AP Story: Packers Top Lions 16-13 In Overtime

Samkon Gado's first passing attempt was ugly.

Other than that, Green Bay's rookie running back played a starring role in the Packers' 16-13 overtime victory against the Detroit Lions.

Gado rushed for 171 yards and a touchdown, allowing Brett Favre to play the steady, more conservative game he had been promising for weeks but hadn't yet delivered.

The grounds crew received a little help on Friday morning from Lynn West, a Hudson, Wis., native.

During Fan Fest in March, West's silent auction bid awarded her the chance to paint the letters in the Lambeau Field end zones.

"That's the most amazing feeling," said West, dressed in a No. 36 LeRoy Butler jersey and Packers hat, as she painted the "B" in Bay.

Her husband, friend and parents took turns painting. Her parents journeyed up from Cape Coral, Fla.

The giddy troop took turns rubbing footballs into the yellow lettering. Lynn's brother made sure to spray his Brett Favre jersey. Lynn wore new, white shoes on Friday to soak up all the yellow.

"I want that on everything that goes home with me," she said.

According to Fields Manager Allen Johnson, the Packers had never allowed a fan to paint the end zones before.

The West family and friends painted neatly, staying within the lines of the lettering. But Johnson is not worried about losing his day job to Friday's guests.

"No," he said with a smile. "I'm really not."

New Orleans mayor hails ‘great progress’; residents re-enter flooded parish

NEW ORLEANS - A week after Hurricane Katrina, the levee break that caused much of the area’s flooding was repaired, floodwaters began to recede and the mayor made his direst prediction yet: there may be as many as 10,000 deaths in his city alone.

State officials said late Monday afternoon that the repeated helicopter droppings of 3,000-pound sandbags into the football-field-wide break in the 17th Street canal leading to Lake Ponchartrain succeeded in stopping the water, and water was being pumped from the canal back into the lake. Some parts of the city showed slipping floodwaters as the repair neared completion, with some low-lying areas dropping more more than a foot.

“We’re starting to make the kind of progress that I kind of expected earlier,” New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said even before the plug of the break, which opened up a day after the hurricane and flooded 80 percent of the city up to 20 feet deep.

AUTOGRAPH SESSION AND BLOOD DRIVE TO TAKE PLACE AT BAY PARK SQUARE

The Green Bay Packers and the American Red Cross are teaming up to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina with an autograph session and blood drive at Bay Park Square Mall Sunday.

The autograph session will take place from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at center court and the blood drive will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the ShopKo wing of the mall.

More than a dozen players, including Bubba Franks, Aaron Kampman, Robert Ferguson, Najeh Davenport and Aaron Rodgers, are expected to take part.

The players will be seated at tables, with three players at each location. Donations to each table are encouraged in exchange for autographs of the players seated at the respective tables.

The goal is to raise a substantial amount of money and supporters are asked to give what they can.

Supporters of the cause who are unable to attend Sunday's signing are encouraged to give financial support either via telephone at 800-HELP-NOW or online at www.redcross.org.

Bay Park Square Mall is located at the corner of Oneida Street and Pilgrim Way in Ashwaubenon, Wis.

The Green Bay Packers Wednesday re-signed Pro Bowl tight end Bubba Franks to a multi-year contract. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, announced the signing.

"We are very pleased to reach an agreement with Bubba Franks, and to know that he will be with the Packers for years to come,” Thompson said. “He has been a great player for our team the past five years, and we look forward to an exciting future for Bubba and the Green Bay Packers. He’s a leader both on and off the field, in addition to being an excellent representative of this organization.”

Franks, a 6-foot-6, 265-pound veteran from Miami (Fla.), could become the first tight end in Packers history named to four Pro Bowls. Paul Coffman (1982-84) and Mark Chmura (1995, 1997-98) are the only other Packers at the position who have played in three.

A durable, consistent offensive threat, Franks has not missed a game in five NFL seasons, playing in 80 straight contests (86 including playoffs). What’s more, including an All-America college career with the Hurricanes, he has played in 122 consecutive contests.

Since the Packers made Franks their first-round selection in the 2000 draft (14th overall), only Tony Gonzalez (39) has more touchdown receptions than Franks (28) among league tight ends. And, with 25 TD catches from Brett Favre, only Antonio Freeman (57), Sterling Sharpe (41) and Robert Brooks (32) have caught more from the future Hall of Famer.

Key in the Packers’ rushing success over the last two years, Franks also has worked diligently to become one of the NFC’s top blocking tight ends.

In five years, Franks has 188 receptions for 1,729 yards and 28 touchdowns. In Packers history, which spans 84 NFL seasons, those 188 catches rank tied for 20th overall, and tied for third among franchise tight ends.
