It's amazing how fast technology moves these days. It was less than a year ago that I was looking at a rear projection DLP HDTV because they were the only way to get a good HDTV for not a lot of money. Now LCD's are so cheap it's almost pointless to buy a DLP.

Clip Source: www.pcmag.com

LAS VEGAS - One HDTV trend that I could not overlook at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show was the near absence of rear-projection televisions on the main show floor. Why? Because they're basically dead.

Among all high-definition television technologies, the rear-projection TV (RPTV) continues to offer the best overall value for the biggest HD screen sizes. However, if the 2008 retail predictions hold true, the already steady decline of RPTV retail sales will plummet by more than 50 percent by year's end.

Sony's recent announcement that it will discontinue its entire RPTV line in order to focus its manufacturing efforts exclusively on OLED (organic light emitting diode) and LCD flat panel display technologies was but one sign that the tide was quickly turning for this once popular TV technology.

<clipSource>http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2704,2247456,00.asp</clipSource>

Amiga head says new AmigaOS 5 "better than OS X"

clipped by: djkraz
clipper's remarks: I too was shocked to hear they were still trying to become a "player". Sure, we know you and your Video Toaster have been gutted over this whole AmigaOS 4 debacle... what's that? You've never heard of OS 4? You didn't know Amiga was still around? You hadn't heard that Bill McEwan, CEO of Amiga says the company's next OS is going to be "better than OS X?" Well time to perk up those ears, kiddo. In a truly enthralling read, the head of the <STRIKE>defunct</STRIKE> hardware-maker / software company says that Amiga is hard at work on a number of projects, not the least of which is the follow up to company's OS 4 -- which has been mired in development disputes with a company called Hyperion Entertainment since 2001 -- AmigaOS 5. A piece of software guaranteed to surprise and thrill the technology community at large, mostly (we suspect) due to the fact that no one even knew the company was still in business. Sure, some of the detractors say they haven't released a product in seven years, but what's seven years when you've got that pile of platinum that is OS 5? Exactly.

Tags: amiga, technology, os x, apple, mac

<clipSource>http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/06/ce-oh-no-he-didnt-part-xlv-amiga-head-says-new-amigaos-5-bet/</clipSource>

Solar powered mouse?

clipped by: djkraz
clipper's remarks: I know I'd save the landfill quite a few battery's with one of these!

Clip Source: www.therawfeed.com

Delft University of Technology is testing a SOLAR-POWERED MOUSE, what they say is the world's first powered exclusively by light. Just as expected, Nissan has indeed rolled out a concept vehicle that showcases its long-awaited anti-drunk driving technology. The vehicle sports "multiple preventative features" designed to curb inebriated operation of vehicles, and essentially detects the driver's state of sobriety and kicks into action if you've had a bit much. Amongst the detection agents are alcohol odor sensors built into the locking shift knob, seat-mounted sensors that can activate a voice and navigation screen warning, and a facial monitoring system that determines your "state of consciousness through your eyes." Regrettably, there's still no word as to when this system could actually hit showroom floors, but if the automaker has shelled out enough dough to craft a concept vehicle, we'd imagine it's not too far out.

Tags: drunk driving, technology, automobile, nissan

<clipSource>http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/03/nissan-unveils-concept-car-with-anti-drunk-driving-technology/</clipSource>

Volkswagen working on adaptive sunshade

clipped by: djkraz
clipper's remarks: This would save me many headaches, literally... I hate sunglasses and I often get headaches from driving without them due to the sun.

Clip Source: www.engadget.com

Just a day after a clever Jetta owner figured out how to chart his joyrides with a Wiimote, it looks like Volkswagen has a trick up its own sleeve, too. Reportedly, the automaker is developing an "adaptive sun visor" that recognizes the position of the sun and darkens the areas that require it in order to make your drive a less squint-filled one. The technology supposedly works around curves and elevation changes, meaning that leaving your sunglasses behind may not ruin your afternoon commute. As expected, further details are few and far between at the moment, and while there's no set date (nor vehicle) for the innovative sunshade to be launched on, the sun-lovin' Eos wouldn't be a bad guinea pig.

Tags: automobile, technology, sun

<clipSource>http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/03/volkswagen-conjuring-up-adaptive-sunshade/</clipSource>

Neural controlled robot hands working 95% of the time

clipped by: djkraz
clipper's remarks: Amazing!

Clip Source: www.engadget.com

It looks like robot hands have taken yet another step into human-like territory, with a team of researchers at John's Hopkins University recently demonstrating a new neural interface that allows an artificial hand to be used to play the piano. But that's not all! In true mad scientist fashion, to actually control the hand, the researchers relied on neural activity recorded from a monkey's brain. According to MIT's Technology Review, that resulted in the fingers on the hand performing their intended movement about 95 percent of the time. While the system doesn't currently work in real time, the researchers are reportedly planning a live demonstration with a monkey within the next six months. Apparently foreseeing a potential monkey-machine rampage, however, the researchers have wisely decided to only let the monkey control a virtual version of a prosthetic arm.

Tags: technology

<clipSource>http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/26/researchers-show-off-robot-hand-neural-interface/</clipSource>

PS3 Sales rank up 2,500% on Amazon after $100 price drop

clipped by: djkraz
clipper's remarks: Still needs to come down quite a bit before I'd consider buying it...

Clip Source: www.amazon.com

PlayStation 3 (60GB)
High definition video streaming over power jacks? We say bring it Sharp, if you can. Meet the HN-VA40S pair, a HomePlug AV 1.1 PowerLine Computing (PLC) solution with the promise of an effective 85Mbps (200Mbps theoretical) across your home's electrical outlets -- ample bandwidth and QoS to stream HD video throughout the home. The ¥17,000 (about $137) HN-VA10 adapter feeds whatever data you bung down its Ethernet jack to the 4-port, ¥13,000 (about $105) HN-VA40 Ethernet hub plugged into any outlet up to 150-meters away. Better yet, save a few bills and buy the set for about ¥24,000 (about $194) when these ship August 24th in Japan. Don't be shy now; you can connect up to 16 units to the same network although we'd suggest waiting for a review before dropping that much dough.

Tags: technology

<clipSource>http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/25/sharps-hn-va40s-homeplug-av-4-port-ethernet-hub-hd-streaming-o/</clipSource>

The first terabyte hard drive get's great performance reviews

clipped by: djkraz
clipper's remarks: Not only does it have great performance, but the price isn't bad at $399.

Clip Source: www.extremetech.com

Let's take a look at the first terabyte hard drive, the Deskstar 7K1000 from Hitachi Global Storage, and see just how it performs. For an impressive $399 ($0.39/gig), is it worth your bucks?

Clip Source: www.extremetech.com

Hitachi is the first to market with a 1TB hard drive, using the company's perpendicular recording technology. The technology is similar to Seagate's 750GB 7200.10. Perpendicular recording orients the tiny magnetic domains vertically, with one orientation representing binary zeros and the opposite representing binary 1's.

Even so, Hitachi needs five platters and ten heads to hit 1TB. Having that many heads can have an impact on issues like noise and power draw. For example, the 750GB version of the drive is rated at 30dB while seeking; the 1TB sibling generates 32dB.

We're pretty impressed with the overall performance of the Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000. However, as we pack more data onto these compact digital devices, the thought of losing that data is a bit daunting.

Tags: technology, hard drive, computers

<clipSource>http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2131552,00.asp</clipSource>

"Spray-On" computing unveiled by Scottish scientists

clipped by: djkraz
clipper's remarks:
We are seeing this kind of technology in the Nintendo Wii and this is a very, very primitive form of what we will be demonstrating on Friday.
As a huge fan of the Wii, I can only dream of the day that you spray on your controller. Some parents try to beat this issue by purchasing shoes that are a size too big. INCHworm shoes has come up with a solution to this conundrum by using iFit technology.

The iFit technology allows you to GROW the size of the shoe with a simple push of the button. So eliminate unnecessary trips to the shoe store and provide your children with better fitting shoes that last up to three sizes longer. Inchworm shoes grow in half size increments. Just push the button on the side, and pull the toe of the shoe to adjust into the next size.
