NEW ORLEANS - A week after Hurricane Katrina, the levee break that caused much of the area’s flooding was repaired, floodwaters began to recede and the mayor made his direst prediction yet: there may be as many as 10,000 deaths in his city alone.

State officials said late Monday afternoon that the repeated helicopter droppings of 3,000-pound sandbags into the football-field-wide break in the 17th Street canal leading to Lake Ponchartrain succeeded in stopping the water, and water was being pumped from the canal back into the lake. Some parts of the city showed slipping floodwaters as the repair neared completion, with some low-lying areas dropping more more than a foot.

“We’re starting to make the kind of progress that I kind of expected earlier,” New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said even before the plug of the break, which opened up a day after the hurricane and flooded 80 percent of the city up to 20 feet deep.

Strain begins to show in New Orleans area as gunmen fire on contractors

METAIRIE, La. - One week after Hurricane Katrina turned the region into a disaster of biblical proportions, miles-long lines of vehicles crawled into Jefferson Parish on Monday as residents were allowed to return for brief inspections of what’s left of their homes.

The traffic began moving into the parish at about 6 a.m., and officials planned to allow traffic in for 12 hours, though they encouraged residents to inspect their property, pick up personal items and leave.

The suburban New Orleans parish, which has about 500,000 residents, has been closed since a mandatory evacuation just before Katrina hit. Wide portions of Metairie and Kenner suffered heavy flooding, and authorities said thousands of homes were damaged.

Parish President Aaron Broussard warned the 460,000 residents that they would find all traffic signals destroyed, no open stores and a dusk-to-dawn curfew. He recommended that women not come alone.

'We’re making great progress'
A week after the storm, a definitive death toll remained elusive. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin warned on NBC’s “Today” that “it wouldn’t be unreasonable to have 10,000” dead.

Chaotic recovery
On Sunday, as authorities struggled to keep order across New Orleans, gunmen opened fire on a group of contractors on a bridge, rescues of stranded residents continued and the flood waters began to recede, leaving the grisly task of collecting bodies.

The death toll across the Gulf Coast was not known. But bodies were everywhere: floating in canals, slumped in wheelchairs, abandoned on highways and medians and hidden in attics.

“I think it’s evident it’s in the thousands,” Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt said Sunday on CNN, echoing predictions by city and state officials last week.

Local newspaper reports 10 wounded, several critically

OPELOUSAS, La. - One Hurricane Katrina refugee died and many others were injured when a bus carrying them west from the Superdome in New Orleans overturned and rolled across a highway median.

The Daily World of Opelousas reported on its Web site that at least 10 people were taken to hospitals, several of them critically injured.

Trooper Willie Williams, spokesman for the state police, said the driver lost control of the vehicle. More details were not immediately known.

The bus was heading north when it overturned on Interstate 49; it wound up on the southbound off-ramp to the town's main street.

WAVELAND, Mississippi (AP) -- Hurricane Katrina seemed to take a particular vengeance out on Waveland, Mississippi.

The storm virtually took out Waveland, prompting state officials to say it took a harder hit from the wind and water than any other town along the coast.

The air smelled of natural gas, lumber and rotting flesh. (See the video of corpse recovery efforts in Mississippi -- 3:28)

"Total devastation. There's nothing left," said Brian Mollere, a resident who was left cut and bruised. Katrina tore his clothes off and he had to dig in the debris for shorts and a T-shirt.

Fourteen members of Waveland's police department survived the storm by hanging on desperately to a spindly bush. (Full story)

The town of 7,000 about 35 miles east of New Orleans has been partially cut off because the U.S. 90 bridge over the Bay of St. Louis was destroyed.

There is no power, no phones, no way out -- and nowhere to go. (See the video report of National Guard relief efforts in Mississippi -- 1:18)

He recalled swimming out of the store with the dog as the water rose and finding shelter in a house that survived. "If it had been night, I would have drowned," he said.

His 80-year-old mother did drown in the storm. She had evacuated with some family to a grocery store in neighboring Bay St. Louis.

As her family members swam away to escape the storm, his mother, who used an oxygen tank, stayed behind.

Mollere's father was a local folk hero for being one of the few people to stay behind in Waveland during Hurricane Camille in 1969. The elder Mollere swam along and grabbed onto a white horse, and both were saved.

Convoys bring relief to New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- On the day President Bush visited this devastated city, thousands of tired and angry people stranded at the convention center welcomed National Guard troops and trucks carrying food, water and medicine with cheers and tears of joy.

"It's amazing. They've come in full force," she said.

Honore said getting food and water to the people at the convention center was difficult. "If you ever have 20,000 people come to supper, you know what I'm talking about," the general said. "If it was easy, it would have been done already."

"A few moments ago, he stopped a truck full of National Guard troops ... and said, 'Point your weapons down, this is not Iraq,' " Starr reported.

Nagin said in a statement that more than 10,000 people had been evacuated from the city Thursday but that more than 50,000 survivors were still on rooftops and in shelters, in urgent need of help.

AUTOGRAPH SESSION AND BLOOD DRIVE TO TAKE PLACE AT BAY PARK SQUARE

The Green Bay Packers and the American Red Cross are teaming up to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina with an autograph session and blood drive at Bay Park Square Mall Sunday.

The autograph session will take place from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at center court and the blood drive will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the ShopKo wing of the mall.

More than a dozen players, including Bubba Franks, Aaron Kampman, Robert Ferguson, Najeh Davenport and Aaron Rodgers, are expected to take part.

The players will be seated at tables, with three players at each location. Donations to each table are encouraged in exchange for autographs of the players seated at the respective tables.

The goal is to raise a substantial amount of money and supporters are asked to give what they can.

Supporters of the cause who are unable to attend Sunday's signing are encouraged to give financial support either via telephone at 800-HELP-NOW or online at www.redcross.org.

Bay Park Square Mall is located at the corner of Oneida Street and Pilgrim Way in Ashwaubenon, Wis.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, here before the hurricane hit, says the feds are "feeding people a line of bull."

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- As his city skidded deeper into chaos, New Orleans' embattled mayor accused federal officials of dragging their feet while people are dying in deplorable conditions.

Mayor Ray Nagin's voice cracked with anger and anguish Thursday night in an interview with New Orleans radio station WWL.

"We're getting reports and calls that [are] breaking my heart from people saying, 'I've been in my attic. I can't take it anymore. The water is up to my neck. I don't think I can hold out.' And that's happening as we speak."

"You mean to tell me that a place where you probably have thousands of people that have died and thousands more that are dying every day, that we can't figure out a way to authorize the resources that we need? Come on man," he said.

"I've talked directly with the president," he said. "I've talked to the head of the homeland security. I've talked to everybody under the sun."

Insisting that aid is coming as fast as possible, Chertoff said, "You can't fly helicopters in a hurricane. You can't drive trucks in a hurricane."

"Get off your asses and let's do something."

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush, facing blistering criticism for his administration's response to Hurricane Katrina, said Friday "the results are not acceptable" and pledged to bolster relief efforts with a personal trip to the Gulf Coast.

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- President Bush told reporters on Friday that millions of tons of food and water are on the way to the people stranded in the wake of Hurricane Katrina -- but he said the results of the relief effort "are not acceptable."

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin lashed out at state and federal authorities saying they were "thinking small" in the face of the massive crisis.

So far, he said, the promises are unfulfilled.

"I keep hearing that it's coming. This is coming. That is coming. My answer to that is B.S. Where is the beef?"

"They're feeding the people a line of bull, and they are spinning and people are dying," he said. (Full story)

"We've got small children and sick and elderly people dying every day, small children being raped and killed, people running around with guns -- I'm scared for my life, my wife and my 5-year-old daughter's life. We don't even want to live here anymore."

Federal Emergency Management Director Michael Brown told CNN that federal officials were unaware of the crowds at the convention center until Thursday, despite the fact that city officials had been telling people for days to gather there.

ROUNDUP Hundreds feared dead after hurricane Katrina as looting escalates

NEW ORLEANS (AFX) - Rescuers raced to reach stranded survivors of Hurricane Katrina overnight as authorities battled to stop looters taking control of the stricken city of New Orleans.

But as night fell, police chased looters across the darkenened streets amid mounting pillaging of stores, carjackings and armed robberies.

One nurse told how helicopters evacuating patients from a local hospital had been fired upon. There were also reports of men armed with automatic rifles opening fire in a police station.
