clipper's remarks: This article summarizes one of the main reasons I back Barack Obama. I believe in community service and helping out others in need and apparently so does he. We don't have to wait for him to finish being president to see him interacting with people who make less than $500k per year.

To see him doing this stuff before he can score political points shows that this is the real him. Not a put on. The fact that he's called on to do these events shows his general respect level.

Barack Obama, not only talking the talk, but WALKING THE WALK- UPDATE: McCain jokes about Katrina

Sen. Obama gathered the pool outside after services at St. Luke's Lutheran Church. He told us that his camapaign plans to mobilize its huge e-mail list of supporters to volunteer or send money once the impact of Gustav becomes apparent and authorities know better what kind of help is needed. He said his campaign is coordinating with local authorities.

"We can activate an e-mail list of a couple million people who want to give back," he said. "I think we can get tons of volunteers to travel down there if it becomes necessary."

He even rolled up his sleeves and went to work in the part of Illinois that bordered Iowa to fill sandbags:

And he did the same thing with Hurricane Katrina BEFORE he was a candidate for President. the following is from a diary I've written before about Katrina:

Senator Obama visited New Orleans FIVE times since the Hurricane hit in 2005. McCain visited twice.

Jun 17 2008These Animal Hairdos Are Turning Me On

Yow yow! There are few things sexier in the world than animal hairdos or eating steak off a naked woman's back while watching Sportscenter. Just look at these things -- hot, hot, hot! Especially the two I put together for that picture, because it looks like the two women are about to go at it, and the animals as well. So not only are you getting a sexy cat fight, but you're getting an erotic dingo/rhino battle to boot. Damn, my glasses are fogging up. And not just because I poured hot coffee in my face, although that probably contributed. So ladies, first one to get an animal hairdo wins a date with yours truly, The Geekologie Writer. Fox News Would Like To Take a Moment To Remind You That the Obamas Are As Black As Satan’s Festering, Baby-Eating Soul

Fox News will keep finding ways to remind its viewers that the Obamas are black (and possibly Muslim), Michelle Malkin will continue to make excuses for Fox News’ dog-whistling racism that expose the fact that she’s about as familiar with logical thinking as a rainbow trout is with knitting

It sure as hell matters to Fox News, which is why it’s dog whistling about Barack so loudly that it’s vibrating the windows. Calling Michelle Obama a “baby mama” isn’t just Fox News having a happy casual larf; it’s using urban slang to a) remind you the Obamas are black, b) belittle a woman of considerable personal accomplishment, and c) frame Barack Obama’s relationship to his wife and children in a way that insults him, minimizes his love for and commitment to his family, and reinforces stereotypes about black men.

The Brass Lion - Steampunk Recumbent

You'll recall I posted a picture of my recumbent bike last week and that one of things I wondered aloud was how one would go about steampunkifying a bike?

I'm happy to say it was at my urging that Eric installed the brass coach lamps. His initial reaction was that they were 'over the top' but thankfully I managed to convince him that the steampunk aesthetic was at it's very best when pushed just beyond the limits of good taste!

The steering gear is quite elegant in it's simplicity and on viewing the movie below you will see the geometry is bang on.

Elk hide wrapped handle bars and a brass bell - nice!

The view from behind - I do love those wooden fenders!

Von Slatt (a pseudonym) recently blogged about his PC on the Web version of his Workshop (steampunkworkshop.com), detailing the process of its construction and the unique modifications he’d included. The kids looked at early, black-and-white photos of "Negroes" and "colored" folk wearing courtly, wrist-to-neck shirts or blouses and illustrious hats. The children wondered if they were slaves, servants or freemen. And where did they go to school?

As Black History Month began, a gaggle of schoolchildren traipsing through the fifth floor of San Jose's main library surrounded Iris Jerke and her history exhibit on Santa Clara Valley's African-Americans. None of the kids was black, and neither is Jerke.

Or hardly anywhere else. Which is why the San Jose State University instructor wants to write the first full history of the county's small but fascinating African-American community.

"What grabs me about this project is that it fills the gaps in the history of African-American San Jose," said Oscar Battle Jr.,

co-founder of the African-American Faculty and Staff Association.

Apple Cuts iPhone Price Ahead of Holidays

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 5 — Apple unexpectedly cut the price of its iPhone Wednesday, claiming that it was seeking to broaden the market for the popular but expensive phone for the Christmas season.

The iPhone was first sold on June 29. A number of recent analysts’ reports have noted that it is selling well and is, indeed, outselling its smartphone competitors. But Mr. Jobs said that if the company had waited past the Christmas buying season to reduce prices it would have been forced to delay for another year reaching a broader consumer market. “We’re feeling like being more aggressive,” he said.

Chetan Sharma, a telecommunications industry analyst based in Issaquah, Wash., said, “They’re trying to get the next demographic to bite into it.”

“My suspicion is that they got to 750,000 really quickly, and then it started to slow down,” said Van Baker, an industry analyst at Gartner Group.

Wheels for the World, Joni and Friends' flagship wheelchair outreach program, informs you on how to donate a wheelchair, crutches, canes, walkers or other rehabilitation equipment through a volunteer organization called Chair Corps. WFTW wheelchair restoration shop requirements are described along with a list of private correctional centers, state prisons and Federal prisons and penitentiaries who partner with Joni and Friends. International Mission Outreaches describes how to apply, what to expect and lists upcoming mission outreach. Wheelchair distribution advises on the three ways wheelchairs are dispensed to disabled individuals living abroad.

Wheels for the World currently restores wheelchairs in 17 prisons in 10 different states. These prisons include federal, state, and private institutions. We are actively seeking more locations.

Study: Chick Magnets Today Look Like Cavemen

A recent study of the skulls of human ancestors and modern humans finds that women, and thereby, evolution, selected for males with relatively short upper faces. The region between the brow and the upper-lip is scrunched proportionately to the overall size of their heads.

Masculine appeal

"A shorter upper face does serve to exaggerate the size of other face features such as the flare of the cheeks and the size of the jaw, but this might not be why it developed," Weston told LiveScience. "Rather the shorter [and] broader the male face the more ‘masculine’ and the less ‘feminine'—based on biological face changes that take place during growth and development—the individual becomes," she said.

They came up with a list of stars with masculine faces, listing them from most to least masculine according to facial dimensions: Will Smith, Peter Andre, Justin Timberlake, Thierry Henry, Brad Pitt, David Beckham, Johnny Depp and Kanye West.
