Turns out, a number of physical therapists around the country are actually allowing patients to relearn balance and movement skills by playing the Wii, which as you know, it already quite the hit with the geriatric set. Furthermore, injured soldiers in Landstuhl, Germany are also "regaining their strength by playing virtual games on the Wii," and there's even suggestions out to conduct a research study that looks at the effectiveness of using Nintendo's latest console as a rehab tool. We know that Nintendo's Wii has been a massive hit with families, but we've also noticed a growing trend with the physically-interactive game system that is honestly a bit of a surprise -- apparently, senior citizens can't put their Wiimotes down. Similar to stories we've seen before, the UK's gossip rag The Sun is reporting that seniors at the Sunrise Home in Birmingham, UK, have taken to the console like super-old fish to water. The pensioners at the institution have been engaging in knock-down, drag-out contests in Wii Sports -- playing tennis, boxing, and bowling with a cut-throat competitiveness not seen since the Dark Ages. Barrie Edgar, 88, one of the home's residents said, "It's great fun. We've only had it a few days but we can't put it down." Mr. Edgar then glanced at Tilda Montgomery, another Sunrise Home occupant and exclaimed, "Prepare to be pwned, you old bird."

Tags: senior citizens, nintendo, wii, gaming, technology

<clipSource>http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/14/nintendos-wii-continues-to-be-a-smash-with-seniors/</clipSource>

Wii Party Station...hmmmmm

clipped by: djkraz
clipper's remarks: though this looks pretty cool and the charge station is needed, the rest may be a little, ok a lot, over the top....

Clip Source: www.engadget.com

The allure of playing with Nyko's Wiimote charging station / party bowl hybrid was just too strong for the folks at Joystiq to resist, and hey, we can't say we blame 'em. As the crew put it through the typical paces, they found that the cooling, charging, and organizing functions all worked perfectly as advertised, but even they couldn't deny that it essentially redefined superfluous. It took them a while, but Nintendo is finally busting out its Wii Zapper accessory for housing the Wiimote and Nunchaku in a FPS-friendly shell. It'll be out this year, shipping for free with a "far along" unannounced title from Nintendo, and selling stand alone at retail for $20. At a private developers conference this week, Nintendo announced the introduction of WiiWare™, a game-creation service that will allow developers large and small to create new downloadable video game content for sale by Nintendo through the Wii Shop Channel of the hot Wii™ home video game system. WiiWare paves the way for smaller, more creative games to make their way to the public at lower prices, without any inventory risk to developers. The first WiiWare content will launch in early 2008.

Tags: wii, nintendo, technology

<clipSource>http://press.nintendo.com/articles.jsp?id=12571</clipSource>

Wii pool cue for your Wiimote

clipped by: djkraz
clipper's remarks: Not bad for $13. While we continue to wait for Nintendo to go official with its "Zapper Style" shell for the Wiimote, enterprising hackers have some Far Cry Vengeance to smack down, and AcidMod's "cyberpyrot" is doing it old school. The hack is about as simple as they come, he merely rewired the Wiimote's IR sensor to the front of his NES Zapper, and hooked up the trigger to the Wiimote's trigger button. He plans to strap the Wiimote to his wrist, for easy access weapon changes, and while the mod is lacking in elegance, cyberpyrot claims his FPS performance has "vastly improved." Alright Nintendo, your turn. That's one great way to alleviate all the broken tvs and windows.
