In our fact sheet and pamphlet, (and see For More Information, below) we show how France's decision to reprocess reactor fiuel has contaminated the seas as far as the Artic Circle and may have led to leukemia clusters near the reprocessing plant. Its decision to try breeder reactors was an expensive failure. Its plutonium fuel program has not reduced its surplus stockpile of plutonium which is calculated at greater than 80 metric tons sitting in tens of thousands of vulnerable containers and with no disposal option. France has no radioactive waste repository.

Mildred Loving, a black woman whose challenge to Virginia’s ban on interracial marriage led to a landmark Supreme Court ruling striking down such laws nationwide, has died, her daughter said Monday.

Peggy Fortune said Loving, 68, died Friday at her home in rural Milford. She did not disclose the cause of death.

Loving and her white husband, Richard, changed history in 1967 when the U.S. Supreme Court upheld their right to marry. The ruling struck down laws banning racially mixed marriages in at least 17 states.

They had married in Washington in 1958, when she was 18. Returning to their Virginia hometown, they were arrested within weeks and convicted on charges of “cohabiting as man and wife, against the peace and dignity of the Commonwealth,” according to their indictments.

Farewell to a courageous and exemplary American, one who continued until the end of her life to stand up for what she believed in.

Slavery – the owning of human beings – is morally indefensible wherever and whenever it occurred. But it was a global institution that existed virtually everywhere from time immemorial that Western European culture first ended. And in America from 1861-65 we paid a big price in blood for our “sin” of slavery.

I do think America’s Founding offers moral meaning to us in the 21st Century. And the way in which the key Founders believed in liberty and equality of religious rights for all people, including atheists is one such part of America’s religious history of which I am particularly proud.

The primary problem with the Christian America idea is that it seems to only recognize the Bible/Christian principles as a source of ideas for American government and practically pretends the other ideological traditions didn’t exist.

the Founders were greatly concerned with religious rights and wanted to take sectarian disputes out of politics.

Genetics pioneer Craig Venter shook things up at the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conference in Monterey Thursday, announcing that he is getting closer to creating a synthetic form of life.

Imagine an organism that consumes carbon dioxide and can be used to battle global warming. A new species that can chemically generate fuel. Or a life form that helps create vaccines or antibiotics.

Wherever you come down on the issue, Venter's pioneering work in the field he calls "synthetic genomics" is truly groundbreaking. It will be fascinating to see how our culture responds to the work as his team grows closer to actually creating life.
