Countless megabytes of information on iPods and iTunes and the woes caused by the inability to copy songs out of the iPod - and yet it's only:

cp -R /Volumes/<name>/iPod_Control ~

Michael saw an article recently in a hardcopy Mac magazine. Someone had written in telling how a purchase of Cocktail had enabled all files to be visible in Finder.

The mag's own editor calmly pointed out that no purchase, no additional software, was ever necessary. All one had to do was:

The difficulty in learning Thai is the five tones employed to confer different meanings to the same syllable, so that the syllable mai can have five different meanings in this sentence: mái mài mâi mâi mãi? Which translates as "New wood doesn't burn, does it?" Although rather contrived, it does clearly demonstrate the point that for westerners, who have never come across tones except to express emotion, learning Thai can be quite challenging.

The Thai script is another daunting barrier to learning Thai. Its origins are in Sanskrit by way of Khmer. There are 44 consonants and 32 vowels. Vowels can be before, after, above, below or surrounding consonants. Thai is also written without any spaces between words. Spaces are only used to separate sentences, which further complicates matters. Transliteration is an often cited problem when writing Thai in Roman script as there is no standard system, so you may see some variations on those given here.

Mac OS X 10.4: How to prevent .DS_Store file creation over network connections

To configure a Mac OS X user account so that .DS_Store files are not created when interacting with a remote file server using the Finder, follow the steps below.
Note: This will affect the user's interactions with SMB/CIFS, AFP, NFS, and WebDAV servers.

Open the Terminal.

Type:
defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true

Press Return.

Restart the computer.

If you want to prevent .DS_Store file creation for other users on the same computer, log in to each user account and perform the steps above—or distribute a copy of your newly modified com.apple.desktopservices.plist file to the ~/Library/Preferences folder of other target users.

Water fueled Car

It Runs on Water is a video with Stanley Meyer demonstrating the water fuel cell in a car. Meyer claimed that he could run a 1.6 liter Volkswagen Dune Buggy on water instead of gasoline. He replaced the spark plugs with "injectors" to spray a fine mist into the engine cylinders, which he claimed were electrified at a resonant frequency. The fuel cell would split water into hydrogen and oxygen gas, which would combust back into water vapor in a conventional hydrogen engine to produce net energy. Estimates made showed that only 22 US gallons (83 L) of water were required to travel from one US coast to the other. Meyer also demonstrated his vehicle for his city's local news station Action 6 News. A video of the buggie in action can be found here.

How to Remove Broken/Dead iTunes links

1. Make a smart playlist called “All Files” with this rule: “Artist” is not “123456789″ (or any nonsense name that won’t be in your library).

2. Make a static playlist called “All Live Files”.

3. Make a smart playlist called “Missing Files” with these rules: Match all of the following rules, Playlist is “All Files”, Playlist is not “All Live Files”

4. Select all the files from “All Files” and drag them into “All Live Files”. The dead files marked (!) will not copy over.

5. “Missing Files” will contain all of your dead files. Select all and delete. Voila, a nice clean iTunes library.

I have these three playlists in their own folder. Whenever I gather more than a couple dead tracks for whatever reason, I delete all the tracks in “All Live Files” and repeat steps 4 and 5.
