Origin of Deja Vu Pinpointed

The brain cranks out memories near its center, in a looped wishbone of tissue called the hippocampus. But a new study suggests only a small chunk of it, called the dentate gyrus, is responsible for “episodic” memories—information that allows us to tell similar places and situations apart.

The finding helps explain where déjà vu originates in the brain, and why it happens more frequently with increasing age and with brain-disease patients

Like a computer logging its programs’ activities, the dentate gyrus notes a situation’s pattern—it’s visual, audio, smell, time and other cues for the body’s future reference. So what happens when its abilities are jammed?

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush, seeking to rev up support for his energy plan, praised domestic automakers Monday for building more "flexible fuel" vehicles capable of running on ethanol and biodiesel blends.

"That's a major technological breakthrough for the country," Bush said. "If you want to reduce gasoline usage like I believe we need to do so for national security reasons as well as for environmental concerns, the consumer has got to be in a position to make a rational choice."

Introduction

There's a lot of debate on the net. Unfortunately, much of it is of very low quality. The aim of this document is to explain the basics of logical reasoning, and hopefully improve the overall quality of debate.

The Concise Oxford English Dictionary defines logic as "the science of reasoning, proof, thinking, or inference." Logic will let you analyze an argument or a piece of reasoning, and work out whether it is likely to be correct or not. You don't need to know logic to argue, of course; but if you know even a little, you'll find it easier to spot invalid arguments.

There are many kinds of logic, such as fuzzy logic and constructive logic; they have different rules, and different strengths and weaknesses. This document discusses simple Boolean logic, because it's commonplace and relatively easy to understand. When people talk about something being 'logical', they usually mean the type of logic described here.

Japan helps build Vietnam's first ethanol plant - cassava feedstock

The Vietnamese Petroleum Services and Tourism Company (Petrosetco) and Japan's Itochu Co-operation will set up a joint venture to build a bio-ethanol plant, the first of its kind in Vietnam. The two partners signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the issue in Ho Chi Minh City on March 9.

The €76.2/US$100 million project will turn out 100 million litres (26.4 million gallons) of ethanol each year, from cassava chips, which will be sold in Vietnam to mix in petrol used in industrial production and transport activities.

The mixing of ethanol in petrol will help the country reduce its petrol imports as well as cut environmental pollution, said Tran Cong Tao, Petrosetco's chief of executive.

It is estimated that if a 10 percent ethanol ratio is introduced in the country's largest city, Ho Chi Minh City, some 100 to 150 million liters will be needed per year. This amount can be covered by the single plant.

Winksite (www.winksite.com) is more than just a moblog service-it lets you create up to five sites that can be easily viewed on a mobile phone. You can trick out your site with “channels” including a blog (either one hosted on Winksite or a feed of your existing blog), RSS feeds, surveys, a guestbook, even a forum or a chat room.

So I am looking for other products that allow you to publish to the web from your mobile device… like Glue... and not finding much. There seems to be a lot of hype about publishing existing sites on mobile, but very few people allowing the mobile device user to publish to existing sites. I find this weird, as mobile is a logical extension of the Internet, and increasingly should not be thought of as a separate entity. Maybe because people don’t realize what is possible from a mobile phone. I dunno. The technology is here… we are doing it with Glue every day.

Bush embarks on ethanol diplomacy to rebuff Chavez

"It's a trip to demonstrate that it retains good relationships, particularly with Brazil and Mexico, that it's committed to Colombia, and that it's not worried about left-wing governments."

In Sao Paulo, officials say Bush and Lula will launch a biofuels initiative aimed at helping Brazil export its ethanol technology to the region. Washington hopes it will help the United States reduce its dependence on Middle Eastern and Venezuelan oil.

Brazil is a biofuels pioneer. All gasoline here is blended with ethanol made from sugar cane and over 80 percent of new cars are flex-fuel, which run on gasoline or ethanol.

Lula will follow up Bush's visit with a trip to Washington on March 31, prompting some Brazil watchers to say it appears the two countries are growing closer.
