We do it all the time with emails and direct messages on multiple services. However, sometimes information is just too sensitive to keep around once it's been sent. Wouldn't it be great to have messages self-destruct after being read a la Harry Potter style? Well Privnote is just the service for you.

Developed by Insophia using Django and Python, Privnote allows you to send a message and have it be immediately deleted once it is read. Spotted by MakeUsOf, simply head to the homepage of Privnote and type in your message. Once your done click the "post it" button to grab a link to send to a recipient. Once the message is read or the link is clicked, the link is no longer accessible. You can also receive notifications for when a your link is clicked, which will include the ip address of the reader.

Tags: email, messaging, privacy, blogclip, via:readwriteweb, via:friendfeed, tools

<clipSource>http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/send_messages_that_self-destruct_with_privnote.php</clipSource>

THE Bigot is Dead

clipped by: zasel
clipper's remarks: Jesse Helms was a disgraceful representation of an elected official in our country. He despised blacks, gays, lesbians, hispanics and everyone who did not look like him or believed as he believed.

While I never take pleasure in the death of another human being, it is my sincere hope that with his death, another layer of bigotry in the U.S. is buried with him. I have to think that maybe seeing Obama on the brink of the presidency may have been just too much for his aging heart to take.

Clip Source: blogs.villagevoice.com

Jesse Helms, an unrepentant supporter of unnatural causes throughout his life, died of natural causes this morning at the age of 86.

The death of Helms is just about the best birthday present the United States could wish for on July 4. Free at last — of Jesse Helms.

As a senator, he explained that he voted against Roberta Achtenberg, President Clinton's nominee for a Housing and Urban Development position, "because she's a damn lesbian."

In 1990, Helms stayed away in protest when Nelson Mandela addressed a joint session of Congress.

While the networks and most of the press will soft-pedal his virulent racism and reckless disregard for the First Amendment in his hounding of artists, foreigners and many others, Helms stayed his divisive course until the bitter end — at least until the end of his public career.

And it's fitting that he should die during a presidential race that features young black man Barack Obama.

Their work covers a broad spectrum of research dedicated to understanding the origins of life and the extent to which life may be present beyond Earth. Traditionally, each scientist, or principal investigator (PI), has had many partners who sponsor his/her work including NASA, the National Science Foundation, and major universities. However, current trends in government funding are making it increasingly difficult for astrobiologists to depend on those sources of support.

Tags: science, is, expensive

<clipSource>http://www.seti.org/AdoptAScientist/</clipSource>

Ernest Hemingway’s Top 9 Words of Wisdom

clipped by: revenantdm
clipper's remarks: Hemingway was an amazing man - a rare talent. The man, who said he was offering to marry the woman because the stigma of rape in India meant no one else would, was convicted of raping and seriously injuring a 22-year-old nurse in September 2003 at the hospital where they both worked. The survivor was asked in court whether she would accept the proposal from her attacker, who had hoped it might lower his sentence. The judge postponed sentencing until the next day, when the rape victim told the court she had rejected his petition.

The production was produced and directed by puppeteer Jim Henson, and was one of several experiments with the live-action film medium which he conducted in the 1960s, before focusing entirely on the Muppets and other puppet works. The screenplay was co-written by long-time Muppet writer Jerry Juhl (who also appears in a cameo).

Tags: jim henson, video, cube, film, movie, rare

<clipSource>http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2112529755533998573&q=cube+henson&ei=YjhmSPvIN4uqiwLB6YjdBg</clipSource>

Chomsky: US public irrelevant

clipped by: tabsey
clipper's remarks: A moderate Chomsky who holds more hope now than during the Bush era. In writing about the last election in 2004, you called America's system a "fake democracy" in which the public is hardly more than an irrelevant onlooker, and you've been arguing in your work in the last year or so that the candidates this time around are considerably to the right of public opinion on all major issues.

So, the question is, do Americans have any legitimate hope of change this time around? And what is the difference in dynamic between America's presidential "cup" in 2008 compared to 2004 and 2000?

Tags: moderate, chomsky, contradiction

<clipSource>http://english.aljazeera.net/news/americas/2008/06/2008624202053652281.html</clipSource>

me me me meeeeeee

clipped by: invisableman

Clip Source: slatereport.blogspot.com

Oh ohh say can you seeeeeeee!

<clipSource>http://slatereport.blogspot.com/2008/06/me-me-me-meeeee.html</clipSource>

Gender-bending: the original spirit of Pride

clipped by: spherepet

Clip Source: www.theglobeandmail.com

Gender-bending: the original spirit of Pride

June 25, 2008 at 12:18 AM EDT

The occasion is Pride Day, one of Canada's largest cultural events.

Some complain that the event's mainstream acceptance has left Pride without soul, a massive corporate-sponsored opium-farm. Where, the radicals ask, is the deep iconoclastic spirit of the very first Pride marches, before it was safe to be gay?

More than ever, the answer is in the second part of what the Pride revellers gather to be proud of: not homosexuality, but gender-bending. Today, in most parts of Canada, almost anyone can be gay. But to be transgender takes a particular courage.

Canadians are steadily approaching the new cultural battleground of transsexual rights mindful of ethical lessons from previous debates about minorities

cisgender

sexual liberation

personal expression

identified with one's birth sex

invaluable social wealth

Tags: pride, pride day

<clipSource>http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080624.wcomment0625/BNStory/specialComment/home</clipSource>

Good Calories, Bad Calories: Gary Taubes

clipped by: Antara
clipper's remarks: Interesting stuff, could be life changing info for some.

Clip Source: www.pbs.org

What made you go after this topic in the first place?

Two things. I'd been reporting on salt and blood pressure, which is a huge controversy, and some of the people involved in that were involved in the advice to tell Americans to eat low-fat diets, and they were terrible scientists. These were some of the worst scientists I'd ever come across in my 20-odd year career of writing about controversial science.

I literally called up my editor and said, "I just got off the phone with so-and-so, and he's [taken] credit for getting Americans to eat less eggs and less fat. This guy's one of the worst scientists I've ever talked to, and if he was involved in this, then there's a story there." And that was it. I didn't know what the story was. I just knew there was a story.

Tags: gary taubes, health, food

<clipSource>http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/diet/interviews/taubes.html</clipSource>

A Photographic Reaction to the Kinsey Report, 1953

clipped by: alanocu
clipper's remarks: You probably know that "The Kinsey Reports are two books on human sexual behavior, Sexual Behavior in the Human Male (1948) and Sexual Behavior in the Human Female (1953), by Dr. Alfred Kinsey, Wardell Pomeroy and others."

"The research astounded the general public and was immediately controversial and sensational.
