clipper's remarks: I knew this guy and he was truly a great guy. He's been going to school to be a doctor because as he said, doctors saved his life when he was just a couple years old. The worst part is that he just got married. A very sad day here in Wisconsin.

The Price County Sheriff’s Department along with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is investigating a deadly hunting accident.

Emergency crews were called to a rural area near the Town of Kennan at about 12:10 pm Saturday.

Upon arrival they found a 26-year-old man had been shot by another hunter.

The victim was taken to the Rusk County Memorial Hospital in Ladysmith, where he was pronounced dead.

Right now, investigators say the shooting appears to be an accident and foul play is not suspected.

The name of the victim has not been released.

Some troubling arrests in a large drug bust in Wood County.

Sheriff Thomas Reichert says many of the people under arrest were selling drugs to high school students. The sheriff says even parents were selling drugs to their children's friends.

And, in one case, a couple involved a 15-year-old boy in drug sales.

Reichert expects 158 people will eventually be charged when deputies finish what's being called the largest drug bust in the county's history.

The Wood County Sheriff's Department, Central Wisconsin Drug Task Force and Marshfield Police Department has been working on the drug case for 15 months.

As expected, it was miserable outside yesterday. Sleet and snow fell in central Wisconsin and it even accumulated to the tune ot 2 to 3 inches in parts of the northwoods (especially Vilas county). A new record snowfall was set in Wausau. Three tenths of an inch was officially recorded. The old record for May 11th was just a trace set back in 1969. The wind was also a problem. High winds caused many power outages across the state. Even my house in town was without power for about 6 hours. Winds gusted up to 70 mph in parts of Marinette and Door counties. One man was seriously injured in Marinette county when a tree fell on him. Besides the icy precipitation temperatures hovered in the mid 30s most of the day. Definitely miserable. Today will be a little better, but not by much. High temps should reach the low 40s but the clouds and light rain will stick around. It should be warm enough that most of the precipitation falls as rain. The only chance of sleet will be early this morning as temps are still in the 30s. Tomorrow will be better than today, but not by much. There is still a chance of showers on Saturday and the skies will remain cloudy. So how will it be better? The high temperature should get up to 50. It is interesting how 50 doesn't sound too bad after such cold weather yesterday, however it is a far cry from normal high for this time of year, which is 67.

Mention blastomycosis in the Merrill area and you’re likely to hear many stories about this rare disease that’s less rare in Lincoln County than elsewhere. It seems everyone knows somebody who’s battled blastomycosis. A recent rash of reported cases, including one death, has prompted state and county health officials to take a closer look at the disease in this area.

Blastomycosis is caused by inhalation of spores from a fungus found in soil and rotting wood. In the woods, close to water, is the prime area for the fungus to exist. Riverbanks, ponds, beaver dams and bogs have been known to harbor the fungus. Merrill’s location at the convergence of two rivers provides a good environment for the fungus to grow.

While Archer is in Merrill, he will also be meeting with the medical community to discuss blastomycosis and the proper diagnosis of the disease. Symptoms can include cough, fever, chills, fatigue, skin lesions, and pneumonia. Blastomycosis can be life threatening if left undiagnosed or untreated.

The one death in the county that has been attributed to blastomycosis was just last month. Sixteen-year-old Tristan Muenchow of Merrill died Feb. 14, shortly after being diagnosed with the disease. According to her grandmother, Diana Huston, Tristan has been ill for about a week when she was diagnosed with pneumonia on a Sunday. As her condition worsened, the family took her to Marshfield Clinic in Merrill on Monday and she was airlifted to Marshfield that evening. She died early Tuesday morning.

Tristan’s father has also been diagnosed with the disease. In fact, he was in the hospital and unable to be with Tristan when she died, Huston said.

Man offers no apology for shootings in Wisconsin woods

HAYWARD, Wisconsin (AP) -- A Hmong immigrant convicted of murdering six deer hunters and attempting to kill others after a trespassing dispute was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday with no chance for parole.

Judge Norman Yackel ordered Chai Soua Vang, 37, to serve six life prison terms, one after the other, guaranteeing he would never be freed from prison. Wisconsin does not have a death penalty.

Yackel described Vang as a "time bomb ready to go off" at the slightest provocation.

"These crimes are not isolated acts, but a pattern of anti-social conduct," the judge said.

Vang, a truck driver from St. Paul, Minnesota, was convicted on six counts of first-degree intentional homicide and three counts of attempted homicide in the November 21 slayings.

The homicide charges carry a mandatory sentence of life in prison, but Yackel could have set a parole eligibility date for Vang. The judge also sentenced Vang to three concurrent terms of 40 years in prison on the attempted homicide charges.

The slayings occurred during the state's beloved deer hunting season and exposed racial tension between the predominantly white north woods residents and immigrants from the Hmong ethnic group.

Vang was convicted of killing Robert Crotteau, his son Joey Crotteau, Denny Drew, Allan Laski, Jessica Willers and Mark Roidt. All were relatives and friends who gathered to hunt from the Crotteaus' cabin near Exeland.

(CNN) -- Sheriff's deputies are investigating the killings of five hunters Sunday in northwest Wisconsin -- bloodshed apparently sparked by a dispute over a hunting spot. A suspect has been arrested.

"This is completely nuts," said Chief Deputy Tim Zeigle of the Sawyer County Sheriff's Department. "Why? I mean, five people dead because somebody was trespassing on property. It makes no sense."

"Apparently, the person was asked to leave and get out of his deer stand, and he didn't take it very well and he fired away at them," she said.

The dead included a a teenage boy and a woman, and a father and son, Zeigle told AP. Some of the victims were shot more than once.

Record Number of Drunk Drivers Arrested

More than 43,000 people were booked for drunk driving last year in Wisconsin. That's a record 10% jump from 2003. Police say they're able to track down more drunk drivers, now that more people are using their cell phones to report them.
"In many cases, they will follow the suspect vehicle if you will and keep the dispatch center updated on their location," says Lincoln County Sheriff, Tom Koth.
Koth says the combination of people calling and officer training has helped them stop more drunk drivers.

They may be closing the grade school I went to

clipper's remarks: This really sucks. There was a great aura around these schools. It was almost like a family. Most of my teachers were also the teachers of my parents and other family members. Anybody that went to that school could probably walk in there today and be recognized by 90% of the staff.

Now with these consolidated schools and overcrowding of students, the teachers spend all there time controlling all the extra students instead of teaching them.

MERRILL - As school leaders and residents here consider the implications of closing two elementary schools to cut costs, they are treading in well-charted territory.

Merrill Area Public School administrators have presented a plan to the School Board that would close the district's two smallest elementary schools, Scott and Midway. The move would save the district $210,000 to $290,000 per building, said Superintendent Sally Sarnstrom. She estimates that about $600,000 will have to be cut from the district's 2006-07 budget.

But "we're aware that it's a challenge that many of our districts from all over the state are facing," said John Ashley, executive director of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards. "It's really a matter of what's best for the kids. We really say, it's up to the local community to figure out what's best for the community."

"The kids are having to make new friends," he said, and his children now have to travel 10 miles instead of three to go to school.

"It's sad for the community. It's tough for the community," Erdahl said. "These buildings have been open for decades."

Tough choices
Erdahl said Rhinelander district leaders already made budget cuts before closing the schools, but "the bigger savings by far is (by) concentrating more teachers in fewer sites. You gain efficiencies in student-to-staff ratios."
Erdahl said regret hangs in the air over the situation. "We just had to face reality," he said.

If the School Board decides to keep the schools open, the district will have to cut costs in other ways, including eliminating educational programs, Sarnstrom said.

Rising gas prices are putting many of us in a budget crunch and they're also hurting cities and counties in our area.

Speich says they should be able to handle the fuel prices through 2006, but after that, unless fuel prices drop, either more money will need to come in or major projects will have to be cut.

Boys and girls don't mix, at least when it comes to gym class.

"The hormones are raging and all of a sudden you're telling them to be in little shorts or t-shirts with each other, or they have to take swimming with each other. It's not cool," said Elliot.

This discussion might be all for nothing. Elliot says because of Title 9 regulations, schools are forced to have mixed gym classes.

DOZENS OF HOMES AND BUILDINGS WERE DESTROYED AROUND MCFARLAND AND STAUGHTON.

UNTIL LATE IN THE EVENING, RESCUERS WORKERS KEPT SEARCHING IN THE RUBBLE FOR SURVIVORS.
