In 2007, Google´s philanthropic arm invested about $10 million in a US kite company called Makani. An Italian company called Kitegen has a multi-kite scheme that could generate a gigawatt of power, as much as a standard coal plant.

Clip Source: www.physorg.com

High-flying kites tethered to generators could supply as much as 100 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 100,000 homes, according to researchers from the Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands.

The scientists have recently demonstrated that flying a single 10-square-meter kite could produce 10 kilowatts of power, which could supply electricity for about 10 homes.

In their next experiment, the researchers plan to test a 50-kilowatt version, called Laddermill. Eventually, their goal is to build a multi-kite system that could generate a full 100 megawatts.

Electricity produced by kites in the wind could be inexpensive, too. The researchers predict prices to be comparable with generating electricity using coal power, and half that of using wind turbines.

kites generate power by pulling on their strings that are attached to generators on the ground. After reaching their maximum height, the kites are reeled back down to repeat the process.

It survived the Roman Empire, Alexander the Great, the Armenian Genocide in 1915 and dozens of other attempts at conquest - remaining largely independent throughout its history.

Armenia was also among the first post-Soviet countries to readily embrace capitalism, which served to improve somewhat the standard of living, but brought with it a score of other problems. However, regardless of (presently improving) economic situation, the point of this article is to remind the reader (and maybe the future visitor) about the incredible natural and cultural wonders of this country.

Feel the deep poetry of style="padding: 10px;">

The construction of the RMS Titanic represented the culmination of the industrial revolution. It was the largest man-made moving object at the time. To this day it had the largest reciprocating engines ever built.

The industrial revolution also begot air pollution eventually resulting in global warming. Today this is causing the melting of the ice caps and producing glaciers.

So there is a cruel irony in the fate of the RMS Titanic which struck an iceberg on April 14, 1912. Was this a prophetic warning that the earth could suffer the same fate?

Tags: global warming, science

<clipSource>http://www.zenfix.com/?p=8</clipSource>

Cold weather hits South America

clipped by: invictus
clipper's remarks: Extreme weather at both north and south hemispheres.

Clip Source: news.bbc.co.uk

A cold snap is continuing to grip several South American nations, reportedly killing three people.

The temperatures plunged to -22C (-8F) in parts of Argentina's province of Rio Negro, while the capital, Buenos Aires, saw snow for the first time since 1918.

Two exposure deaths were reported in Argentina and one in Chile.

In Argentina, several provinces in the Andes have been placed under a storm alert, the national weather centre said.

No
scientific consensus that humans are the primary cause of global warming

2. Gore

sun, not human activity, causes global warming

5.

Global warming has come and gone

8.
Alarmism then and now

9.
Because it's cold outside today, global warming can't be real

Tags: news, global warming, climate change, science, myths

<clipSource>http://mediamatters.org/items/200703230007</clipSource>

Too many uncertainties for "very likely"

clipped by: amgumen
clipper's remarks: How could they get 90% probability with these uncertainties?

Clip Source: origin.www.nature.com

Some conclusions — such as the effect on particular regions of the world, or exactly how much sea level will rise — remain more uncertain than others.

Perhaps most critically, researchers know relatively little about feedback effects that might enhance — or weaken — the pace and effects of climate change. The complex flow of carbon between soils, plants, the oceans and the atmosphere is still being pinned down by large-scale climate experiments.

Other big unknowns are the effects of the take-up of carbon dioxide by the oceans,

Another major source of uncertainty — and of debate at the Paris meeting where the IPCC report was finalized — is the rise in sea level.

Extreme weather is another example of the remaining uncertainties.

Key sticking points include the inability of global climate models to produce the amount of sea-level rise

Tags: climate change

<clipSource>http://origin.www.nature.com/nature/journal/v445/n7128/full/445580a.html</clipSource>

A Call for Gore to Cool the Hype

clipped by: dorine

Clip Source: www.nytimes.com

<NYT_HEADLINE _moz-userdefined="" type=" " version="1.0">

In talks, articles and blog entries that have appeared since his film and accompanying book came out last year, these scientists argue that some of Mr. Gore’s central points are exaggerated and erroneous. They are alarmed, some say, at what they call his alarmism.

“I don’t want to pick on Al Gore,” Don J.
