The rich may be different than you and me--but not nearly as different as the characters that comprise the Forbes Fictional 15, our annual listing of fiction's very wealthiest. This year's selection includes a duck, a wizard, a Nigerian prince and even a plumber. Aggregate (fictional) net worth? $111 billion.

The biggest change to this year's list comes at the very top. For the first time in the Fictional 15's history, Santa Claus has been unseated from the number-one spot, replaced by defense contractor Oliver ''Daddy'' Warbucks.

In the absence of the tubby toy titan, Oliver Warbucks now reigns as the world's richest fictional character. The ex-U.S. Army general turned industrialist saw his net worth surge to $36.2 billion, thanks to the ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan and because of a contract to provide oil-well maintenance in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Other characters were dropped for more prosaic reasons. Plummeting demand for fur coats hit puppy-hating Cruella De Vil especially hard, while playboy billionaire Arthur Bach died from liver failure. Ebenezer Scrooge gave the bulk of his $1.7 billion fortune to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. And Superman nemesis Lex Luthor is struggling to rebuild his fortune after blowing billions on his latest (futile) attempt to take over the world.

Other newcomers include Mario, the videogame plumber who built a $1 billion fortune after decades of collecting gold coins, and billionaire narcocapitalist Tony Montana, aka Scarface.

This extraordinary image was printed in the Sunday Telegraph last week with an appeal to find the boy in the picture

The appeal prompted a flood of responses, the most remarkable from the boy himself, Mike Condy

Mr Condy said that Rupert the Rhino was rescued by the his family after the Zambezi Valley in Africa was flooded in 1962, killing the animal's mother and leaving him stranded

Rupert quickly settled into colonial life with the Condy household, giving a bird-like chirp every morning as a greeting. He was especially fond of breaking into the adult bedroom and stealing Mrs Condy's expensive face cream.

The young rhino lived in the family garage, surrounded by infra-red lamps and hay bales to keep him warm.

Every night Rupert would get a sudden burst of energy and go on a rampage through the house

Rupert would run around the house 10 or 15 times, with Ricky the Irish terrier hot on his heels - much to the delight of the Condy children

Eventually however, Rupert's horn grew to three inches and his rampages became too much for the family home

He was released back into the wild at Matopas National Park, where the family visited him regularly and Rupert would always give them his welcoming chirp.

Correction WE MISTAKENLY REPORTED that 10 spammers rather than 200 were responsible for the majority of spam, as originally reported by Spamhaus itself, here. Apologies to Spamhaus.

200 WELL AIMED silver bullets would take care of 80 per cent of the world's spam, according to the anti-spam organisation Spamhaus. According to security outfit, Spamhaus there are only 200 people that are responsible for most of the spam in the world.

The worst is a "multi-aliased spammer" known variously as Alex or Alexey who lives in the Ukraine. Alex is alleged to work with Russian spam bandits called Pavka/Artofit, which use spam bots to churn out junk.

Leo Kuvayev, number two on the list, who also worked with Pavka/Artofit, has been in hiding after a Massachusetts court handed down $37 million in fines in October 2005 against him for his operations in the US.

Other names include Michael Lindsay of iMedia Networks who Spamhaus says runs a "full-fledged spam-hosting operation" and Jeffrey Peters who runs a fake Russian ISP for spam operations.

Four of the top ten spammers are from Russia, and one from the Ukraine works. Two are from the US, with the others from Israel, Hong Kong, and Canada.

Warren Ellis is reporting that many Second Life vendors are closing up shop due to the recent explosion of a program called "Copybot", designed to clone other people's possessions. From the article: "The night before last, I was looking around a no-fire combat sandbox, where people design and test weapons and vehicles, when an argument broke out; a thing going by the name Nimrod Yaffle was cloning things out of other people's inventories, and claiming he could freely do it because he'd been playing with Copybot with employees of SL creator/operators Linden Lab. All hell broke loose, in the sort of drama you can only find on the internet. Linden Lab's first official response? If you feel your IP has been compromised by Copybot, we'll sort of help you lodge a DCMA complaint in the US. Businesses started shutting down moments later. " Update 20:43 GMT by SM Several users have mentioned that the Second Life blog has a few thoughts on this issue and quite a few comments from users already.

If his experiment with splitting photons actually works, says University of Washington physicist John Cramer, the next step will be to test for quantum "retrocausality."

That's science talk for saying he hopes to find evidence of a photon going backward in time.

"It doesn't seem like it should work, but on the other hand, I can't see what would prevent it from working," Cramer said. "If it does work, you could receive the signal 50 microseconds before you send it."

Uh, huh ... what? Wait a minute. What is that supposed to mean?

Roughly put, Cramer is talking about the subatomic equivalent of arriving at the train station before you've left home, of winning the lottery before you've bought the ticket, of graduating from high school before you've been born -- or something like that.

"It probably won't work," he said again carefully, peering through his large glasses as if to determine his audience's mental capacity for digesting the information. Cramer, an accomplished experimental physicist who also writes science fiction, knows this sounds more like a made-for-TV script on the Sci Fi Channel than serious scientific research.

"But even if it doesn't work, we should be able to learn something new about quantum mechanics by trying it," he said. What he and UW colleague Warren Nagourney plan to try soon is an experiment aimed at resolving some niggling contradictions in one of the most fundamental branches of physics known as quantum mechanics, or quantum theory.

"To be honest, I only have a faint understanding of what John's talking about," Nagourney said, smiling. Though claiming to be "just a technician" on this project, Cramer's technician partner previously assisted with the research of Hans Dehmelt, the UW scientist who won the 1989 Nobel Prize in physics.
