Woman Uses Bra As An SOS Signal

An American woman has been rescued from a German mountain after sending an signal for help using her bra.

The woman, who had been missing for more than three days after being hurt while hiking, hooked the brightly coloured sports bra on a cable used for transporting logs to a valley below, hoping it would lead rescuers to her.

The 24-year-old outdoors enthusiast from Colorado was hiking alone in the Bavarian Alps hiking alone near Berchtesgaden, close to the border with Austria, last Monday.

She lost her way when the weather turned bad and she fell 18 feet down a crevasse, injuring her shoulder, ankle and head.

Soon after the Gulf War in 1991, a group of military women pressed Congress to allow female pilots to fly combat missions. But a Vietnam War hero in the Senate, John McCain, pushed back hard.

McCain lost that legislative battle, and women pilots started moving into combat roles in the mid-1990s.

And though they remain barred from ground combat units, women -- who make up about 15% of the military -- are playing a bigger fighting role than ever. About 100 have died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

McCain's aides said only that he stood by his past positions, suggesting that he would resist pressures for change.

In the 1991 debate over women pilots, McCain took a traditionalist stance. "This nation has existed for over 215 years," McCain said. "At no time in the history of our nation have women been in combat roles."

McCain's long-standing opposition to women in combat has raised questions among his critics about his commitment to women's rights.

However, he did not run again for office because he was a married man who had an affair, and obviously the voters in this state thought his personal life was more important than his accomplishments. It's a shame because our current governor is rumored to have many more skeletons in his closet, but he keeps them under the covers so to speak, and I've seen him do NOTHING for this state IMHO. Get with the program here baby, shhhhhhhhh . . . do what you want and get down and dirty when the lights are low and just carry your Bible in the meantime, it's God, Country, and the red, white, and blue.

Walt Disney would have been proud of John McCain’s presentation on Thursday of what the world might look like at the end of a first McCain term as president.

Listening to the speech was like walking through the gates of Fantasyland, which Disney always said was the happiest kingdom of them all. The war in Iraq will have been won. Crack intelligence work will have led to the capture or death of Osama bin Laden. Taxes will be lower and the U.S. economy will be swell. And maybe best of all (I’m not sure for whom), work will have begun on 20 brand-new nuclear reactors.

On the same day that the senator unveiled his candy-coated vision, a former governor of West Virginia, Bob Wise, came by my office to talk about a much more prosaic matter — the terrible job that the nation is doing in getting its high school kids ready for the real world.

The richest 1 percent of Americans received about $491 billion in tax breaks between 2001 and 2008. That’s nearly the same amount as U.S. debt held by China — $493 billion — in the form of Treasury securities.

OMG, it's so beautiful to be an American eh? First of all, I came up in a period that you had to be silent or else baby. I learned very quickly as a bisexual woman that I'd better make the Tila Tequila choice--the guy--every time. Alec & baby brother Steve have differing views on samd-sex marriage

Alec, totally favours same-sex marriage while Steve quotes the bible. Oh well, at least the fundies can't talk about the incredible lack of morality in Hollywood. Film and TV star Alec Baldwin has spoken publicly about the anti-gay political views of his younger and less well-known brother Stephen.

Stephen is best-known for his roles in the controversial 1994 film Threesome and 1995 thriller The Usual Suspects.

He became a born-again Christian after the attacks on New York on September 11th 2001.

During an appearance on the Howard Stern radio show in January he spoke out about same-sex marriage.

"I don't believe that gay marriage is in line with God's Word, which is found in the Bible," Baldwin said.

His hard line stance contrasts sharply with his more famous brother Alec Baldwin.

In a recent interview with gay magazine The Advocate Alec seemed unconcerned about his youngest brother's views.

"They want to ban gay marriage because those people are incapable of having a biological family, that's their only argument.

We’ve been hearing a lot about “Saturday Night Live” and the fun it has been having with the presidential race. But hardly a whisper has been heard about a Congressional hearing in Washington last week on a topic that could have been drawn, in all its tragic monstrosity, from the theater of the absurd.

The war in Iraq will ultimately cost U.S. taxpayers not hundreds of billions of dollars, but an astonishing $2 trillion, and perhaps more. There has been very little in the way of public conversation, even in the presidential campaigns, about the consequences of these costs, which are like a cancer inside the American economy.

“For a fraction of the cost of this war,” said Mr. Stiglitz, “we could have put Social Security on a sound footing for the next half-century or more.”

What we’re getting instead is the stuff of nightmares.

Those costs will be with us for decades

On a cold day in January, Dan Stoicescu, a millionaire living in Switzerland, became the second person in the world to buy the full sequence of his own genetic code.

He is also among a relatively small group of individuals who could afford the $350,000 price tag.

Scientists have so far unraveled only a handful of complete human genomes, all financed by governments, foundations and corporations in the name of medical research. But as the cost of genome sequencing goes from stratospheric to merely very expensive, it is piquing the interest of a new clientele.

“I’d rather spend my money on my genome than a Bentley or an airplane,” said Mr. Stoicescu, 56, a biotechnology entrepreneur who retired two years ago after selling his company. He says he will check discoveries about genetic disease risk against his genome sequence daily, “like a stock portfolio.”

We all love the Internet and see all the great things it offers, but we all know all the bad things it can do and we hear on the news all the Internet kidnappings and the latest Virus spreading all over, but is the Internet bad or good thing? Is there any real answer to it?

Do you think maybe this is us evolving and becoming more adapted to the world around us? With all the RSS readers and big companies taking over the Internet like Google are we creating some new type of country and new Law? I

We also see some people become addicted to the Internet, Kids playing online games and spending their whole lives becoming someone they are not, afraid to go out in the read world as their life online is much more respected then their own in the real world.

Why The Hostility Towards Differences?

As someone who felt they were made to "fit in" with the rest of societies "ideas" of how one is supposed to feel, I can totally relate to this article. I've asked myself so many times why there is so much hostility towards differences and I can never come up with a good answer. So growing up, I tried to fit in outwardly while secretly living quite a different lifestyle. The ironic part is that I found some of the most homophobic people to actually harbor gay tendencies themselves.

Then, Jared was a UC Santa Cruz sophomore who had been openly, defiantly gay for years.

During high school in Orange County, he'd been taunted, shoved and spat on by classmates because he wore nail polish, makeup and 3-inch heels. School officials urged him to drop out and get his GED. "Why," he remembered being asked, "do you want to look like such a freak?"

I thought of Jared as I read about Oxnard student Larry King, an eighth-grader shot to death in computer lab allegedly by a 14-year-old classmate in what authorities are calling a hate crime.

On Friday, we talked for a long time about why crimes like this continue to occur. He's convinced it's because kids don't learn enough about our nation's recent history to see the links between homophobia, racism and sexism.

You'd hardly know I was ill if you were to look at me. I go out with my friends, have a drink, travel, work, all the things everyone else does.

I have cystic fibrosis. It's an incurable, genetic disease, where sufferers have thick mucus clogging their lungs.

Instead, I have lived life to the full - parties, travel and romance. I love new sports and I've been whitewater-rafting, tandem sky-diving and bungee-jumping in Australia. I know I've got a lot to pack in.

At school I was puzzled by my friends' obsessions with trivia. You're unhappy with your hair? Really? Oddly, I've become more girly in adulthood.

In my mid-20s, however, I was asked out on dates by men who didn't know me so well.

One man reacted in a bizarre way. He said he felt he'd been cursed, falling for someone who was ill. So cystic fibrosis has one advantage - it sifts out the nice guys from the idiots.
