Puppies to rescue stressed out college kids

Students at Chapman University will have some cuddly canines to help them cope with the stress of finals this month. The Orange County, Calif., school’s Active Minds Club has put together a little something called “Furry Friends for Finals.” The hope is that the pups will help students de-stress.

The puppies will be stationed outside the university library, hoping to do their part to help the students survive in the middle of cram week, according to the LA Times.

It’s a brilliant idea — one I could have really used at Northwestern U. And it’s a win-win, especially if shelter dogs or dogs in need of foster homes could be used. (Not for adoption purposes, but just to get them out of shelters and into loving hands for an afternoon.) I hope more colleges and dog people can get together to create a program like this.

The dogs don’t need to be puppies to be therapeutic. They just have to be their good old doggy selves, and they’ll be better than almost any stress therapy money can buy.

Jeff Buckley recorded the alien-inspired song

"Ozark Melody" with me and my musical partner Fred Reed in the summer of 1996.

It began when I told Jeff about my alien book I had written. Fred handed him a mandolin, which he claimed he never played before in his life. But he played it like he was born playing it. He just started strumming on the mandolin singing "Oh the aliens are coming." I quickly started writing the rest of the lyrics, and the rest, as they say, is musical history -- of a sorts.

While I wrote the lyrics, Jeff and Fred worked out the tune, strummed mandolin and guitar, and recorded the entire song in one breakneck four-hour session. All three of us sang

Jeff received wide acclaim and notoriety with his 1994 debut album "Grace" (Sony Records). His death in May of 1997 shocked everyone who knew him and loved his music.

During the session I could see, behind his incredible musical virtuosity, a mad and mischievous twinkle in his eye.

MIT analysis backs Obama

A new analysis by a leading MIT economist provides new ammunition for Democrats as the Senate begins formally debating the historic health-reform bill being pushed by President Barack Obama.

The report concludes that under the Senate’s health-reform bill, Americans buying individual coverage will pay less than they do for today's typical individual market coverage, and would be protected from high out-of-pocket costs.

So Democrats will argue that under the Senate bill, Americans would pay less for more.

The new document arms Democrats with a response to the contention of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) that the bill would mean “higher premiums, higher taxes, and massive cuts to Medicare.”

The report will be circulated to Capitol Hill this week. Read the four-page report here.

On Sept. 4, German forces in Kunduz province in northern Afghanistan called in a U.S. air strike on two fuel tankers that had been captured by "anti-coalition forces" (ACF).

In the aftermath of the attack, it was found that 142 people had been killed, and that the great majority of them were civilians.

Post Pic David Bowie’s Response To First American Fan Letter

Well over forty years since David Bowie became a well known artist (now legend), a letter has surfaced online of what appears to be a response to his first fan letter from the great United States of America.

The letter that started it all was written by Sandra Dodd (Sandra Adams, back then) who was a 14 year old fan from an unknown location in the states. Bowie’s writing is sincere and gives you brief glimpse at Bowie before he had the world in his hands for the taking.

The letter’s on PITT stationery which was the manager’s stationery (Kenneth Pitt). Oddly Sandra never bought another Bowie album as her musical tastes had shifted toward folk music. Can you blame her though? The hippie revolution was about to start without her.
