The number of vocally anti-war soldiers appears to be growing.

"You take an average group of soldiers and ask them, 'Is the war worth it?' and you get close to a majority saying it is not really necessary or viable," says David Cortright, author of Soldiers in Revolt: GI Resistance During the Vietnam War, who has been touring and speaking at bases. "The anti-war sentiments are much more pervasive now in Iraq."

As a result, soldiers say, the military is increasingly trying to silence them with formal threats as well as less official intimidation techniques: At their own discretion, commanders can enact "non-judicial punishments," such as imposing a diet of bread and water, enforcing longer work hours, and requiring intensive physical activity like hauling sandbags back and forth or running for hours in full gear.

"It's hard to explain how much the military has control over your entire life,"

An American woman has been rescued from a German mountain after sending an signal for help using her bra.

The woman, who had been missing for more than three days after being hurt while hiking, hooked the brightly coloured sports bra on a cable used for transporting logs to a valley below, hoping it would lead rescuers to her.

The 24-year-old outdoors enthusiast from Colorado was hiking alone in the Bavarian Alps hiking alone near Berchtesgaden, close to the border with Austria, last Monday.

She lost her way when the weather turned bad and she fell 18 feet down a crevasse, injuring her shoulder, ankle and head.

The richest 1 percent of Americans received about $491 billion in tax breaks between 2001 and 2008. That’s nearly the same amount as U.S. debt held by China — $493 billion — in the form of Treasury securities.

Do you want our government to mortgage more of our nation’s future to finance tax breaks for the rich?

Tax cuts have already helped the richest 1 percent — whose annual incomes average about $1.5 million — increase their share of the nation’s income to a higher level than any year since 1928 on the eve of the Great Depression.

The International Monetary Fund says the United States is in the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. Yet, we are borrowing money with interest to finance tax cuts for Wall Street executives.

We’ve been hearing a lot about “Saturday Night Live” and the fun it has been having with the presidential race. But hardly a whisper has been heard about a Congressional hearing in Washington last week on a topic that could have been drawn, in all its tragic monstrosity, from the theater of the absurd.

The war in Iraq will ultimately cost U.S. taxpayers not hundreds of billions of dollars, but an astonishing $2 trillion, and perhaps more. There has been very little in the way of public conversation, even in the presidential campaigns, about the consequences of these costs, which are like a cancer inside the American economy.

“For a fraction of the cost of this war,” said Mr. Stiglitz, “we could have put Social Security on a sound footing for the next half-century or more.”

What we’re getting instead is the stuff of nightmares.

Those costs will be with us for decades

I woke up in pain caused by a GYN condiditon that I suffer from (during a certain time of the month; sorry guys!) and even though my pain meds took the edge off I still couldn't sleep and I couldn't stop thinking about NonStat's most excellent clip and wanted to explore it further.

We all love the Internet and see all the great things it offers, but we all know all the bad things it can do and we hear on the news all the Internet kidnappings and the latest Virus spreading all over, but is the Internet bad or good thing? Is there any real answer to it?

Do you think maybe this is us evolving and becoming more adapted to the world around us? With all the RSS readers and big companies taking over the Internet like Google are we creating some new type of country and new Law? I

We also see some people become addicted to the Internet, Kids playing online games and spending their whole lives becoming someone they are not, afraid to go out in the read world as their life online is much more respected then their own in the real world.

Is the Internet evolving us humans

Why The Hostility Towards Differences?

As someone who felt they were made to "fit in" with the rest of societies "ideas" of how one is supposed to feel, I can totally relate to this article. I've asked myself so many times why there is so much hostility towards differences and I can never come up with a good answer. So growing up, I tried to fit in outwardly while secretly living quite a different lifestyle. The ironic part is that I found some of the most homophobic people to actually harbor gay tendencies themselves.

Then, Jared was a UC Santa Cruz sophomore who had been openly, defiantly gay for years.

During high school in Orange County, he'd been taunted, shoved and spat on by classmates because he wore nail polish, makeup and 3-inch heels. School officials urged him to drop out and get his GED. "Why," he remembered being asked, "do you want to look like such a freak?"

I thought of Jared as I read about Oxnard student Larry King, an eighth-grader shot to death in computer lab allegedly by a 14-year-old classmate in what authorities are calling a hate crime.

On Friday, we talked for a long time about why crimes like this continue to occur. He's convinced it's because kids don't learn enough about our nation's recent history to see the links between homophobia, racism and sexism.

You'd hardly know I was ill if you were to look at me. I go out with my friends, have a drink, travel, work, all the things everyone else does.

I have cystic fibrosis. It's an incurable, genetic disease, where sufferers have thick mucus clogging their lungs.

Instead, I have lived life to the full - parties, travel and romance. I love new sports and I've been whitewater-rafting, tandem sky-diving and bungee-jumping in Australia. I know I've got a lot to pack in.

At school I was puzzled by my friends' obsessions with trivia. You're unhappy with your hair? Really? Oddly, I've become more girly in adulthood.

In my mid-20s, however, I was asked out on dates by men who didn't know me so well.

One man reacted in a bizarre way. He said he felt he'd been cursed, falling for someone who was ill. So cystic fibrosis has one advantage - it sifts out the nice guys from the idiots.

After three weeks of intensive "restoration" therapy, former megachurch leader, meth-purchaser and intimate man-on-man massage enthusiast Ted Haggard declared that he was "completely heterosexual."

Even so, he ran into quite a bit of trouble during the follow-up part of his spiritual restoration, planning to move into a Phoenix halfway house, the Dream Center, to "minister to men" there while working toward his degree in counseling. The that invitation was withdrawn after Ted sent out a boldly insane "fund-me-please" letter asking for fans to support him rather than getting himself a j-o-b.

It also didn't go over well with his de-gaying team that the letter was sent out from a Colorado Springs outfit called "Families With a Mission," run by Paul G. Huberty who is registered as a sex offender (in Hawaii for "sodomy and indecent acts" with "a 17-year-old female).

Where, in this alleged season of change, is the big idea?

What’s missing in this campaign is a bold vision of where the United States should be heading in these crucially important early years of the 21st century. In their different ways, Senators Clinton and Obama have shown themselves to be inspirational and at times even heroic figures. But neither has offered the vision that this moment in history demands.

We’re excited more by who they are than by what they’ve promised to do.

But do we have any real sense of what Senator Obama will do to stop the stagnation of the middle class and resuscitate the American dream? Do we have any reason to believe that during a Clinton presidency we’ll see a transformation of the nation’s decaying infrastructure? Does John McCain have the stuff to lead us from a long debilitating period of dependence on foreign oil to a new and exciting world of energy efficiency and innovation?

YOU know what is supposed to happen when you grow old. You will slow down, you will grow weak, your steps will become short and mincing, and you will lose your sense of balance. That’s what aging researchers consistently find, and it’s no surprise to most of us.

But it is worth remembering that the people in those studies were sedentary, said Dr. Vonda Wright, a professor of orthopedics at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Wright, a 40-year-old runner, decided to study people who kept training as they got older or began competing in middle age. She wanted to know what happens to them and at what age does performance start to decline.

Their results are surprising, even to many of the researchers themselves. The investigators find that while you will slow down as you age, you may be able to stave off more of the deterioration than you thought.

The true legacy of this election cycle's South Carolina slimefest remains to be seen.

In 2000, John McCain faced a do-or-die contest in South Carolina and got slashed by allegations that he had fathered an illegitimate black child and abandoned his fellow POWs in Vietnam. McCain lost in South Carolina by 11 points and his campaign never recovered.

The Clintons may well have sacrificed this state in order to better their chances of winning elsewhere. Roughly 40 percent of voters said they made up their mind in the last week. Half of those people went for Obama, and one-third went for Edwards. Few went for Clinton. Those who said they factored Bill Clinton's campaigning into their decision went for Obama instead of Clinton. Seventy percent of voters thought the Clinton campaign attacked Obama unfairly. In short, people hated the negative campaigning in recent days
