door counties. One man was seriously injured in Marinette county when a tree fell on him. Besides the icy precipitation temperatures hovered in the mid 30s most of the day. Definitely miserable. Today will be a little better, but not by much. High temps should reach the low 40s but the clouds and light rain will stick around. It should be warm enough that most of the precipitation falls as rain. The only chance of sleet will be early this morning as temps are still in the 30s. Tomorrow will be better than today, but not by much. There is still a chance of showers on Saturday and the skies will remain cloudy. So how will it be better? The high temperature should get up to 50. It is interesting how 50 doesn't sound too bad after such cold weather yesterday, however it is a far cry from normal high for this time of year, which is 67.

Blastomycosis outbreak prompts action

Mention blastomycosis in the Merrill area and you’re likely to hear many stories about this rare disease that’s less rare in Lincoln County than elsewhere. It seems everyone knows somebody who’s battled blastomycosis. A recent rash of reported cases, including one death, has prompted state and county health officials to take a closer look at the disease in this area.

Blastomycosis is caused by inhalation of spores from a fungus found in soil and rotting wood. In the woods, close to water, is the prime area for the fungus to exist. Riverbanks, ponds, beaver dams and bogs have been known to harbor the fungus. Merrill’s location at the convergence of two rivers provides a good environment for the fungus to grow.

While Archer is in Merrill, he will also be meeting with the medical community to discuss blastomycosis and the proper diagnosis of the disease. Symptoms can include cough, fever, chills, fatigue, skin lesions, and pneumonia. Blastomycosis can be life threatening if left undiagnosed or untreated.

The one death in the county that has been attributed to blastomycosis was just last month. Sixteen-year-old Tristan Muenchow of Merrill died Feb. 14, shortly after being diagnosed with the disease. According to her grandmother, Diana Huston, Tristan has been ill for about a week when she was diagnosed with pneumonia on a Sunday. As her condition worsened, the family took her to Marshfield Clinic in Merrill on Monday and she was airlifted to Marshfield that evening. She died early Tuesday morning.

Tristan’s father has also been diagnosed with the disease. In fact, he was in the hospital and unable to be with Tristan when she died, Huston said.

Man offers no apology for shootings in Wisconsin woods

HAYWARD, Wisconsin (AP) -- A Hmong immigrant convicted of murdering six deer hunters and attempting to kill others after a trespassing dispute was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday with no chance for parole.

Judge Norman Yackel ordered Chai Soua Vang, 37, to serve six life prison terms, one after the other, guaranteeing he would never be freed from prison. Wisconsin does not have a death penalty.

Yackel described Vang as a "time bomb ready to go off" at the slightest provocation.

"These crimes are not isolated acts, but a pattern of anti-social conduct," the judge said.

Vang, a truck driver from St. Paul, Minnesota, was convicted on six counts of first-degree intentional homicide and three counts of attempted homicide in the November 21 slayings.

The homicide charges carry a mandatory sentence of life in prison, but Yackel could have set a parole eligibility date for Vang. The judge also sentenced Vang to three concurrent terms of 40 years in prison on the attempted homicide charges.

The slayings occurred during the state's beloved deer hunting season and exposed racial tension between the predominantly white north woods residents and immigrants from the Hmong ethnic group.

Vang was convicted of killing Robert Crotteau, his son Joey Crotteau, Denny Drew, Allan Laski, Jessica Willers and Mark Roidt. All were relatives and friends who gathered to hunt from the Crotteaus' cabin near Exeland.

(CNN) -- Sheriff's deputies are investigating the killings of five hunters Sunday in northwest Wisconsin -- bloodshed apparently sparked by a dispute over a hunting spot. A suspect has been arrested.

"This is completely nuts," said Chief Deputy Tim Zeigle of the Sawyer County Sheriff's Department. "Why? I mean, five people dead because somebody was trespassing on property. It makes no sense."

"Apparently, the person was asked to leave and get out of his deer stand, and he didn't take it very well and he fired away at them," she said.

The dead included a a teenage boy and a woman, and a father and son, Zeigle told AP. Some of the victims were shot more than once.
