With the ever-increasing gas prices, one may think there could hardly be any good news related to it. However, as climbing gas prices continue, there does appear to be one positive outcome; Lower traffic fatalities.

Columbus, Ohio (AP) "Rising prices at the gas pump appear to be having at least one positive effect: Traffic deaths around the country are plummeting, just as they did during the Arab oil embargo three decades ago."

"Researchers with the National Safety Council report a 9 percent drop in motor vehicle deaths overall through May compared with the first five months of 2007, including a drop of 18 percent in March and 14 percent in April."

"Preliminary figures obtained by The Associated Press show that some states have reported declines of 20 percent or more. Thirty-one states have seen declines of at least 10 percent, and eight states have reported an increase, according to the council."

Not far from Jena, La., suspicions rise of a cover-up mount

WINNFIELD, La. - At 1:28 p.m. last Jan. 17, Baron "Scooter" Pikes was a healthy 21-year-old man. By 2:07 p.m., he was dead.

What happened in the 39 minutes in between--during which Pikes was handcuffed by local police and shocked nine times with a Taser device, while reportedly pleading for mercy--is now spawning fears of a political cover-up in this backwoods Louisiana lumber town infamous for backroom dealings.

Calcium May Be Your Secret Weapon in Successful Weight-Loss Diet

Studies* have shown that including dairy calcium in your diet increases weight loss, sometimes dramatically. It also reduces body fat percentage. Dieters who cannot digest lactose may still benefit by including other forms of calcium in their diet or use supplementation, although with less spectacular results.

Calcium is found in salmon, sardines, broccoli, cabbage, asparagus, figs, almonds, dark leafy vegetables -- and of course dairy products. However, if you are dairy intolerant, drinking milk will produce allergic reactions that increase mucus, which make it difficult to lose weight. Dieters may still be able to eat low lactose foods like hard cheeses or cottage cheese.

Adults need roughly 800-1500 mg of calcium per day. We would be hard pressed to consume as much as our Stone Age forebears -- 2000-3000 mg per day (Heaney and Barger-Lux, 1994).

Blind Woman Tasered by Dayton Police

Thursday, July 17th 2008, Dayton Ohio Police arrived at the home of 49 year old Denise Harris, looking for her son, a robbery suspect. A blind woman, Denise Harris of a Fernwood Avenue apartment opened the door to the police and told them that her son was not there. This is when the accounting splits into two different versions..

As well as being blind, Harris also suffers from diabetes and cancer. Sgt. Charles Anderson said that although the incident is under investigation, Harris will be charged with assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. And because neighbors and relatives are outraged at her treatment, claiming it was excessive and unnecessary police force being used on a scared blind woman, Sgt. Anderson said that not only was her opening the door a voluntary act but that she should have told the officers she was scared.

"Women would watch their contraceptive coverage disappear overnight," said Clinton.

The planned rule is aimed at countering recent state laws enacted to ensure that women can get contraception when they want or need it. It also would help protect the rights of medical providers to refuse to offer contraception.

She also urged people to sign a petition on her website, www.hillpac.com, against the proposed changes.

"If enacted, these rules will make birth control out of reach for some women. That's a sure way to guarantee more unintended pregnancies and more abortions," said Anne Davis of Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health.

McDonald's image of their Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Biscuit confirms my suspicion that bacon, indeed, is supposed to come on the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Biscuit. It also confirms that my biscuits should not look like the next image.

You do not see any bacon on that biscuit do you?

Where's the Bacon?

I have one strong theory as to what is happening to my bacon. You probably think it's just an unfortunate coincidence that two times in a row I would visit McDonald's and receive a baconless bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit right? Wrong. As far as me and food go, if there is going to be a karmic convergence regarding food, it will be with me!

After motorist Mark Holder, 30, had a seizure in Boynton Beach, Fla., in June, his car swerved off the road and smashed into a sign, badly injuring him. Emergency workers arrived and, protecting against possible nerve damage, attempted to put a brace on to stabilize his neck. However, Holder became combative, and sheriff's deputies reported that they were forced to shoot Holder "several times" with a Taser to calm him enough that the brace could be fitted. Long Beach Man Sentenced to 26 yrs for Murder when A Stolen Stove Fell from his Truck

Cole Allen Wilkins, 32, of Long Beach California has been sentenced to 26 years to life in prison for a murder charge that was a freak accident. David Piquette, a 10-year veteran of the Los Angeles county Sheriff's Department was killed due to a crash he sustained after a stolen stove fell from the back of Wilkins' truck.

Wilkins' attorney, Joseph Vodney, argued at trial that the case against his client was highly unfair, as well as the murder charge being highly excessive because Wilkins did not intend to harm Piquette. "This is an excessive sentence in the sense he shouldn't have been convicted of felony murder."

Medical Expert Says Practice Is Troubling

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- While the Metro police had banned the use of Tasers for a time, they still used a controversial method to subdue unruly people, according to an I-Team report.

For almost two years, Metro police have had the option of calling for a needle loaded with a strong sedative to control the most unruly people they encounter on the street.

One of the doctors who came up with the protocol said it's the safest option out there and that it is used all over the country.

But many people said that the injection was news to them, and a top medical ethicist said it's a troubling precedent.

The drug is called Midazolam, which is better known as Versed.

"The drug has an amnesia effect, and we use that therapeutically because one of the nice ways to take care of the discomfort is to make people forget that they've had it," said biomedical ethics and law enforcement expert Dr. Steven Miles.

From the CBC article, "Ban Tasers if RCMP doesn't curb use by year's end: Commons committee,"A parliamentary committee is threatening to call for a moratorium on the use of stun guns if the RCMP doesn't begin restricting use of the weapons by the end of the year.

I think it would be helpful for the United States to employ a similar commission against the police as a whole. Too often I think police corruption and malfeasance go unheard due to local law enforcement threatening negative consequences.

For the United States to have a general and federal oversight for police where complaints could safely be lodged without fear of repercussions - even anonymously - could go a long way in keeping the finger on the pulse of true public safety. Let it be a Public Advocate Committee against Police Abuse.

Investigators say Deputy Carlos Tanner had been drinking Sunday evening when he got into a fight with his wife. Tanner, 38, allegedly pushed her onto the bed and Tasered her three or four times, leaving Taser burns on her stomach.

Tasered man dies in police custody in Simcoe

SIMCOE, Ont.–Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is probing the death of a 36-year-old man who died after being Tasered in a confrontation with provincial police officers.

Officers were responding to a call about a man causing a disturbance in Norfolk County yesterday morning. Police described the man as "combative."

A Taser was used to subdue him before officers took him to the Simcoe provincial police station, the SIU said in a release last night.

The man collapsed at the station and officers administered first aid until an ambulance arrived, police said. He died at Norfolk General Hospital.

The incident occurred just days after the RCMP announced it would restrict Taser firings.

A recent report on RCMP Taser use revealed that nearly a third of the people hit with Tasers needed medical treatment after.

Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski died last October after he was Tasered by RCMP at Vancouver International Airport.
