Pollster: Three new states swing solidly Obama

As of today we have Obama sitting comfortably with 264 electoral votes. McCain has only 163. It is very unlikely that any of the states we have put in the Obama column will switch to McCain in the coming weeks. Therefore, McCain has to win nearly all of the remaining toss-up states to win in November.

Here are the latest changes as we see it:

New Hampshire from toss-up to Obama

North Carolina from McCain to toss-up

Michigan from toss-up to Obama

Missouri from McCain to toss-up

Minnesota REMAINS Obama

The McCain campaign made several missteps last week including campaigning in Iowa (a sure Obama state) and allowing the Palin-Couric interview to be edited and dribbled out over a 7 day period, but the overwhelming force is the deteriorating economy and not even a perfect campaign could weather that storm.

There are more turns to come in this election and it is not over yet but it sure seems like it is.

No Gay marriage

Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

Ten Reasons Gay Marriage is Un-American

I saw this posted on a BBS -- there was no attribution.

Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Britany Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

Questioning Someone Else's Debt

It's called student loans. Since when are they supposed to be embarrassing? Just because my parents could not pay for me to go to college, I am supposed to be ashamed?

And of course, without child support or any contributions, I raised my two youngest siblings for seven years. Sometimes I had to borrow more money in student loans to support them. I was 25 and in graduate school with custody of my 13 year old sister, and the next year getting custody of my 12 year old brother. Where else was I supposed to get money? My story is in the clipped book as Chapter 7.

Vice presidential candidates Joe Biden and Sarah Palin will debate this week.
What would you ask them about their religious beliefs and why?

I would support no candidate for national office who sought to impose a narrow religious viewpoint on our multifaceted nation or one who would appoint religiously ideological candidates to the Supreme Court. So it would not occur to me to question them about their religion unless they had given some indication that they were in fact religious imperialists. I appreciate our pluralistic society.

I regard Sarah Palin's support of "Creation Science" being taught in public school to be primarily a manifestation of ignorance, not religion, and I do not want ignorance in any national office. I also regard homophobia not as a religious issue, but as an issue in which prejudice overcomes knowledge.

U-M study: More programs needed to aid students with mental illnesses

The other authors are Mark Holter, an assistant professor in the School of Social Work, and Deborah Megivern, a social work assistant professor at Washington University in St. Louis. The authors studied 103 college programs nationwide and categorized them according to the services they provide. Deborah Megivern, a doctoral candidate in social work and psychology at the University of Michigan School of Social Work has been named the 2000 recipient of the Todd E. Husted Memorial Award.

After earning her doctoral degree this year, Megivern will begin a new position as a postdoctoral researcher with the Center for Mental Health Services at Washington University in St. Louis.

Flirting with Palin earns Pakistani president a fatwa

With some overly friendly comments to Gov. Sarah Palin at the United Nations, Asif Ali Zardari has succeeded in uniting one of Pakistan's hard-line mosques and its feminists after a few weeks in office.

A radical Muslim prayer leader said the president shamed the nation for "indecent gestures, filthy remarks, and repeated praise of a non-Muslim lady wearing a short skirt."

Feminists charged that once again a male Pakistani leader has embarrassed the country with sexist remarks. And across the board, the Pakistani press has shown disapproval.

Does Bush Believe McCain Was Tortured?

The torture that was deployed against McCain emerges in all the various accounts. It involved sleep deprivation, the withholding of medical treatment, stress positions, long-time standing, and beating. Sound familiar?

According to the Bush administration's definition of torture, McCain was therefore not tortured.

Cheney denies that McCain was tortured; as does Bush. So do John Yoo and David Addington and George Tenet.

No war crimes were committed against McCain. And the techniques used are, according to the president, tools to extract accurate information. And so the false confessions that McCain was forced to make were, according to the logic of the Bush administration, as accurate as the "intelligence" we have procured from "interrogating" terror suspects. Feel safer?

Now the kicker: in the Military Commissions Act, McCain acquiesced to the use of these techniques against terror suspects by the CIA. And so the tortured became the enabler of torture.

“Class warfare.”

Anytime it’s demanded that the gaping loopholes on business taxes be closed, it’s “class warfare.” Anytime that the government is asked to do something to alleviate the gap between rich and poor, it’s “class warfare.” Heck, anytime anything other than complete laissez faire free markets is advocated (other than bailing out failed corporations, of course), the Republican battle cry goes up: “Class warfare!”

Jesus came with an economic message, namely a mandate to eliminate the gross disparity between rich and poor

Every time they accuse one of their opponents of advocating “class warfare,” they are really advocating the status quo of a system that keeps millions in the United States and billions around the world living in poverty.

Drenched in Marxist overtones, the term is invoked for a specific purpose: to draw a link in the public’s mind between liberal/progressive economic policies and Marxism, a fallacy which plays on the

lingering fears of Communist infiltration.

Never before have gay story lines been so prominent. Nor have there ever been so many gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender characters on television — 83 by a recent count from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, not counting reality shows, daytime dramas or gay-oriented cable networks.

Yet for most gay actors, Hollywood is not a warm and fuzzy episode of “Will & Grace.” Today, it is certainly more acceptable to be openly gay. But these actors must still answer wrenching questions: Just how candid do you want to be? Would you be happy appearing only in comedies, or being pigeonholed as a character actor? And what does the line “You’re just not right for the role” really mean?

There can no longer be any doubt: Sarah Palin is absolutely, positively not qualified to be commander in chief, and she doesn't belong on the Republican ticket. I can't imagine her being ready for a 3 a.m. call on a national security emergency; I can't imagine her fielding one on an economic emergency, either – the possibility Paul Krugman convincingly framed Monday morning.

Her stunning ignorance about Israel, Iran and the Bush Doctrine in the Charlie Gibson interview almost three weeks ago was frightening, but the dim way she answered virtually every question Katie Couric asked last week was even more chilling.

Ever since, she has continued to gaffe her way through the campaign: On Saturday she said she'd go after Osama bin Laden in Pakistan – even though that's against the McCain position, and McCain had to contradict her publicly. Newsweek's Fareed Zakaria says it best: All too often, when Palin opens her mouth, what comes out is "gibberish."
