Besides the implied sexism, the theory is just bad history. There is no conclusive historical evidence of a matriarchal civilization having ever existed anywhere. There have been, and still are, matrilineal societies, in which inheritance and/or genealogy is traced through the female line. But this in no way implies a superiority or even an equality of the feminine gender in these societies.

Something else to consider: if these matriarchies were so great, stable and powerful, how did the marauding men manage to so easily take over?

This reminds you to compare the cost of local gyms. Then you suddenly decide to look up venues for your birthday party.

You may think you are browsing the internet in a slightly absent-minded manner. You are, in fact, "wilfing".

According to a survey for a financial website, almost seven in 10 internet users admit to the newly named habit.

The study of 2,400 people carried out by YouGov found more than a quarter of internet users wilf - a rough acronym of What Was I Looking For? - for two days every month.

Shopping is the online activity most likely to make users wilf. Men are more likely to admit to being wilfers than women. A third of the men questioned said the habit had damaged their relationship with a partner.

'Miracle' face cream costs less than £2

A face cream costing just £1.89 for a pot has emerged as the miracle remedy that really could stave off the appearance of old age.

The search for the secret of eternal youth has seen women paying £1,500 for creams that promise radical results.

But tests carried out by 2,000 ordinary women has shown the answer may lie in Aldi, the budget supermarket, where the Siana Moisturising Anti-Wrinkle Cream beat off dozens of more expensive products to be named as the best anti-ageing cream on the market.

The results has caused a run on the stores sales have shot up 800% from 1,084 to 8,037 pots.

Within a week, 37,000 had been snapped up.

Aldi is now frantically restocking its stores to ensure there is no repeat of the scenes outside Boots stores across the country last May when hundreds of women and even some men queued from 5am to buy No 7 Protect and Perfect Beauty Serum.

The case moved through the courts, and in 2004, Tennessee Circuit Judge Robert Childers delivered a devastating blow to the Hes. Childers found that Anna Mae was "in a strongly bonded, deep-seated, healthy relationship with the Baker family." He said that breaking the bond with the Bakers would cause Anna Mae substantial harm. Childers ordered that the Hes' parental rights be terminated and gave full custody to the Bakers.

Finally, on Jan. 23, 2007, just five days before Anna Mae's eighth birthday, the Tennessee Supreme Court issued a stunning decision. It determined that the lower courts had erred and that Anna Mae belonged with her biological family.

A Wiccan Chaplain and Statewide California Department of Corrections, Patrick McCollum will speak at a briefing on prisoners' religious rights at the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights in Washington, DC on Friday, February 8, 2007. This marks the first time that a Wiccan expert has spoken on religious freedom issues at a Commission briefing.

"It is an honor to be invited to participate in the dialogue and to share a Wiccan's point of view," said McCollum. "Those in minority faiths are seldom given the opportunity to be heard, even when the issue concerns their rights. I am hopeful this invitation is indicative of what we can expect going forward and that there truly is a desire on the part of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights to ensure that inmates receive equal treatment, and a willingness to better serve minority religions."

Soldiers record bedtime stories

Kent soldiers preparing for a tour of duty in Afghanistan are taking part in a new project which allows them to stay in close contact with their children.

The Canterbury-based Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders have recorded bedtime stories onto a CD for the youngsters to hear while they are away.

The Storytime Soldiers project has been jointly organised by the battalion and Canterbury Sure Start.

Twenty-six soldiers, one of them a mother, have taken part in the scheme.

The parents have each recorded four bedtime stories onto a CD, which has a cover photo of them reading the stories, and also a recorded personal message.

A religious father put safety pins through the tongues and lips of his two children and slit their mouths with scalpel blades, a court has heard.

The father, from Nigeria, told the boys he inflicted the injuries because God had his tongue cut off in the Bible, a jury at Bradford Crown Court was told.

The boys' injuries were discovered in February 2005 when a school friend of the older boy, now aged 13, noticed bruises on his body during a PE lesson, the court heard.

The boy's younger brother, now aged 11, was questioned and told the school he had been assaulted the previous night when his father swung a pole at him, causing cuts to his fingers.

"A scalpel had been used to slit their lips and inside their mouths. Their father had then sewn them up with a medical kit that he had."

Miss Wigin added that the boy said his father "spoke about God in the Bible having his tongue cut off" as an explanation for why he carried out the injuries.
