Cake may be the answer to kids' egg allergy

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - To desensitize young children to their allergy to eggs, physicians from Greece say "let them eat cake."

Heat modifies certain egg allergens and, in turn, allows some children with egg allergies to be "treated" by feeding them ever increasing amounts of egg baked in a cake, Dr. George N. Konstantinou and colleagues, at the University of Athens report.

The investigators' treated children 12 to 48 months old. Thirty-nine had skin prick test sensitivity to hen's eggs and 55 had been diagnosed with hen's egg allergy after eating egg. Most of the children also had atopic eczema, a chronic scaly or itchy skin rash.

Over 6 months, just 7 of the children still had itching, eczema, or more severe reactions to the baked egg challenge.

The investigators then gave a whole egg to the 87 children who did not react to baked eggs and only 4 reacted with itching or eczema.

FDA limits salmonella warning to Mexican peppers

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Only Mexican-grown raw jalapeños and raw serrano peppers have been linked to the salmonella outbreak, a spokesman for the Food and Drug Administration said Friday.

According to AP reports, Sanchez said the FDA "has no scientific proof to make a decision that will harm Mexico enormously."

The latest development came just days after the FDA announced it discovered salmonella on a jalapeño imported from Mexico at The Agricola Zarigosa produce distribution center in McAllen, Texas.

Peppers grown in the United States have not been connected to the outbreak that has sickened more than 1,000 people since April, said FDA spokesman Michael Herndon.

Initially, tomatoes seemed the most likely source of the outbreak. The FDA told consumers to avoid certain raw tomatoes on June 7, prompting grocery chains and some restaurants nationwide to stop offering them.

'Sesame Street' designer, Kermit Love, dies at 91

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York (AP) -- Kermit Love, the costume designer who helped puppeteer Jim Henson create Big Bird and other "Sesame Street" characters, has died. He was 91.

In addition to his work with Henson, Love was a designer for some of ballet's most prominent choreographers, including Twyla Tharp, Agnes de Mille, Jerome Robbins and George Balanchine.

"Sesame Street," public television's groundbreaking effort to use TV to teach preschoolers, premiered in 1969. Henson designed the original sketches of Big Bird, and Love then built the 8-foot, 2-inch yellow-feathered costume.

Love also helped design costumes and puppets for Mr. Snuffleupagus, Oscar the Grouch and Cookie Monster, among other characters. He even appeared on the show himself as Willy, the fantasy neighborhood's resident hot dog vendor.

But Love always insisted Henson's famous frog wasn't named for him, according to The New York Times.

High fuel prices put brakes on indie band tours

Cramming into a rusty, creaky van and playing dive bars and house parties is a summer ritual for many young musicians and ambitious independent bands trying to get exposure, make a living and maybe build a solid future in music.

But like everything else that requires lengthy time on the road, filling up at $4 a gallon or more is taking a toll.

On the grass-roots level, cost has always been a concern for touring bands. But the nearly $2,500 in gas Garcia and his two bandmates would have had to pay just to make it to Vancouver, Canada, and back was too much to overcome.

"There's no way we can sustain a blow that big," he said, adding that the band is lucky to break even on a tour, even when gas prices are more moderate.

Disney to offer free movies online

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Disney will stream full-length movies on its Web site for the first time, as part of its "Wonderful World of Disney" series on ABC. The films are scheduled to stream through August.

"Finding Nemo" is available at www.Disney.com/WWoD (http://www.Disney.com/WWoD) through Friday, after the film's airing Saturday on Disney-owned ABC. "Monsters, Inc.," "Haunted Mansion," "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen," "Princess Diaries 2," "Freaky Friday" and "Peter Pan" also will be available on the site this summer.

A Disney spokesman said the decision to stream movies for free marks an "evolution" in the company's online strategy. Fox, Universal, Lionsgate and MGM have all previously placed titles on Hulu, the NBC Universal/News Corp.-owned site, while Disney has gone the pay route and kept its films, for the most part, on iTunes.

As a producer more interested in atmospheric sensibilities than technical perfection, Daniel Lanois has masterminded career-defining albums for U2, Bob Dylan and Peter Gabriel, often reinventing their sound by adding layers of mystery and depth. Recorded with jazz drummer Brian Blade and pianist Garth Hudson, Lanois' sixth studio album is an eclectic mix of richly textured rock songs, mellow vibes and hypnotic instrumentals, interspersed with snippets from philosophical conversations with mentor Brian Eno. Ghostly fuzz guitars hover over the title track, and the haunting "Where Will I Be," previously recorded by Emmylou Harris, reveals a soulful songwriter. Coldplay Reveals Album Title, Release Date

Coldplay's fourth album, "Viva la Vida," will arrive June 17 in North America via Capitol and a day earlier internationally, according to the band's spokesperson.

"Viva la Vida" was produced by the band with Brian Eno and Markus Dravs. Coldplay manager Dave Holmes previously told Billboard.com the album "definitely takes them in some different directions. I'm not a music critic, but it's certainly a progression, with some really great songwriting."

The band is finalizing the track list today (March 19), according to its Web site. "Viva la Vida" is the follow-up to 2005's "X&Y," which topped The Billboard 200.

Billy Crystal to don Yankees pinstripes

TAMPA, Fla. - Billy Crystal will get to "look mahvelous" in pinstripes. The actor will sign a one-day, minor league contract with the New York Yankees and play in Thursday's exhibition game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Crystal, an avid Yankees fan, will work out with the team on Wednesday and will wear uniform No. 60 for the game — to be played one day before his 60th birthday. The Yankees said Monday they have the approval of baseball commissioner Bud Selig.

"I've been waiting 50 years for this call," Crystal said in a statement released by the team. "I'm overwhelmed by the generosity of the Yankees and commissioner Selig. I know this'll be tougher than the Broadway Softball League, but I'm looking forward to helping the younger players, which by the way is all of them. Oops, I have to go, Scott Boras is on the phone."

Maxim apologizes for Black Crowes review

NEW YORK - Maxim magazine has apologized for publishing a negative review of the Black Crowes' new album by a writer who hadn't listened to the whole CD.

The review in Maxim's March issue gives the Crowes' "Warpaint" a rating of two-and-a-half stars out of five. The band posted an exasperated statement on its Web site last week saying the Maxim writer hadn't heard the entire album because advance copies weren't available. The Crowes' manager, Pete Angelus, said the magazine explained that its review was an "educated guess."

Maxim editorial director James Kaminsky responded Tuesday with this statement: "It is Maxim's editorial policy to assign star ratings only to those albums that have been heard in their entirety. Unfortunately, that policy was not followed in the March 2008 issue of our magazine and we apologize to our readers."

I think he has a very condescending attitude which often made me feel like he was mocking the event. However, i had to include the last line in this clip-- i thought it was hysterical...but i do miss the Billy Crystal days.. he made the night feel like it was special.

Review: Stewart saves sluggish Oscars

Stewart, back for a second turn as host, was vastly improved from his 2006 appearance. He proved equal to the challenge posed by Oscarcast's quick turnaround. His crash-deadline material worked. And even when it didn't, he was genial, relaxed, and seemed utterly at home. His manner suggested that, before the show even started, the hard part was over: settling the strike.

"Even `Norbit' got a nomination, which I think is great," Stewart said. "Too often, the academy ignores movies that aren't good."

Stewart breathed life into a show you otherwise could have easily written off. Good thing he was part of Plan A.

A song collection, inspired by Lincoln

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Just in time for Presidents Day comes a new album saluting Abe Lincoln. Honest. Chris Vallillo's "Abraham Lincoln in Song" is a collection of mostly Civil War-era songs, including "Dixie" and "Battle Cry of Freedom."

The target audience? Certainly not the Britney Spears crowd.

"Lovers of acoustic music, history buffs and especially the educational audience," will enjoy the album, said Vallillo, a singer-songwriter from Macomb, Ill., who has studied Lincoln's life and Illinois folk traditions.

The album of mostly acoustic ballads — released on Feb. 12, Lincoln's birthday — grew out of a one-man show in which Vallillo used period music to illustrate Honest Abe's era.

"This should be of interest to anyone who loves Lincoln," said Vallillo, 53.

Vallillo has no illusions about selling as many records as Garth Brooks. But he said the popularity of the 16th president should not be underestimated.
